Sharing a Printer - Windows XP This document provides a guide to setting up and accessing a shared printer, over a network, using Windows XP.
These notes assume that: • You already have a printer which is connected to the “host” computer. (Print a test page to check that the printer is installed correctly.) • You have a suitable network connection between the host computer and the “client” computer(s). • Your “host” computer and your “client” computers are in the same Workgroup. (Open My Computer, click on My Network Places, and choose to View Workgroup Computers. If you can “see” the other computers in the workgroup, the network connection and associated settings are valid.)
The setup process involves two parts: • Sharing the printer on the “host” computer. • Accessing the shared computer from a “client” computer on the network.
Note: • You may have to adjust/disable your firewall software to permit remote connections by another computer to access the shared printer.
Part A: On the Host computer (to which the Printer is attached).... 1. Choose Printers and faxes from the Start menu.
2. Right-click on the printer you want to share.
3. Choose Sharing from the menu.
4. Click on the Share this printer button.
Provide a suitable name for the printer. Click on the Apply button.
5. Close the printer Properties window. Sharing a Printer in Windows XP
