The Contemporary portion of the sale will be led by Roy Lichtenstein’s 3-dimensional multiple Brushstroke IV (est. $200/300,000), as well as premier examples of Andy Warhol’s printmaking, spanning his entire career and including the full portfolios of Mao and Marilyn (est. $1.5/2 million, above). With estimates ranging from under $1,000 to $2 million, Sotheby’s November auction offers a unique opportunity for both emerging collectors and established connoisseurs to build their collection. A portion of the pre-sale exhibition this season will be curated by designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of the fashion label Public School; the exhibition will be on view to the public at our York Avenue galleries beginning on 19 November. More information can be found at the sale page.
Mary Bartow, Head of Sotheby’s Prints Department, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Public School on our exhibition this season. The CFDA has recognized emerging designers Dao-Yi Chow & Maxwell Osborne for their remarkable innovation and creativity in the fashion world, and we are excited to see their unique vision through the lens of our Prints exhibition. Public School is celebrated for their ability to mix high and low references from fashion and art, and this dialogue with our auction will bring a unique perspective to the wide variety of works in the sale.”
A highlight of the auction is Edvard Munch’s extensively hand-colored image of Madonna from 1895, which is exemplary of the artist’s ability to heighten the impact of a lithograph by layering watercolor and ink, adding opaque and translucent blue, black and red to the already dynamic composition (est. $1/1.5 million, left). The iconic image depicts the dichotomy of ecstasy and death; the surrounding sperm border — which does not always accompany prints of this work — signifies the creation of life, while the fetus figure at the paper’s lower left represents an untimely demise. Its offering this November represents an extremely rare opportunity to acquire such an extensively hand-colored impression of Munch’s Madonna, one of the artist’s most important images.

Designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow, born and raised in New York City, breathe the inspiration and restless energy from the city they live and work in. Founded in 2008, Public School, is redefining the landscape for men’s and women’s tailored sportswear. Chow and Osborne look to find perfection in imperfection, deconstructing classic silhouettes through a modern lens by mixing high and low references from fashion, music and art into their work. Their signature silhouettes, play on proportion and use of active inspired fabrications, are designed for the culturally convergent man and woman. In 2010, Public School was selected as one of the brands to participate in the inaugural class of the CFDA {Fashion Incubator} program. The brand won the 2013 CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear, the 2014 CFDA VOGUE FASHION FUND, the 2014 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year Award and, most recently, the designers took home the International Woolmark Prize.
