Overview: On the 14 of October 2015 a topographical Survey of the environs of the Granary, Charlotte Quay, in Limerick was conducted. The purpose of this survey was to get the shape of the ground and the levels at different locations.

Site Description and Equipment: The site is located at Charlotte Quay, Limerick. From the north it’s joined by Abbey River, from the south with Limerick city library, from the east with the Dublin Road & Charlotte Quay apartments and from the west the Hunt Museum is located. The site was surveyed using Leica Total Stations and Trimble total Stations.

Implementation Stage: An unknown control point was established by assuming a local gird system where Station 1 has coordinates (1000, 1000, 100) and by using a compass the North side of the site was located. Then we shoot from the first location to the Station 2 (foresight) and record the E2, N2, H2 Then, move to the new location, set up, tell the total station you are at E2, N2, H2, then shoot (back sight) to the reflector set up at the Station 1 and record the position. Station 2 was set up over a known point which was back sight to the Station 1 with 1000, 1000,100. We then began to recording features for our survey. Features like, Kerb lines, Walls, Manholes, Steps, Road gullies (not on road), Traffic Lights, Junction Boxes, Lamp Post, Trees, Building outlines and Spot Levels are surveyed.

Results: The results of the coordinates are then transferred from the Leica and Trimble total stations to the computer and plotted in AutoCAD in order to get the map of the site and its features that were surveyed. After plotting the coordinates from Leica and Trimble total station in AutoCAD we see in some locations lines and coordinates are off and not overlapping properly. For example the edge of the building from Leica total station is off by 1.3m from the Trimble total station.

Possible source of Errors: There are many ways and sources that could cause error during the surveying. Some of them are listed below.  When setting up the total station, the tripod may not be calibrated well. Or moved after calibration, that cause errors in the survey data.  The person who is holding the prisms may not hold it straight, moving from one side to another side could give a wrong reading and cause errors.  The ground was concrete and the tripod was not tight enough in position, disposition of the tripod by slightly moving it could cause the errors in the data.  Errors during recording of the coordinates, missing points or record point with different label or ID would cause confusion and lead to error in the data.  The site location include roads that has fair amount of cars trafficking which cause vibration of the ground, that lead to off calibration and wrong data from total stations.  As the survey was conducted during a rainy day there may be some possible errors that could occur during surveying.  Possibility error may have been in the prism not being calibrated.

Possible Solutions: The only solution to fix the errors is to redo the survey again, while paying attentions to all errors the may occur again while surveying, to ensure accurate results. There may be human error occur into the results, so greater care and patience are required while setting up the Total Station and recording the coordinates.
