SC Aims For Sweep on Sunday in Orlando The South Carolina Stingrays are looking to sweep their three-game series in Orlando and go unbeaten on the week when they drop the puck on Sunday afternoon at the Amway Center. The Rays have won back-to-back shootouts in the sunshine state to begin the series in a potential preview of the first round of the 2018 Kelly Cup Playoffs. With the teams currently in second and third place in the South Division standings, the Stingrays and Solar Bears may see each other when postseason play begins next month. South Carolina has clinched their berth in the playoffs with 91 points thru 64 games and recently won their 42nd game of the season. Orlando nailed down their place in the postseason when Jacksonville lost to Greenville on Saturday night. The Stingrays hold the top spot in the ECHL both defensively and on the penalty kill, allowing just 2.16 goals per game while killing off 90% of their opponents’ power plays. The Solar Bears have had more trouble defending this year, ranking 16th in goals against (3.24) and 13th on the penalty kill (83.3%). Stingrays Earn Third Straight Shootout Win, 2-1 The South Carolina Stingrays won in a shootout for the third consecutive game and picked up victory No. 42 of the season Friday night, topping the Orlando Solar Bears by a 2-1 score at the Amway Center. Goaltender Parker Milner led the way for SC with 23 saves in regulation, a perfect 3-for-3 mark in the shootout and an assist on the only Stingrays goal of the night. Forward Patrick Megannety picked up the lone strike for the Rays in the game, scoring his fourth goal of the season while the team was shorthanded early on in the first period. The Stingrays also had the edge in shots on goal during the game, 35-24.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Solar Bears Orlando is in third place in the ECHL’s South Division with a record of 31-27-6-3 and 71 points thru 67 games during the 2017-18 year. Forward Max Novak has led the way offensively with 53 points on 20 goals and 33 assists while playing in 61 of the team’s contests. Forward Hunter Fejes has also made a major impact to the team’s offense since coming over in a midseason trade with Wheeling. He has totaled 55 points on 27 goals and 28 assists in 65 games with the two teams this year, and Thursday earned a call-up to the AHL, signing a PTO with the team’s affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Defenseman Nolan Valleau is having a big year on the blue line with 31 points in 39 games and has recently returned to the team after AHL call-ups with the Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs. Goaltender Cal Heeter has made more starts than any other Solar Bears’ netminder, appearing in 41 games with a goals against average of 2.83 and a save percentage at 0.911. All-Time History vs. Orlando South Carolina has an all-time record of 33-12-4-5 vs. the Solar Bears, with the two teams having faced each other 54 times over the last six seasons. A year ago, SC and Orlando split their eight matchups evenly with each side winning four apiece. Sunday’s contest is the 10th meeting between the two division foes this season, with the Stingrays having won the last five after dropping the first four earlier in the year. The two teams still have one more meeting on the schedule which comes as the regular season finale at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, April 7. Shootout Streak Continues South Carolina has won three consecutive road games in a shootout this week against Atlanta and Orlando. The Rays haven’t allowed more than two goals in any of the contests, with goaltender Parker Milner backstopping the team in all three wins. Forward Steven Whitney had the winner in the third round of the first two shootouts, while Kelly Zajac produced the only strike in the third skill session in Orlando on Friday night. Kamrass’ Leads Third Period Comeback Rookie forward Jake Kamrass registered his first professional point Monday night in a 3-2 shootout win over the Atlanta Gladiators. He then built off the performance Wednesday night in Orlando to help SC come from behind in the third period and defeat the Solar Bears. Kamrass recorded an assist during a 2-on-1 rush with Paul Geiger to pull the Rays within one goal before scoring his first pro tally with a deflection 12 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. After recently finishing a 4-year career with UMass-Lowell in the Hockey East, Kamrass signed with the Stingrays last week. Milner Time Goaltender Parker Milner has been outstanding all season for South Carolina and has a record of 24-6-3-0 in 32 appearances for the Stingrays this season. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native’s goals-against average of 1.90 leads the league among qualifying netminders, while his save percentage at 0.929 is third-best in the ECHL. Now in his fifth professional season, Milner has appeared in 170 career ECHL games and 26 AHL contests.
