SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Leaders In Atlanta Forward Rob Flick has led the way offensively for South Carolina against the Gladiators this season with five points (one goal, four assists) in the three previous matchups. Four of his five points came in the 5-4 victory back on Dec. 27. Rookie forward Steven McParland has also had success when facing Atlanta, recording three points (two goals, one assist) in the first three meetings. In Adam Carlson’s only appearance at the Infinite Energy Center on Nov. 27, he recorded his first career shutout. Penalty Killing Prowess After holding Florida to 2-for-17 on the power play during their week-long series, South Carolina is now 5th in the ECHL with a penalty killing rate of 86.1%. When the team allowed a goal to the Everblades while short-handed last Friday night, it was the first time the Stingrays had allowed a power play tally since Dec. 28, which broke a streak of seven games with perfect penalty killing. Road Warriors South Carolina has a record of 12-7-0-1 in 20 games away from North Charleston this season, which gives them the most points gained away from home of any team in the South Division. The 12 road wins are tied for second-best in the ECHL. Most recently the Stingrays have won five of their last seven on the road. Rays Come Up Short In Florida One goal was all the South Carolina Stingrays could muster on Friday night against goaltender Anthony Peters and the Florida Everblades, falling 2-1 at Germain Arena. Forward Rob Flick scored the lone goal for South Carolina on the power play, while goaltender Parker Milner kept his team in the game with a 30 save performance. Florida out-shot the Stingrays 32-27 in the contest. Two middle period goals were the only offense Florida needed in front of Peters, who finished the game with 26 saves to earn his third victory of the year over South Carolina. Special teams play was a big part of the game, as both teams earned extensive time with the manadvantage. Each team netted one goal with the extra attacker, as South Carolina finished 1-for-5 and Florida ended at 1-for-7. All 15 infractions in the game took place during the first two periods and both teams stayed clear of the penalty box in the third. Streak Ends With 3-1 Loss To Everblades Despite out-shooting the Florida Everblades 35-26, the South Carolina Stingrays were held quiet by goaltender Anthony Peters and fell 3-1 Wednesday night at Germain Arena. The loss ended the Stingrays winning streak that had spanned seven games dating back to Dec. 27. Steven McParland scored the lone goal in the loss for South Carolina late in the first period, while SC netminder Parker Milner made 23 saves. After taking a minor penalty for slashing, McParland got the Stingrays on the board by scoring his ninth of the year on the breakaway. The play was started by forward Patrick Gaul who blocked a shot in his own end and got the puck to McParland just as he exited the box. The rookie forward put the puck 5-hole on Peters to make it 3-1. South Carolina was unable to beat Peters in the final 40 minutes of the game and suffered the loss despite outshooting the Everblades in all three periods.
