Stingrays Open 25th Anniversary Season vs. Greenville Friday Night The South Carolina Stingrays open their 25th season in the Lowcountry on Friday night against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. South Carolina ended the 2016-17 season of their in-state rival in the opening round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs back in April in six games, coming back from two games down to win four straight and advance to the South Division Finals. The Rays eventually extended their run all the way to the Kelly Cup Finals, but were downed by the Colorado Eagles in the league’s championship series. Greenville began its 2017-18 year last weekend with two home battles against Wheeling and secured just one point from the matchups, losing 5-4 on Friday before a 7-6 overtime defeat on Saturday. South Carolina opens the season against Greenville at home for the second consecutive campaign. The Rays will head to Jacksonville on Saturday night for their first ever matchup against the newest South Division member. New Season, Old Faces Despite a large amount of roster turnover in the ECHL, South Carolina has a similar look for 2017-18 with a total of 11 returning members to the group. All three captains are back with forward Joe Devin leading the squad for the second consecutive year along with assistants Patrick Gaul and Trevor Gillies. Defenseman Marcus Perrier has signed on for a fourth season in South Carolina, while other returning blueliners include Joey Leach and Danny Federico. Andrew Cherniwchan, Dylan Margonari, Kelly Zajac, Tim McGauley and Patrick Megannety round out the returning forwards. In addition, goaltender Jeff Jakaitis is back in the fold after a two-year stint overseas in Norway and defenseman Frankie Simonelli has returned after being part of a Kelly Cup Finals run in 2015.

Former Stingray Caleb Herbert also made a big impact in his first weekend with the team, posting a goal and three assists. Forward Branden Troock had two tallies, while returning scorer Allan McPherson picked up a goal and two assists. However, the Swamp Rabbits struggled defensively, allowing a total of 12 goals and an average of 48 shots on goal per game.
