Alumni Searching Gets Easier In LinkedIn

Many times, a Hiring Manager will request interns, entry-level, and professional level candidates from a school that produces great candidates for the skills they need, or maybe just a school in their geographic region. With LinkedIn’s new feature to find alumni, recruiting just got a little more convenient.

There are 2 ways to get to this tool: 1. From the dropdown menu at http://www.linkedin.com, choose “Network”, then click on “Find Alumni” (for those that have the new version of LinkedIn) 2. Open a browser and go to http://www.linkedin.com/college (for any version of LinkedIn) Here is the main screen:

Many times, a job requisition will call for someone with “X” years of experience. Recruiters can select the “Attended” date range and input a correlated date range that would most likely yield someone with “X” years of experience. The categories displayed are the following:

By default, LinkedIn will display the user’s most recent college as well as filling in the dates this user attended that specific school. From here, recruiters can explore many options, including clicking on the “Change School” option in the upper right hand corner. In the dropdown, LinkedIn will show the “signed-in” users schools, similar schools, and the ability to browse any school by typing the name in a search box.

Where they live - Great for narrowing down targeted candidates by geographic region (especially if relocation is not approved for the requisition). Note: just because they attended a school in a particular location, doesn’t necessarily mean they are still in that location.

Alumni Searching Gets Easier In LinkedIn...continued Where they work - Excellent way to target specific companies (competitors, companies that have certain skill sets, or geographically located near this jobs location). What they do - List of titles and/or functions that are represented. What they studied - Utilize this section to find talent with certain degrees. What they’re skilled at - Narrow the search to only those candidates with certain skills on their LinkedIn profile. How you are connected - Can narrow results to 1st degree, 2nd degree, group members, and 3rd + everyone else. LinkedIn only shows the first three. To see the other three categories, click on the arrow/chevron ( > ) that is to the right of “What they do”. By default, LinkedIn will show results by the “most common”. To see and/or select data other than what is shown, click on “See more”, scroll down to the bottom, and type in the keyword. However, only 4 of the 6 fields offer keyword search. By clicking on the blue bars, that selection is “locked in” and thus the recruiter can “lock in” someone that attended Purdue University, lives in Indianapolis, IN, works at Eli Lilly in Engineering, majored in Engineering, skilled at Process Engineering, and is not a 1st or 2nd degree connection. The graduation year is highlighted in a watermark. Just click on their name to see their LinkedIn profile. To run a different search, click on “Clear Filters” to reset the data and begin a new search. LinkedIn, a long-time favorite with recruiters/sourcers, continues to offer new tools and techniques to assist in finding top talent. This alumni tool will decrease the time and effort to find profiles of candidates from colleges and universities that meet certain criteria.

For nearly two years, Indeed® has provided recruiters the ability to access the resumes of individuals that have chosen to upload them to the Indeed site. This is a great option and one that is often helpful to recruiters and sourcers given the breadth of talent posting resumes on Indeed. An additional and alternative method to viewing these resumes is through the use of the XRay command to view the Indeed site. An XRay can be very beneficial to a resume search as the use of a search engine allows the use of additional Boolean commands than those available for searching inside the Indeed site. For an example, the Wildcard modifier will work in Google®, Teoma, or Yandex®, but not in the Indeed search box

Using a search engine, historically recruiters have been able to use an XRay of Indeed’s domain and search on either the terms “me” OR “r” in the URL address to locate relevant candidate information. Recently, Indeed has provided recruiters with the option to search on the term “rz” in the URL address when XRaying Indeed for candidates.

A New Technique to XRay Indeed®

Resumes of candidates on Indeed still have the “me” or “r” within its domain; however these candidates have been indexed differently from Google. Many of the candidates have not been retrieved with the traditional “me” or “r” in their domain, but have been indexed with the “rz.” This new search will help open the door to new candidates and help increase a sourcer’s talent pool.
