Stingrays Look For Sweep On Saturday Afternoon The South Carolina Stingrays take on the Norfolk Admirals for the third time during the 2017-18 season Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in their fourth of seven straight home games. The contest will also begin a four-game home week with matchups against four different opponents. The Stingrays visited Norfolk during the final weekend of October and returned to the Lowcountry with a sweep, winning games by 5-4 and 5-2 scores. South Carolina is in second place in the South Division with 44 points, while the Admirals are on the outside looking in at the playoff picture through 33 games, sitting in sixth place with a total of 29 points. The teams’ offenses are closely matched, each scoring just over three goals per game. While the Stingrays have the top penalty killing percentage in the league at 90.4%, Norfolk has also killed 85% of their short-handed situations, which is eighth best in the ECHL. Tuesday’s matchup is the third of eight this season between the two franchises and the first of five meetings in January. Early Start Pushes Florida Past Stingrays The Florida Everblades scored four times in the first period to take control of Saturday afternoon’s game and defeated the South Carolina Stingrays by a final score of 5-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum. Forwards Steven Whitney and Kelly Zajac each had two points in the contest for the Stingrays, while goaltender Adam Carlson played well in a 54-minute relief effort with 27 saves. The Everblades finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play, while South Carolina was 0-for-4 on the man-advantage. Callum Booth picked up the win for Florida, stopping 20 shots. Florida outshot South Carolina 33-23 in the game, earning a weekend split.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Admirals Norfolk has rebounded as of late after a slow start to the season and has gone 6-1-1-1 in their last nine games dating back to Dec. 15. The team is led by captain Brodie Dupont, who has 36 points in 33 games on 11 goals and 25 assists in this his 11th professional season. Rookie forward Grant Besse, who was recently named to the ECHL All-Star Classic, has put together a solid first season with 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists. His 13 goals lead the team. Forward Darik Angeli has also made an impact after being signed in November, scoring 21 points in 23 games with Norfolk on nine goals and 12 assists. TJ Melancon has led the team’s offense from the blue line with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists in 26 games. Former Stingray d-man Michael Young has also gotten involved offensively since being traded to the Admirals from Rapid City with 14 points in 25 games. Goaltender Ty Reichenbach has taken the lead between the pipes, going 9-8-1 in 19 appearances with a 3.18 goals against average and a 0.917 save percentage. Jamie Murray has also played in 12 games, posting a record of 3-5-1-1. All-Time History vs. Norfolk South Carolina has an all-time record of 19-14-0-3 against the Admirals and went 2-3-0-1 against Norfolk in six meetings during the 2016-17 season. Tuesday’s meeting is the third of eight contests between the two teams this year. The Stingrays winning percentage against the Admirals last season was their worst against any South Division opponent, but SC won their first two of the year in Norfolk on Oct. 27 and 28. Whitney On A Roll Forward Steven Whitney has been the hottest offensive player for South Carolina as of late and has scored goals in four straight games. The Reading, Mass. native also has been on the scoresheet in six straight contests amounting to 10 points on five goals and five assists. Now in his fifth professional season, Whitney is fourth on the team in scoring this year with 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) in 23 games. Zajac Dishing Out Helpers Forward Kelly Zajac has racked up five assists in the team’s last three games and now leads the squad with 17 helpers on the season. The Winnipeg, Man. native picked up two more assists in the Stingrays’ loss to Florida on Saturday along with a +3 rating. The point totals are nothing new from Zajac, who led South Carolina with 39 assists and was second on the team with 52 points a year ago before contributing 11 assists and 17 points in 22 postseason contests last spring. Short-Handed Specialists South Carolina has scored short-handed four times this season while on the road, which is tied for first in the ECHL. In addition, the Rays are the only team in the league who have not allowed a shorthanded goal this season. SC leads the ECHL with a penalty killing percentage of 90.4% through 32 games with just 13 power play goals allowed in 135 shorthanded situations.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Gustafsson Reassigned To South Carolina The Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL) announced Monday that forward Hampus Gustafsson has been reassigned to the South Carolina Stingrays. The 24-year-old attacker has played in 14 games with the Stingrays’ AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears this year during his rookie season, assisting on two goals. Gustafsson, a native of Ljungby, Sweden, played in five games with South Carolina during December before being recalled to Hershey on Dec. 23. He also played in 10 games with Hershey at the end of the 2016-17 season after signing with Washington and had two assists as well as a +4 rating upon finishing a 4-year career at Merrimack College. Gaul Does It All Alternate captain Patrick Gaul, the longest tenured member of the Stingrays, is third on the team in scoring with 22 points through 32 games this year. He has also made a huge impact when the team has been short-handed, leading the squad to the top penalty killing percentage in the league. Gaul’s three shorthanded assists are tied for the ECHL league lead this season. Playing It Close The Stingrays have done well in close games this season, posting a record of 10-4-3-1 in 1-goal contests. SC has found a way to secure points in 14 of those 18 close games, helping themselves stay near the top of the South Division standings. Balance Is Key The Stingrays have had a balanced attack on the offensive end this year with 12 players who have scored in double-digits. Four forwards have recently reached the double-digit mark in goal scoring, with Steven Whitney, Joe Devin, Patrick Gaul and Andrew Cherniwchan all notching at least 10 tallies. Defensively, Frankie Simonelli, Joey Leach and Paul Geiger all have more than 10 points. Rays Cut Down Everblades, 5-2 The South Carolina Stingrays scored three times in the first period and never looked back, taking down the South Division leading Florida Everblades 5-2 on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Three forwards had multi-point nights for the Rays, including Steven Whitney who tallied a goal and two assists along with Dylan Margonari and Joe Devin, who each had a goal and an assist. Goaltender Parker Milner made the start and stopped 23 shots to earn the victory. South Carolina also won the special teams battle, going 2-for-6 on the power play as well as holding Florida to 0-for-5 on their man-advantage. Power Play Helps Stingrays Close 2017 In The Win Column The South Carolina Stingrays controlled the game from the start in a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Gladiators Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,597 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum. Special teams played a major role in the victory, as South Carolina scored twice on the power play (2-for-5) and held Atlanta off the scoresheet during their man-advantage (0-for-5). Kelly Zajac had two assists for the Rays in the win, while goaltender Parker Milner got the start and picked up his eighth win of the season with 22 saves. All four goals in the game were scored in the second period.
