South Carolina Kicks Off 4-Game Week In Jacksonville Wednesday The South Carolina Stingrays begin a new week that consists of four games on Wednesday night in Jacksonville, taking on the Icemen for the fifth time during the 2017-18 season. In their last matchup on Sunday, Jan. 14, the Stingrays defeated the Icemen 3-1 in front of their home crowd at the North Charleston Coliseum. After the mid-week meeting in the Sunshine State, the Stingrays return home for a 3-on-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum over the weekend against Orlando and Norfolk. South Carolina is in second place in the South Division with 53 points, while Jacksonville is in seventh place with 29 points through the first 40 games of their inaugural season. South Carolina boasts the top defense and penalty killing unit in the ECHL, allowing just 2.47 goals per game while discarding 90.3% of opponents’ power play opportunities this season. Conversely, the Icemen have struggled on both sides of the puck, scoring 2.95 goals per game while allowing 3.73 tallies per contest. Jacksonville is also ranked 17th on the penalty kill with a rate of 81.5%. Admirals Top Stingrays 3-2 In Overtime An overtime goal by Grant Besse gave the Norfolk Admirals a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope. Forwards Kelly Zajac and Hampus Gustafsson had the goals for the Stingrays in a losing effort. After South Carolina had the early edge in shots on goal 15-8 after the first period, the Admirals controlled the chances for the remainder of the game and had a 32-30 shots advantage overall on the night. Besse scored the game-winner for Norfolk at 4:37 of the extra session, securing an extra point for the Admirals by beating Adam Carlson on a shot that snuck in with just 22 seconds remaining.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Icemen Jacksonville recently returned from a road trip up north against Worcester and Manchester. The Icemen fared well in their first two contests, a 5-3 win over Worcester and a 4-2 defeat of Manchester. But the final game of the trip ended badly with a 10-4 loss to the Monarchs. The Icemen have struggled to gain consistency this season and currently have an overall record of 12-23-3-2 in their inaugural year. The team’s leading scorer, Elgin Pearce, has racked up 29 points on 13 goals and 16 assists in 37 games. Rookie forward Cameron Critchlow has recently flourished, posting 22 points through 38 games on nine goals and 13 assists. Defensemen Scott Savage and Christopher Dienes have become part of the team’s offense with 20 and 18 points respectively. Savage, in his rookie season out of Boston College, has six goals and 14 assists, while Dienes, who is also in his rookie season out of Western Michigan and participated in the ECHL All-Star Classic, has four goals and 14 assists. Goaltender Jamie Phillips has played in 16 games for the Icemen this year but was recently called up to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. Colton Phinney and Austin Lotz have each filled in during his absence. Lotz currently holds the better numbers with a goals-against of 3.34 and a save percentage at 0.887. All-Time History vs. Jacksonville Wednesday’s meeting is the fifth between South Carolina and Jacksonville during the Icemen’s first season. The Rays were victorious in the first bout in Jacksonville on Oct. 21 by a score of 3-2 and then defeated the Icemen 3-1 on Nov. 5 in North Charleston before a 5-2 road loss in a morning school day game on Nov. 14. Recently SC got their third win in four tries with a 3-1 victory over Jacksonville on Jan. 14. The Stingrays were familiar with Jacksonville’s first ECHL franchise, the Lizard Kings, during their existance from 1995-2000. The two teams will face-off 10 total times during the Icemen’s inaugural year in Jacksonville. Gus Gets Going Forward Hampus Gustafsson scored his first professional goal Friday night in the Stingrays’ win over Norfolk. It didn’t take long for him to get his second tally, as he was also able to score during the second period of Saturday night’s game. Gustafsson is in his rookie season and now has three total points for South Carolina through his first 11 ECHL games. Overtime Winner Gives Bindulis 1st Career GWG Defenseman Kris Bindulis’ third career goal came in overtime on Friday night, giving South Carolina a 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals. The tally also served as his first-career game-winning marker. The Stingrays have seen their fair share of overtimes already this season, with 11 of their contests going past regulation. South Carolina has a record of 5-4 in games decided during 3-on-3 play, as well as a 1-1 mark during shootouts in 2017-18. Top Dogs On Defense The Stingrays have allowed an average of 2.47 goals per game this season, which gives them the top defensive unit in the ECHL through their first 38 games.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Leaders Against Jacksonville Forward Steven Whitney and defenseman Joey Leach have led the Rays in scoring during the team’s four previous games against Jacksonville this season with four points apiece. Whitney has posted two goals and two assists, while Leach has one goal and three helpers. Forward Joe Devin has also been a factor, scoring two goals and an assist against the South Division’s newest member. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis is 1-1 in two starts against Jacksonville, while the Parker Milner won his only start of the season when opposing the Icemen with a 16-save effort last Sunday in which he allowed just one goal. Milner Making It Look Easy After securing a win in Friday’s game, goaltender Parker Milner leads the Stingrays with 12 victories this season. The netminder was less than a minute away from recording his first shutout of the season, but a last-minute comeback by the Admirals spoiled that chance. Still, Milner’s goals-against average dropped to 2.43 in the win, which is seventh-best in the ECHL. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native has won in each of his last three appearances during the last two weeks. Shooting To Win The Stingrays have a 15-4-1 record when outshooting their opponent this season. SC has some of the most impressive defensive numbers in the league, allowing just 27.66 shots on goal per game, which is second-best in the ECHL. In total, the Rays have allowed less shots on goal than every other team this season. Bindulis Pushes Stingrays Past Norfolk In OT Kris Bindulis helped the Stingrays overcome a last-minute push from the Norfolk Admirals, scoring at 1:45 of overtime to secure a 3-2 victory on Friday night at the Norfolk Scope. Hampus Gustafsson scored his first professional goal and Tim McGauley added his seventh tally of the season in the win, while Steven Whitney posted two assists and Parker Milner stopped 35 shots. Milner was perfect for almost all of regulation, holding Norfolk off the scoreboard until there were just 19 seconds remaining on the clock. The netminder picked up his 12th victory of the season and came within seconds of recording his first shutout. Stingrays Skate By Icemen, 3-1 Second period goals by defensemen Joey Leach and Paul Geiger helped the South Carolina Stingrays defeat the visiting Jacksonville Icemen by a score of 3-1 last Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum. Leach finished with a goal and an assist, while forward Steven Whitney scored an empty net goal to seal the victory for South Carolina in the third period and added an assist on Leach’s tally in the win. Goaltender Parker Milner made the start and stopped 16 shots to record his 11th win of the season. South Carolina won the special teams battle, going 1-for-5 on the power play while holding Jacksonville scoreless on the man-advantage in four chances. The Stingrays also outshot Jacksonville 30-17 in the game.
