Market Spotlight: Pharmaceuticals

Solutions for Catalyst and Activated Carbon Removal in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Manufacturing

Intense competition. Off-brand pirating. Offshore manufacturers pushing substandard product. Ingredient shortages. Tighter regulations. The stakes have never been higher in the pharmaceuticals market. Meeting these challenges puts added strain on manufacturers to work with tighter budgets and shorter market deadlines.

How does a manufacturer stay ahead of the game and still maintain a quality product reputation? Eaton has answers. We offer a selection of filtration products that deliver consistent, reliable API containment and recovery, while creating opportunities for cost reduction as well.

Maintaining Process QC and Ingredient Control Eaton combines sales, engineering, manufacturing, customer service, and technical sales support into one focused business objective: Provide customers with optimum filtration solutions.

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are defined by the US Food and Drug Administration as substances used singly or in a mixture to produce a medicinal product. When used in drug production, these substances become the API for that product. Catalysts, bonded to activated carbon as a base material, are used to expedite a reaction process, such as hydrogenation. The increased use of metal catalysts such as palladium, rhodium, and ruthenium requires containment and recovery to meet catalyst residue limits set by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). On a secondary but equally important level catalysts are expensive, making their recovery and reuse a budget consideration as well. Activated carbon is also employed in API manufacturing to remove color, contaminants, and impurities from product via chemical adsorption. If the carbon is used in free-powder form, the residue has to be removed. Both methods require filter solutions able to handle high volumes of solids.

Engineering the Better Idea Many filtration options for catalyst and activated carbon removal are adequate. They may, however, not be optimal for your application. Among the challenges are designs that feature economy but increase the risk of filtration bypass. Some are complicated and increase staff workload to maintain. The choice of filter media can also be a concern. Eaton resolves these issues with a family of solutions under the BECO® trademark. BECO depth filter sheets are specially manufactured to ensure high particulate holding capacity and safe, consistent retention. Very pure, finely fibrillated cellulose fibers in combination with filtrationactive mineral components, such as diatomaceous earth, form the matrix of the filter media. BECO depth filter sheets are typically used in enclosed and classic plate and frame filters.

The new, pure BECOPAD® and the high-purity, pharma-grade BECOPAD P are the first and only mineral-free depth filter media produced to date with special, high-purity cellulose. In the BECOPAD range, highpurity celluloses form a unique, superfine filtration structure that does not require inorganic ingredients, lessening the burden of material recovery. BECO filter sheets and BECOPAD depth filters are also used to produce BECODISC® stacked disc cartridges where they contribute to superior mechanical and chemical stability. BECODISC stacked disc cartridges enable simple insertion and removal in BECO INTEGRA® DISC stacked disc cartridge housings.
