Stingrays Go Up Against Greenville For 7th Time Thursday The South Carolina Stingrays travel to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Thursday night to face the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the seventh time during the 2017-18 season. The Rays have fared well this year against Greenville, posting a 4-1-1 record in the first six meetings including wins in the last two contests between the two. The Swamp Rabbits have recent wins over Atlanta and Jacksonville, as well as a split at home against the Manchester Monarchs. South Carolina is four points ahead of Greenville in the ECHL’s South Division standings with 36 points through 25 games, while the Swamp Rabbits have played in 27 contests. Greenville is the top offensive team in the league, averaging just under four goals per game to go along with the fifth-best power play at 20.3%. While South Carolina boasts the second-best defensive unit in the ECHL, allowing just 2.48 goals per game to go along with the second-best penalty kill at 89.8%. Jakaitis Shuts Out Florida, Rays Take Series Paul Geiger scored the only goal of the night shorthanded in the third period and Jeff Jakaitis stopped all 18 shots that came his way as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Florida Everblades 1-0 at Germain Arena on Saturday night. With the victory, the Stingrays took the threegame series this week on the road by a score of two games to one. After a penalty to defenseman Frankie Simonelli for slashing at 9:13 of the third, Patrick Gaul got out on the rush and moved into the offensive zone. The forward pulled a spin move at the side of the net and fed the puck in front to Geiger, who was charging down the ice at full speed. Geiger hit the back of the net with a quick release and scored his third goal of the season and his second in as many nights.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Swamp Rabbits Greenville split with Manchester at home and defeated Jacksonville on the road last week, playing three games in as many days. The Swamp Rabbits have an overall mark of 15-10-2-0 and are in third place in the ECHL’s South Division behind the Stingrays and ahead of the Gladiators and Solar Bears. The team’s top ranked offense has taken some hits as of late, losing leading scorer Caleb Herbert to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, as well as Allan McPherson, who signed a contract overseas this week. Forward Branden Troock, who is still at the top of the ECHL league leaders with 33 points in 26 games, will be expected to pick up the slack along with forward Joe Basaraba who has 21 points on six goals and 15 assists this year. Defenseman Joe Houk, who has been a thorn in the Stingrays’ side, leads the team’s blueliners with 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists while rookie defenseman Sergey Zborovskiy has 15 points on five goals and 10 assists. Second-year goaltender Brandon Halverson has made 16 appearances, while Ty Rimmer has suited up 15 times and has the better numbers of the two with a GAA of 3.54 and a save percentage at 0.908. All-Time History vs. Greenville South Carolina has an overall record of 58-31-9-10 in 108 all-time regular season meetings with the Swamp Rabbits, and are 4-2 against their in-state rival in the playoffs after the teams’ met for the first time with a 6-game series last spring. Last year during the 201617 season, the divisional opponents met 14 times with the Stingrays and first-year head coach Ryan Warsofsky finishing 9-2-3-0. This season the two squads match up 12 total times. Thus far Rays are 4-1-1 in the first six of those contests. Cammarata Coming Into His Own Rookie forward Taylor Cammarata’s 9-game point streak came to an end Saturday night in Florida. It was the first time he had been held off the scoresheet since Nov. 19 and only the second game he hasn’t had a point in this season. The Plymouth, Minn. native has been very effective at the offensive end since being inserted into the lineup last month, scoring points in 11 of his first 13 professional games and collecting a total of 15 points on seven goals and eight assists. Cammarata is also tops among all active skaters with a 28% shooting percentage. Leach Expands His Offensive Role Stingrays’ defenseman Joey Leach has stepped up the offensive side of his game as of late, posting seven points in his last four games. The Wadena, Sask. native scored his first goal of the year last Sunday in Atlanta, blasting a shot by goaltender Dan Vladar in the first period. He followed up the performance with another first period goal to get SC on the board during Wednesday night’s win in Florida. Then when the Everblades pulled goaltender Callum Booth for an extra attacker, Leach was able to hit the empty net from his own goal line to seal the win. Now in his fifth professional season, Leach has 12 total points (3g, 9a) and was on the scoresheet in each of the Rays’ games in Florida last week.
