The Stingrays are also one of the best defensive teams in the league, allowing just 2.52 goals per game and 27.90 shots on goal per game which are both second-best in the ECHL. The Gladiators have been a good team when not playing Florida this season, going 0-7 vs. the Everblades and 14-9-1-1 against all other opponents. Gladiators Hold Off Stingrays, 4-2 The Atlanta Gladiators scored all four of their goals during the second period, getting the offense the needed to defeat the South Carolina Stingrays by a final score of 4-2 on Friday night in the first of a weekend home-and-home series between the two teams at the Infinite Energy Center. South Carolina got help from forwards Steven Whitney and Tim McGauley, who each scored a goal and an assist for the Rays in the loss. This season there are 12 games between the two teams on the ECHL schedule. The Stingrays have gone 4-2-2 in the first seven with one more coming Saturday before the calendar flips to 2018. McGauley Finding Success Forward Tim McGauley had two big games on the road against Greenville last week. He first posted two assists on goals by Kelly Zajac in a 3-1 victory last Thursday. Next, the Wilcox, Sask. native scored twice for his second career 2-goal game before adding a tally in the shootout during SC’s 3-2 win last Saturday. He has now matched his point total from last season in 25 games this year with 17 points on five goals and 12 assists. SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Cherniwchan Earns AHL Call-Up With Utica The Stingrays announced Friday that forward Andrew Cherniwchan has signed a professional tryout agreement with the AHL’s Utica Comets. Cherniwchan, 28, is in his sixth professional season and is no stranger to the AHL, having played 134 career games with the Providence Bruins and Springfield Falcons during parts of three seasons from 2013-16. The Hinton, Alta native has a total of 36 points with the two squads on 17 goals and 19 assists. So far this year Cherniwchan has been the leading goal scorer for South Carolina, striking 10 times to go along with nine assists for 19 points in 25 contests. The Rays have been the forward’s only ECHL team during his pro career, accounting for 103 points (47 goals, 56 assists) during 144 total games with the club. Leaders Against Atlanta Patrick Gaul leads South Carolina against Atlanta this season with eight points in the eight matchups on three goals and five assists. Steven Whitney has six points on three goals and three assists in six games. Joe Devin has put up two goals and three assists and Kelly Zajac has also posted five helpers in the eight meetings. Playing It Close The Stingrays have done well in close games this season, posting a record of 10-4-3-1 in 1-goal contests. SC has found a way to secure points in 14 of those 18 close games, helping themselves stay near the top of the South Division standings. Stingrays Persevere With Dramatic Shootout Win The South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in dramatic fashion Saturday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, winning a shootout in the third round and picking up two points with a 3-2 victory. Initially the Rays had been declared a winner after goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped Branden Troock in the top of the third round during the skills competition. But after further discussion, the call was changed to a goal and South Carolina, who had left the ice, had to come back out to complete the game. Defenseman Frankie Simonelli was the next shooter for the Stingrays and left no doubts, beating Greenville goaltender Ty Rimmer with a wrist shot to seal the win. Forward Tim McGauley had both regulation goals for South Carolina and also scored in the shootout, while Jakaitis stopped 30 shots to earn his 10th win of the season. Glads Use Fast Start To Hold Off Rays Phil Lane scored twice and Brady Vail added three assists for the Atlanta Gladiators, who held off a third period comeback attempt by the South Carolina Stingrays for a 4-3 decision at the North Charleston Coliseum last Friday night. Steven Whitney had a goal and an assist for South Carolina while Patrick Gaul picked up two helpers in a losing effort. Goaltender Parker Milner got the start and made a total of 18 saves for the Stingrays. In a late desperation effort, South Carolina cut Atlanta’s lead down to a one-goal game with 18 seconds to go on a deflection in front by forward Andrew Cherniwchan. Rays’ captain Joe Devin took a shot from the left point with traffic in front and the team’s leading goal scorer got his 10th of the year on the re-direct.
