Life Membership to Gordon Porter Congratulations to Gordon Porter who was awarded Life Membership of SMLSC at the AGM. Gordon has been a member since a Nipper and has progressed through the ranks quietly but with purpose. He was elected to Committee in 2000 and has since held the position of Powercraft Manager. With this role comes the responsibility of training IRB drivers and crews (amongst others) a mandatory part of our patrol service. He manages all matters pertaining to rescue craft efficiently both for patrol and competition.

There are still a number of positions that were not filled so if you know of anyone who is interested in being involved at a Committee level please contact Christine or Anni to discuss.

Victorian IRB State Team Once again this year, South Melbourne was represented in the IRB Victorian State team with Gordon, Steve and Lucy being selected to represent Victoria at the Australian Titles. Gordon and Steve beat both QLD and NSW alongside Williamstown to take 1st place in the Teams Rescue and 2nd place in the Rescue Race. For the third year in a row Victoria earned the overall bronze medal, only 1 point behind NSW, with QLD taking the Gold.

Steve Johnson, Lucy O’Brien and Gordon Porter, in State Team gear with their 3rd place medals.

Gordon has participated in all aspects of club life and continues to support all operations/programs which the club undertakes. He is also one of our Patrol Captains a role he has carried out with great dedication. He has received recognition for his outstanding patrol service/work on several occasions. Gordon is a great role model to our youth membership and continues to encourage members about the importance of improving their lifesaving skills. Gordon is an exemplary member and we look forward to this continuing in the years ahead.

South Melbourne put in a great effort last weekend in Adelaide (17 - 19 August). Our three competitors, Shane Gore, Jessica De Girolamo and Chris Veal, came home with four medals and a number of personal best (PBs) times. Shane Gore has a full set of medals, finishing 1st in Masters 200m Obstacles, 2nd in Masters 100m Manikin Tow and 3rd in the Masters 50m Manikin Carry, he also placed 4th in the 100m Manikin Carry and teamed up with Chris Veal to compete in the Open Line Throw. Chris won a bronze medal in the 100m Manikin Carry with Fins and achieved five PBs to finish in the top ten in most of his events over the weekend. Jessica De Girolamo also swam PBs with very strong results.

2012 Australian Pool Rescue Championships:

As always, South Melbourne was very well represented by Officials with Barbara and Jim Morgan and Mary Veal making the trip to SA to judge the events. Thanks also to Stephanie De Girolamo who made herself available to help out by attending the Team Manager briefings. As we now have a number of younger members graduating to the senior ranks of pool competitions, hopefully next years team will be larger which will allow us to pick up some points in the relay events.

Rescue 2012: The World Lifesaving Championship, Rescue 2012, is fast approaching; less than 90 days away! SMLSC will be entering teams in the Masters, IRB and InterClub (beach, pool & ocean events) competitions to take place in Glenelg, South Australia in November. Entries have been received from over 40 countries. SMLSC will need to finalise teams in the first week of October to enable all entries and registrations to be lodged in time. We have managed to secure a house in Glenelg for the duration of the championships. A shuttle service will operate to transport team members to and from the various event venues and public transport in Adelaide and is free for those who are entered. All event hospitality and entertainment, etc will take place in Glenelg. Full details of Rescue 2012 can be found on their website: http://rescue2012.com.au If you are 16 years of age (as of 7th November 2012) and you would like to be a part of our team, please contact Mary Veal E:[email protected] or M: 0409 219 985.

These titles were held at Ocean Beach, NSW at the end of July. With only one Men’s and Women’s team, South Melbourne was out to show that despite their small numbers (one of the smallest teams in the competition) they were not to be dismissed. . In what proved to be some very tough racing, Gordon, Steve and Chris (Alena and Lucy patients) achieved their best ever Aussies result, receiving 5th place in both the Rescue and Tube finals. Alison and Tiger (Alena and Lucy patients) also had an amazing result (in one of their first races as a team), making the Women’s Mass final and also achieving a 5th place. For this great effort the South Melbourne IRB Team was positioned 9th overall out of 48 clubs, a fantastic result for a team of just 7 people.
