ABOUT US

The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres Founded in 1959 by Swami Vishnudevananda, we are a non-profit organization whose purpose is to share the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta as a means of achieving physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing and attaining self-realization. The Centre in Toronto was established in 1962 and is part of The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres.

One of the great sages of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind our organization. His aim in life was the dissemination of spiritual knowledge. His

Swami Sivananda (1887-1963) Founder of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, Swami Vishnudevananda a world authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga. Swamiji was also known as the "Flying Swami" for the Swami Vishnudevananda different peace missions he pursued around (1927-1993) the world. His motto was:

KARMA YOGA

We are all volunteers: Teachers, staff and helpers. All of our teachers have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Course, recognized by the Yoga Alliance, and have a minimum certification of RYT-200. All teachers, helpers and full-time staff members in the organization are working on a volunteer basis. Karma Yoga (selfless service) is acknowledged as a means to inner purification, elimination of the ego and spiritual growth. All talents are welcome. If you have some time and energy to spare, please let us know. By becoming a member you actively support the Centre.

If you are a complete beginner, or would like to learn more about the roots of Yoga, come for a free trial class where you will get a clear introduction to the practices and the tradition of yoga, and learn more about our Centre and teachers. Yoga 2M - with Meditation A four-week course meeting twice a week

90 min class Understand the relationship between the practice of yoga exercises and meditation. Each session follows the traditional Hatha Yoga system of postures (Asanas), breathing (Pranayama), concentration techniques (Dharana) and meditation (Dhyana). The course covers the theory and practice of meditation and is a good transition from Yoga 2 to other intermediate courses. Bharata Natyam Workshop – Classical Indian Dance with Uma Vasudevan

Bharata Natyam is the most ancient and popular dance style of South India. A distinctive feature is the use of expressive hand gestures (mudras) as a way of Mantras: Vibrations Which Uplift communication. The two aspects of the dance are Nritta Mantras consist of Sanskrit syllables which when or pure dance and Abhinaya or expression. Learning spoken out loud or repeated mentally, create Bharata Natyam builds endurance, increase stamina, vibration, invoking a specific energy. SPECIAL COURSES Sacraed Vibrations of Sanskrit: Sanskrit for Beginners (Level 1) with Ram Vakkalanka Sanskrit is described as divine language, with healing and energizing sounds. It is the most ancient and structured language of the world. Sanskrit is yoga in linguistic form, with pranayama and mantras built into it. In this course you will get to know the language, basic spoken Sanskrit, some mantras, names of yoga asanas and the Sanskrit alphabet. 4 Paths of Yoga Course Do you feel confused by all the different varieties and ‘styles’ of yoga found today? Mindful Yoga with Saraswati

Raja Yoga with Saraswati

Raja Yoga Sutras describe profound methods for exploring the mind which can be applied to improve your meditation practice. The Sutras however are often misunderstood, and guidance of a teacher is necessary in order to understand and apply the wisdom contained in each of the verses. In this course, we will explore the most important teachings of the Sutras, including: components of the mind; five states in which mind manifests; five categories of thoughts (including sleep!); 8 limbs of yoga practice (astanga); other practices and meditations designed to achieve a one-pointed mind. YOGA FOR KIDS

Our yoga classes are comprised of traditional yoga poses, breathing and concentration exercises, taught in an engaging manner and concluded by guided relaxation. Children learn how to energize themselves by stretching into various postures, and how to calm themselves by controlling the breath. The last part of the class is reserved for yoga games, music or art (dramatic and visual) with a focus on teaching cooperation and self-expression and developing friendship. At the end of the session, parents and friends are invited to the class, enabling children to show what they've learned. *Parents are welcome to take a concurrent Open Class (10:30-12:00pm)

TEACHERS' TRAINING COURSE

The TTC is a unique, profoundly transforming and personal experience that is based on the ancient gurukula teaching system, which integrates the student's daily life into yoga training. PRIVATE & CORPORATECLASSES Due to increased demand from students who are not able to attend regular scheduled classes or who require personal attention, the centre offers private classes. Prahlada and Saraswati (Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre Directors) offer individualized classes at the centre. $100 per class for 60 minutes. FREE GROUP MEDITATION

Satsang means “association of the wise”. Meditating together in a group creates a strong spiritual atmosphere which allows for a deeper experience of meditation. Satsang is the heart of yoga practice. It consists of 30 minutes of silent meditation, 30 minutes of meditative chanting of mantras and kirtan followed by a lecture on yoga philosophy or psychology. Free of charge and open to all. Donations of flowers or sweets are welcome. PUJA: Bhakti Yoga

Puja is an uplifting traditional ceremony, a form of worship. While mantras are chanted, ablutions are performed to the various deities with milk, water and other items, followed by decoration of the deities and Arati. Free of charge and open to all.
