What is TRUST! Magazine TRUST! Is a digital magazine dedicated to helping leaders and organizations build long-term trust. http://trustacrossamerica.com/magazine.shtml
What do we mean by trust? Trust is built through: VISION: An understanding that building trust into an organization’s DNA will lead to long-term profitability. CULTURE: Instilling the values, principles and beliefs essential to building a foundation of trust. LEADERSHIP: The implementation of trust strategies that separate great leaders from their competitors. ACTION: The key actions that characterize a commitment to building stakeholder trust. TRANSFORMATION: The newly adopted behaviors that build high trust and collaboration. By producing this magazine in digital format, we can expand our offerings beyond just articles. Each edition may include instructional videos, links to interviews, photos and many other features not found in traditional print magazines. We hope you find the presentation of our content both valuable and interesting. We always welcome your suggestions for ways to improve. Barbara Brooks Kimmel
a note from the executive editor Organizational trust is a key driver of longterm success, but often leaders mistakenly assume that to earn trust, a company need only be profitable. This anniversary issue of TRUST! Magazine salutes both those whose work helps build organizational trust, as well as organizations that lead with trust. A special geographic directory is included in the back of this issue.

Trust is widely held as the cornerstone of quality relationships both at work and at home. There exists a multi-billion dollar industry helping people, teams, and organizations create cohesion and collaboration through the promotion of trust. Many of these dollars are also being spent to promote cohesion and intimacy within couples who seek to restore or grow trust in their personal life. So how do early family dynamics influence one’s ability to trust later in life? It is a common school of thought among psychologists that trust issues develop the first day a baby experiences anxiety from the realization that the source of survival (i.e., milk) is “out there” and thus creates a specific cry for food that is readily recognized by the parent. Still, without a framework for time, 5 minutes crying for help can likely feel like 5 hours for that infant who is experiencing self in dire distress. Even without a vocabulary, these distressed babies are formulating beliefs related to how trustworthy they find their environment as well as how loveable or important they are to that “source” of survival. Two famous attachment theory researchers, Ainsworth and Bowlby, studied this separation anxiety once the babies had become toddlers and identified 4 distinct styles, for which the grown-up versions are now being studied within the context of trust-ability and leadership effectiveness. Of the four adult styles in the corporate world, only the Secure style, described as trustworthy and dependable, is statistically significantly related to transformational, charismatic leadership (e.g., Underwood, 2015). Multiple studies show the three remaining insecure styles [Preoccupied (Anxious), Fearful Avoidant, and Dismissive Avoidant] are related to ineffective leadership qualities wrought by trust issues. The practicality in all this has to do with how most people are motivated by insights related to “what makes me and others tick,” thereby making positive changes accordingly. Through a comprehensive 360° feedback process that includes both work and personal relationships along with data representing one’s perceptions of early family relationship dynamics, I’ve witnessed workshop participants connect family-of-origin dynamics to how they treat others at work. For example, it’s not unusual for someone to say, “Oh, no, I’ve become my father!” Or mother. More importantly, when they connect these etiological insights to their constructive feedback, they show greater commitment to and success with making the desired change. Invariably I have witnessed these same people who take ownership of their own role in ineffective leadership, become more trusting of others. This phenomenon has been such a consistent finding over the years that I felt compelled to write this initial article as a prelude to an upcoming book on the “anatomy of trust,” with special focus on the influence of early family dynamics on later life trust-ability and leadership effectiveness.

License our FACTS® Framework & Ratings A Quantitative, Unbiased and Holistic Approach to Analyzing Public Companies Developed in 2008, FACTS® unique methodology ranks and rates public companies on five quantitative indicators of trustworthy business behavior. Companies that adopt trust as an intentional business strategy reap the following benefits:
•
Faster decision-making
•
Higher levels of innovation
•
Greater employee retention/less turnover
•
Cost savings from improved operational efficiencies
The FACTS® Framework and Ratings are Used By: Companies and Boards of Directors: The FACTS® Framework provides the C-Suite and its Board with a unique trust profile to aid in capitalizing on strengths, identifying risks and drawing peer comparisons. Investor Relations: The FACTS® Framework provides both internal and external investor relations and corporate communications executives with a unique trust profile to aid in capitalizing on strengths, identifying risks, drawing peer comparisons and communicating with stakeholders.
FACTS® Ratings Universe & Methodology: FACTS rates and ranks almost 2000 of the largest US public companies on the five indicators of trust “worthiness” shown above: Financial stability, Accounting Conservativeness, Corporate governance, Transparency and Sustainability. Quantitative data is acquired from independent third party data providers and combined into one rating, equally weighting the model’s five indicators. Companies do not participate in this rating process, nor do they know they are being evaluated. This precludes any survey bias. By combining the five indicators into an aggregate “trust” score, a ranking and rating can be assigned to each company, on a one-year, three-year or five-year basis. Ratings range from 0-100.
Consultants: Consultants from leadership, communications, risk, forensic accounting, reputation, governance, human resources, sustainability, ESG or trust, use our FACTS® Ratings to provide market intelligence for current assignments and prospecting new business. Our FACTS Framework can also be used as a tool to assist clients in structuring a trust elevating program. Industry Associations & Trade Groups: The FACTS® Framework provides market intelligence on industries and their individual member companies. Individual Investors: Trust Across America and its parent company, Next Decade, Inc. do not manage money. Individuals have access to the FACTS model through investment firms that license the model. Investment Managers & Advisors: Investment managers license FACTS data for use in developing investment products and portfolios. Media: The media uses FACTS® ratings to help foster organizational trust by reporting on positive and compelling stories that a growing consumer audience wants to hear, and by focusing on emerging topics receiving increased main stream media attention.

Let’s Redouble Our Trust Building Work Pollsters tell us we don’t trust our politicians, CEOs, banks, Wall Street, and mega-‐‑firms from Big Oil to Big Pharma. Sometimes, we don’t trust our business partners, or our “life-‐‑ partners.” Lack of trust is a huge problem. Why? Because leadership, business, and life are all about relationships. And the best relationships are built on trust. When trust is lacking, relationships founder.
My leadership work with organizations dives deeply into shared values, inspirational purpose, ethics, sustainability, and culture. All those facets of leadership are important. But the issue that seems to resonate most with people is trust.
People “get” trust. They know what trust means because they experience it, positively or negatively, every day with their family, colleagues, or in the marketplace. Too often, people struggle with organizational values that are jokes on the company website, or defining a noble purpose for their organization. They don’t know how to deal with ethical dilemmas, or how to form a healthy culture. We need to shift some of our focus from esoteric concepts like ethics and culture to trust. That’s why I value my association with Trust Across America – Trust Around the World. I have met outstanding people like Stephen M. R. Covey, Charlie Green, Barbara Kimmel, Jim Kouzes, Bob Whipple (The Trust Ambassador), and more. Trust matters. Let’s redouble our trust-‐‑building work together.
