DON, 82, BACK ON THE SLOPES! Skiing pensioner wins cancer battle thanks to pioneering new treatment
Cambridge Arcade is in need of repair
by Ollie Cowan by Ollie Cowan REPAIRS to the town’s Cambridge Arcade and surrounding town gardens are not considered a capital priority, resort councillors have been told. In a report presented to the Southport Area Committee, Sefton Council’s Director Of Built Environment Alan Lunt said there is no funding left in the council’s budget to fix a number of issues in the arcade and surrounding gardens. During the course of the recent Southport Cultural Centre works, leading to the creation of the Atkinson complex, it was necessary to erect scaffolding through the glass roof of Cambridge Arcade. Following completion of the works, repairs were commenced to the roof with the intention of fixing all damaged or missing glazing. However, during the course of these works urgent defects to the roof structure itself were identified and addressed as an immediate priority. Continued inside
Skiing pensioner Don Taylor
AN 82–year–old pensioner who loves to go skiing can finally return to the slopes after winning his fight against cancer. Don Taylor, from the resort, originally refused traditional surgery when he was first diagnosed because he didn’t want to have a stoma, which would result in him being unable to ski – a pastime he adores even well into his eighties. However, after having pioneering radiotherapy treatment at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Don was given the all clear and the freedom to return to the piste. Don was referred to Professor Myint at the cancer centre who offered him Papillon – a cancer treatment which was brought to the UK 20 years ago by Professor Myint and is only available at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The technique, a contact radiotherapy procedure developed for the treatment of rectal cancer, saw Don back to full fitness. He goes to Austria every year to ski and after getting the all clear, he has now started taking his grandchildren along. Don also loves to ice skate and swim!
The treatment means patients have a better quality of life as they don’t require major surgery and the procedure itself takes a matter of minutes. The number of patients undergoing the procedure has also risen by 300 per cent as Professor Myint and his team continue to raise awareness of the benefits. Clatterbridge is now set to open a brand new Papillon suite, which has the ability to treat an increasing number of patients year on year and will now operate three days a week. The specialist team of radiotherapists, radiographers and physicists at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has observed a 30 per cent increase in patients treated to date, rising from 100 patients per year to 130 and the new facility will enable this to grow even more. Don commented: “It’s fantastic that The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is opening a new suite to extend its Papillon services. ”I can’t thank the team enough for the treatment and level of care they gave me, as well as the subsequent results. “Papillon is a truly remarkable technique and it’s great that many more people are now accessing it.” “Now i’m back on the slopes and loving it!”

A MAN from Southport was part of a group jailed for a violent attack on anti–fascist activists in Liverpool city centre. Matthew Coates, 22, from Albert Road, was put behind bars along with five other ‘far–right sympathisers’ who ambushed people going to an anti–fascist benefit gig in July 2012. Jailing the men, Judge Robert Trevor–Jones said: “You are all members or have associations with groups which happen to hold right wing views and positions, whether it be the National Front, English Defence Force or North West Infidels. “It is that common feature which brought you all together to Bold Street because you had been made aware that there was to be some form of anti–fascist meeting planned to take place. “It is quite clear you all went onto Bold Street with a view to disrupt or prevent that meeting taking place even if you did not intend direct violence beforehand. “Of course in that situation involving two groups in confrontation holding diametrically opposed views there is always the clear risk of conflict which is what occurred as shown in various CCTV images shown in court.” He continued, “Although the violence was short lived it was in full view of passers by,

early on the evening of July 6 last year, were led to the cells, their supporters who had crowded into the public gallery clapped, raised their arms in salute and shouted, “No surrender” and “No justice at all.” In the footage shown to Liverpool Crown Court, a group of about ten men is seen confronting the smaller group of anti–fascists, who were about to hold a fund raising event in the News from Nowhere book shop. Some of the group, their identities partly concealed with hoods or scarfs, followed their targets inside and kicked and punched them, outnumbering them two to one, before fleeing. Anya Horwood, prosecuting, said that shaven–headed Coates remained outside the cafe during the entire incident and was not seen to do anything physical towards anyone but had been seen pulling up a face covering. When interviewed Coates said he had been sent a Facebook message inviting him to meet up in the Head of Steam pub in Liverpool and he was aware of the anti–fascist benefit gig taking place that evening. He said that he had walked over Bold Street out of curiosity and “wanted to watch the fight.” His barrister Michael Jones said that Coates, who has no previous relevant convictions, had approached the front of the cafe but did not go in and become physically involved. Coates was jailed for ten months.

Sisters Race for life! by Danielle Thompson
The sisters show off their medals at the end of the race
From page 1 Although the structure was rendered safe, and all of the major water ingress issues have been addressed, there was insufficient funding to complete all repairs and there are still a number of damaged or missing glazing panels. Mr Lunt told councillors: “Structural defects to the roof have now been fixed and the replacement of the remaining broken or missing glazing panels is to be carried out, but any other work is now only being undertaken if it causes a health and safety issue. “Due to a lack of funding this is not considered a capital priority.” Mary Pointon, a member of the committee’s advisory group, criticised the report, saying not enough had been done. “Four years ago I met with council employees pointing out defects and today they are still apparent. “Cafe Matisse cannot be rented out because of water ingress. The council has a responsibility to rates payers and councillors should not allow this to happen.” Councillor Sir Ron Watson echoed Mrs Poitnon’s views, saying: “My concern is £13m was spent on the Atkinson and it costs millions each year. “Repairs should be a capital priority.” The report also states: “Aside from glazing there are a number of ongoing maintenance issues – from general upkeep and the need to repair or replace guttering and lead work, through to aesthetic issues, particularly the need to remove pigeon netting.” The area committee agreed to move the issue to the cabinet for possible inclusion in the capital program.
Cycling plan is rejected Report by
Ollie Cowan A PLAN to allow cycling on one of Southport’s busiest pedestrianised streets has been rejected by the Southport Area Committee. Nine resort councillors voted against the plan which would have seen cycling allowed on the pedestrianised area of Chapel Street and Tulketh Street, a move originally proposed by the Southport Operational Group. Angela Owen, a Southport resident and keen cyclist, made her plea to the committee to pass through the plans. “Allowing cyclists on Chapel Street will only serve to benefit Southport and encourage others to get on their bike and get healthy in the process.” Traffic and Transportation Service manager Dave Marrin presented the report to the committee and said that council officers supported the idea of making Chapel Street a mixed zone. “What the proposals look to do is open the street up to responsible cyclists who can
share the road with pedestrians. “We are not suggesting a cycle lane, just a mixed zone for them to share.” A number of ward representatives, including Councillors Hartill and Booth, also favoured the proposals, but lost the vote by 9 to 6. Councillor Terry Jones also suggested adding an amendment to include a designated cycling lane in the hopes of getting the proposals passed but it was turned down. Councillor Booth said: “We’re not talking about a Tour De France style situation here. “I feel the report should be passed but I would be more than happy to vote for the cycle lane if it was needed in order to get this passed.” However concerns were raised over the safety of some pedestrians walking down Chapel Street. Councillor Welsh said: “Im sure the cycling representatives here are more than responsible but a lot of cyclists are not. “I have experienced a number of irresponsible cyclists before and the length of Chapel Street is not very far to just carry a bike.”

FIVE sisters who ran a 10km race in memory of their parents have raised more than £5,600 for charity. The Turner sisters Gemma Flusk, 31, Sara Hilton, 28, Laura Jane Turner, 25, Rosie Turner, 22, and Ellie Turner, 17, chose to run the Race for Life in Sefton Park in Liverpool after finding out the devastating news that both of their parents, Paul and Carol Turner, were suffering from incurable cancer. The girls hoped that money raised from their run could go towards funding cancer research which could prolong their parents’ lives but sadly Carol, who discovered that she had breast cancer in May 2011, passed away in April this year, followed just weeks
later by Paul, who discovered that he had stomach cancer days before Christmas in 2011. Laura topped up their fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK, which they named Turners Staying Strong, by organising a charity band night in July which she named ‘Turnersbury’ as a pun on popular music festival Glastonbury. And there was happy news for Sara, who married her husband Andy in November last year, who found out that she was expecting before she ran the race. She said: “We would love to fundraise again and I couldn’t be more proud of what my sisters and I achieved with the help of all our friends and family, we raised £5,610 altogether. “As I was pregnant we took it a lot slower than planned but got it finished and we had always said that we would start together and finish together.”

TWO men from Southport were among 13 people arrested in a crackdown on suspected drug dealers. Officers swooped on addresses across Lancashire and Merseyside on Thursday, September 26 as part of an investigation into the supply of controlled drugs in Lancashire. The men, a 30 year old man from Banks and a 34 year old man from Hesketh Bank, as well as others from Skelmersdale, Bootle and across Liverpool, were all arrested on suspicion of Conspiracy to Supply Class A and Class B drugs. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Ashton, of Lancashire Constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: “This morning’s (Thursday) raids are part of an on–going investigation into the activities of a suspected organised crime group and a drugs supply chain that has seen cocaine and cannabis being moved across, and sold in, Lancashire, Merseyside and Scotland. “The activities of serious and organised criminals can have a dramatic effect on our communities. It can ruin lives, fuel other crime, such as burglary and robbery, and can instil fear in our neighbourhoods. Lancashire Constabulary is committed to tackling organised crime and we would ask that communities help us in doing this. “It is vital that people continue to provide the police with information so that we can keep them safe and look for ways to prevent organised crime groups from operating in the future.” Anyone with any information in connection with this activity should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Woman on assault charge was angry about cost of her drink
20 mph speed limits get nod Report by
A SOUTHPORT woman ended up in court on assault charges after she got angry about the cost of her drink at a local pub. Julie Houghton, 38, of Promenade, Southport, was said to have argued with staff at the Victoria Pub about the £3.20 she’d paid for a pint of cider and demanded a refund. When refused she went to throw the drink over the landlady, Sue Kirkbride, but in doing so caught the draught pump and smashed the glass. Mrs Kirkbride was taken to hospital believing that the glass had gone in her eye. Lynne Ingman, prosecuting at Sefton Magistrates said that when staff tried to eject Houghton, one of them was kicked on the shin. Houghton pleaded guilty to criminal damage of the pint glass, and assault charges. Ingman said it was not clear if any glass did actually go into Mrs Kirkbride’s eye, but she suffered no permanent injuries. Houghton had received a conditional discharge for assault in 2011, she said, and was convicted for two assaults on police officers in 2005. “She ordered the pint of cider, charged at £3.20 but felt that it was an excessive charge; it isn’t but that’s the way she feels.” The magistrates agreed for reports to be made, and bailed Houghton on condition that she stay away from the Victoria pub. The case was adjourned until October 17.

THE introduction of 20 mile per hour zones across Southport and Birkdale has been taken one step further after members of the Southport Area Committee voted to approve progression of a traffic regulation order. As a result, blanket speed limits can now be applied to the Dunkirk Road area, Sussex Road area and Fydle Road area of the town. At a Cabinet meeting in May, the cabinet member for transportation approved the progression of the Local Safety Scheme Programme to include 20 mph speed limit areas. As a result eight 20 mph speed limit areas were identified in the 2013/14 Local Safety Scheme Review. One of the residential areas identified was the Dunkirk Road area, Southport and was prioritised due to the number of recorded injury accidents in the last three years. Following a later review it was decided to expand the scheme to encompass a larger area bounded by Waterloo Road, Liverpool Road and Weld Road because findings from pilot 20 mph ‘blanket signed only’ speed limit areas found that larger areas were more successful in reducing injury collisions and traffic speed. Despite the plans being voted through, along with identical
20 mph zones are to be set up across Southport Code NA plans for The Fylde Road and Sussex Road areas, Ainsdale Ward Councillor Ted Hartill voiced his concerns over the blanket speed limits. He said: “I have considerable concerns about these limits. “In the right place they are acceptable but we need to look properly at where the traffic actually goes. “The current limits are not excessively high and nearby roads should not be reduced just because it is easier to make a blanketed limit. “It needs to be looked at more objectively.”

Sainsbury’s poised to open store in Birkdale SAINSBURY’S are poised to open a new supermarket in the middle of Birkdale Village. The ‘Sainsbury’s Local’ will be sited on the former Gastro Restaurant and adjoining Michael’s Wine Bar on Liverpool Road if planning permission is granted. However the proposals, discovered after Sainsbury’s PLC sent out letters to residents and shop owners in Birkdale announing their intentions, have been met with a mixed response. In the letter a spokesperson for the store, said: “Sainsbury’s would like to bring a new convenience store to Liverpool Road. “Our plans include the creation of a 2,900 square foot store with ATM, 20 full and part time jobs being created and adding a new shop front to the vacant building. “A Sainsbury’s Local would aim to keep residents shopping in Birkdale and would not compete with, but complement the exisiting high street shops by adding and retaining footfall
in the village.” Ged Wright, local labour activist and Birkdale resident, told The Champion: “My first reaction would be that it could cause a lot of traffic and parking problems. “I’m really concerned about the possible adverse affect on the local traders and how it could change the character of the area. “Birkdale village is a designated conservation area and I’m sceptical that Sainsbury’s could demonstrate how a new supermarket fits into that.” Birkdale Lib Dem Councillor Simon Shaw commented on the proposals: “I think the two main issues as far as I am concerned are parking and whether this proposal is good for the general vitality of Birkdale Village, which is a thriving shopping centre. “A worry is that a Sainsbury’s Local could mean greater pressure on parking, both in the village itself and in nearby residential roads like Bolton Road and Welbeck Road.

THOUSANDS of tenants across Southport could be owed a reduction in their Bedroom Tax after a groundbreaking decision in Scotland. Last month, Fife Council agreed to alter official council policy to ensure a room of less than 70 sq ft won’t be considered large enough for bedroom tax purposes. The decision has delighted the Merseyside Federation of Anti–Bedroom Tax groups who are keen to see councils across Merseyside emulate the precedent set by Fife Council. Juliet Edgar, Secretary of the group, branded the decision ‘important and very welcome’ maintaining the process of determining bedroom tax liability was fundamentally flawed. “Fife Council has set a precedent: we now insist that councils in Merseyside follow suit immediately,” Ms Edgar said. Both the Housing Scotland Act 1987 and the 1985 Housing Act space standard deems a room of less than 70 sq ft too small to serve as a bedroom. This decision could directly affect a number of Councils, as thousands of tenants across Merseyside are shelling out for the tax despite their minimalist bedrooms. A spokesman for Sefton Council said tenants who think they may fall under this exemption should contact their landlord for advice. However, they maintained as no legal precedent has been set, they would continue to deal with appeals on a case by case basis, until advised otherwise by Government. Despite this, Ms Edgar believes Councils and Housing associations will soon have to undertake individual surveys of tens of thousands of social housing properties across Merseyside. Since the introduction of the tax in April, Councils have been posed with the dilemma of re–homing tenants who now require smaller houses to avoid owning a spare bedroom. As a result of this shift towards small private–sector properties, it is claimed the housing benefit bill has been driven up costing councils even more money. Wirral Partnership Homes explained that 18 months ago there were 30 empty three bedroom houses but, as of this month, there were 163. It was a similar story for Sefton Council as One Vision Housing stated they have now 35% more available houses compared to the week the tax was introduced. Furthermore, of the 111 available properties, 75% of these were two or three bedroom homes. Ms Edgar is hopeful that, despite Fife Council’s decision not setting legal precedent, Sefton Council will follow suit and alleviate what she says is the suffering caused by the tax. She commented: “We want to see the day when the Bedroom Tax stops causing so much hardship, suicide, stress and nightmares.”

BID proposals for town centre THE development team behind Southport’s hopes to secure Business Improvement District status have consolidated feedback from businesses in the town to develop their initial proposals. If given the go–ahead, the BID could generate up to £2.5M to benefit Southport over the next five years. The proposals include: • More events and marketing – delivering new events and coordinated marketing campaigns to drive footfall and boost visitor spend whilst also providing support for existing activity. • More relevant street markets and festivals and more to promote and support our arts and cultural heritage. • Light up Southport – replacing the Christmas lights across the town centre. The proposal also includes making more imaginative use of LED technology to light up Southport at night. • Digital Southport – making the
town one of the most digitally connected destinations for shoppers and visitors. The proposals include delivering a brand–new free to access Wi Fi network that covers the town centre. • Making our town look and feel better – improving the visual appearance of the town’s gateway streets, roundabouts, signage, and open spaces to make our town more welcoming and more appealing. • Engaging BID Ambassadors – engaging more “meeters and greeters” to provide that welcome first point of contact for visitors. • Making our visitors and shoppers feel safe and secure – by introducing an effective business crime partnership and other measures to reduce shop theft and anti social behaviour. • Boosting the town’s early evening and night time economy – better promotion and incentivised marketing campaigns to attract more people into the town centre. • Making Southport feel safer and more secure – developing effective business crime reduction schemes that reduce shop theft and anti–social activity
in the town. • Reducing the blight of empty properties – working with landlords and Sefton Council to develop and market an “Invest in Southport” campaign that promotes and encourages investment opportunities in our town. Helping business grow and prosper – developing a package of business support, mentoring and training. • Managing the streets more effectively – working to stop
illegal trading and illegal begging. Hugh Evans, the BID Project Manager, said: “A successful BID will provide businesses with an opportunity to improve their own trading environment and also the chance to influence what goes on in the town centre. “By investing collectively as a business community businesses will be able to generate a far bigger bang for their individual buck with the clout to get things done”.
THE Grand Launch of the Southport BID is at the Atkinson Arts Centre on Wednesday, October 16 at 6pm. There are two important elements to the BID that sets it apart from other initiatives to improve the town centre, say BID leaders. Firstly, the BID will be led, financed, and managed by the businesses that trade within the town centre. And, secondly, the BID will provide additional services to those already being delivered by Sefton Council and the police. All businesses within the BID’s remit will receive a special invitation by October 7. However attendance is strictly invitation only.

Pubs cut beer prices... but only for one day! TWO pubs in Southport temporarily cut prices of all food and drink by 7.5 per cent last week (Wednesday September 25) for national Tax Parity Day. The Sir Henry Segrave and The
Willow Grove, both on Lord Street, gave their support to the campaign which is aimed at highlighting the benefit of a VAT reduction in the hospitality industry. Prices at the Wetherspoon
pubs were reduced for one day only, in order to show the benefits of a VAT reduction to 5 per cent. At present all food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 per cent VAT, compared to
supermarkets which benefit from a zero VAT rate. Craig Downes, manager of The Sir Henry Segrave, said: “We are proud to support the campaign to reduce the level of VAT within the pub industry.” Lisa Carlin

Salon owner crowned ‘super networker’ A SOUTHPORT salon owner has won a coveted national award for her networking skills. Flutterby salon owner Lisa Carlin was handed the prestigious Title of ‘Super Networker’ at the recent ‘Girls Mean Business Awards’ at a glittering awards ceremony in Covent Garden. The Lord Street Beauty Salon manager and beautician was competing among stiff competition from other businesswomen across Great Britain. Lisa said she was elated to be recognised in such a way, having built her resort business up from scratch. She relocated from Lanzarote in 2011 with her family to the town and took over the empty shop on Lord Street. Lisa said: “Networking is about being a good listener, helping others and learning to understand how connections can be made to benefit others and not just yourself. “I love networking so much, it has given me a great boost personally and professionally and I seriously recommend networking to anyone in business!” The ‘Girls Mean Business’ awards was created by Claire Mitchell to inform, inspire and show that there is a better way to do things in a tougher economic climate.

Support service for children celebrates 25 year anniversary Danielle Thompson
A SUPPORT service for young children with disabilities has celebrated its 25th anniversary. Portage is a home educational and support service which helps mainly pre–school children across Sefton. In Sefton, three Portage advisors support families across the borough from their base in Ainsdale. Since being set up in 1988, almost 600 children and families have benefited from support, which includes structured play sessions to demonstrate to parents and carers how to improve their child’s development, building on the skills the child has already learned. Trained advisors work in partnership with parents, carers and other professionals including Sefton’s Educational Psychology Service. Among the many children to benefit from the service is two–year–old Richard Hart from Bootle. His mum, Cath Hart, said: “With Richard being our first child, the Portage service has taught us so many things to help with his development that we would not have known about ourselves. “Richard loves the visits and they have really

Richard with Portage’s Liz Formby brought him on and helped with his confidence and communication skills.” Councillor Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for children said: “Portage is one of our little–known services that has had a hugely positive impact on the lives of hundreds of families over the last quarter of a century. “Our dedicated small team works closely with the families of children with disabilities and they are very highly regarded by people who have used the service. “I’m delighted that Portage has reached this milestone and thank the team and their support partners for the valuable work they do to support families in our communities.”

LETTERS to the Editor We can’t live on past glories Re: Recent letter in the Champion stating that ‘it’s time for action not photo opportunities’. I fully support what the man said, and more to the point Southport is living on past glories. You only have to walk around Chapel Street, Lord Street and Eastbank Street. The filthy pavements in the area need a good power wash clean sooner rather than later. Wake up before it’s too late. Gareth Williams, Southport
Vandals ruin the good work of Hesketh Park volunteers I feel I must comment on the unjust comparisons with the Botanic Gardens, in respect of Hesketh Park, made recently. What is often forgotten is that Botanic is a garden whereas Hesketh Park is a park and in fact is one of the oldest parks in the country and recognised as such. A great number of plants were planted in the park last year by the small band of volunteer gardeners, many of which got stolen. Vandalism is everywhere, undoing the good work being done to regenrate Hesketh Park and bring it back to its former glory. When I formed the Hesketh Park Heritage Group 15 years ago, railings around the park would have cost around £500,000. Now it would be at least £1 million – and this

was not covered by the Lottery funding which we received six years later. The lake, which had not been cleaned for more than 100 years took a lot of that money. Having fencing around the park would have permitted the gates to be closed at dusk and property policed. These thieves and vandals have to be stopped but until we obtain the necessary funding for railings all around the park these criminals will continue to wreck other people’s efforts to leave something good for generations to enjoy. We all need to be vigilant and report any acts of this kind to the police. Tom Glover, Chairman of Hesketh Park Heritage Group

You may have been baffled Ron but we worked it out! A group of us attended a performance of Alan Bennett’s ‘The Lady in the Van’ at Southport Little Theatre last night, and found it most enjoyable. However, I wish to disagree with Ron Ellis’s review. Why does he feel the need to tell us how confused he personally was by it all? It does the Southport Dramatic Club a real disservice. It was not at all confusing to have two actors playing the
same part, as they were clearly playing them at different ages. And at the same time, Mr Ellis chose to display bafflement at Margaret Hodge’s dual roles. Is not a complete voice and costume change enough? Please give the people of Southport some credit for their own intelligence – they don’t need a map! Rolf Jordan, Birkdale

Council should make sure more people recycle Now that the charge for our green bins has hopefully been put to bed, I have a suggestion for the council. We are all encouraged to recycle which lessens the load in the landfill site and can be profitable financially to the council. However, has anyone else noticed the vast amount of households who ignore this plea. I have undertaken several walkabouts recently on the days that the bins are emptied and it is amassing to see how few people

put out their bottles, tins and papers. The council should investigate this with the view to approaching the people concerned and impress upon them that it is their duty to recycle. This would lighten the load in their grey bins and gain cash for the council and at the same time. Co–operation is what is required. Robert Ryan, Southport

Look at the facts on 20mph zones The 20mph debate looks set to rumble on and on – and that is a good thing. Tony Taylor in your recent letters page explained the reasons why he doesn’t agree with Formby’s 20mph scheme. He also encouraged readers to look at the facts. Early on in the process I committed myself to following the results of the consultation – if the majority of respondents in the consultation wanted 20mph, that’s what I would vote for. The scheme I voted for was the scheme the majority of respondents in the consultation wanted and I think that was the right thing to do. In one 20mph pilot area, the introduction of 20mph streets led to a 22% reduction in casualties, and cycling and walking increased by 12%. Speeds reduced by up to 6mph with the biggest drop seen on roads which had higher speeds to start with. Drops of around 2mph were seen on roads which had low speeds initially. The Department For Transport offers guidance to local authorities on 20mph. The department says traffic authorities may introduce 20mph on: major streets where there are significant numbers of journeys on foot and bicycle; and on residential streets where there is community support and where the characteristics of the street are suitable. This means that quiet roads where speeds are already 24mph or less are certainly suitable for 20mph, but are not the only roads that should be considered, as Mr Taylor suggested. The DfT specifically states that ‘major streets’ should be considered where there are lots of journeys on foot and by bike. I agree with Mr Taylor that traffic–calming measures improve the efficacy of 20mph zones and over time I hope Sefton Council will have the resources to install these where necessary. I have also made enquiries about making Southport Road and Woodlands Road outside Trinity St Peter’s and Woodlands schools 20mph during school–run time, supported by flashing speed signs. Clearly this needs to have public support, which from many people it does. Although the police cannot be expected to carry out continuous enforcement work, they do support 20mph and are committed to enforcement where necessary. I have asked Formby’s police inspector to commit some officer time to SpeedWatch activity in the area, which is not about fines but about awareness and education. Mr Taylor suggests readers look at the facts, and I agree. An independent review of the pilot 20mph schemes has been carried out by research fellow Sarah Toy from the University of West of England. It shows that 20mph limits do reduce speed, accidents and injuries, but that they need community support and ongoing education about the benefits to be successful. If readers have access to the internet, the report can be found online by searching for ‘Sarah Toy 20mph.’ Nina Killen, Councillor for Harington ward

Bid to bring empty homes back to life Report by
Ollie Cowan

Council backs new scheme to help tackle housing shortage in borough sustainable communities. It should provide funding for hundreds of properties and is available to individuals aged 18 and over who own a property that has been empty for 6 months or more. Ian Maher, Sefton’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We know that many empty properties exist within our area because owners simply do not have the money required to bring them back up to a habitable standard and this initiative will make a start on tackling this.” David Ireland OBE, Chief Executive of Empty Homes, said: “This scheme is a real first in England and is a great example of central government working together with the public and private sector to try and reduce the number of empty homes in the UK. “We hope the fund will enable hundreds of empty homes to be brought back up to standard.” Individuals can apply for the loan through their local authority or directly through Ecology Building Society. To find out more about the scheme in Sefton, call Elizabeth McCloskey on 0845 140 0485.

AN INNOVATIVE new scheme which aims to bring some of the country’s 710,000 empty homes back into use is being launched in Sefton. In a joint initiative between local authorities including Sefton Council, the charity Empty Homes, central government and the Ecology Building Society, the scheme will provide loans of up to £15,000 to owners of empty properties to help bring them back into affordable use. Out of a total of 125,413 homes across Sefton, currently 3,315 (2.6%) have been empty for more than 6 months. The scheme aims to help bring some of those back into circulation and provide much needed homes within the area including Bootle. Currently, owners of empty homes are often unable to access funds to bring the properties back into use, creating a vicious cycle of decline in areas with high numbers of empty properties. The National Empty Homes Loan Fund (NEHLF), will enable access to secured loans at a fixed 5% interest rate, and will enable owners to renovate the property to decent homes standard. The NEHLF has been funded by a grant of £3 million from central government and is being administered by Ecology Building Society, a specialist mortgage lender that supports

Annual Bill Bradley Memorial Ride raises £3,000 for Macmillan He was nationally recognised as one of the best racing cyclists of his day and as well as being British National Road Race Champion on two occasions, he also established many records. This year 320 riders took part in two events, an 80 miles arduous ride taking in the difficult climbs of Jubilee Towers just east of Lancaster, the Trough of Bowland and Waddington Fell, or the easier route of 40 miles mainly over the Fylde flat countryside. The efforts of these riders managed to raise a record for the events of £3,300.00 which was presented to Macmillan volunteers at the Cycling Clubs clubhouse in Victoria Park.

SOUTHPORT Cycling Club have raised over £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support following their annual Bill Bradley Memorial Ride. For many years the Southport Cycling Club has organised challenging bike rides to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The events, known as the “Bill Bradley Memorial Rides” are in memory of the great Southport Cycling Olympian, Bill Bradley who sadly lost his battle against cancer in 1997. Not only did Bill compete at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960, he also won the Tour of Britain twice and was 2nd once in that prestigious race.

‘Rubbish Friends’ set for big Autumn clean SOUTHPORT’S ‘Rubbish Friends’ are gearing up for a big Autumn clean with the anti–litter army fixing their sights on the former sandwinning site at Marshside, which has become an eyesore. Cambridge Ward Lib Dem Councillors Sue McGuire and Pat Keith are calling on litter heroes who love their beach to join them for the
season’s final clean at the site on Saturday, October 12 at 10.30 am. “We are hoping for a repeat of the successful operation we had in July,” said Cllr. Mcguire. “The public turned out in force to back the Lib Dem – organised lake clean up and as a result we were able to fill 80 bags of rubbish in less than two hours.” Her colleague Cllr Keith added:

Tourism chief quizzed over festive plans SOUTHPORT Councillors have quizzed Sefton over the resort’s Christmas arrangements, after fears that they had ‘missed’ the holiday last year. Tony Corfield, Sefton’s Head of Tourism, presented a report to last week’s Southport Area Comittee, who had requested to see an update on Christmas promotional activity in the town for 2013. The report stated that this Christmas, £21,000 will be spent from existing public and private resources. Repairs to existing lights and motifs will also be funded from private sector resources. The extent of this repair depends on how much private sector monies can be collected but Councillors were warned that the tree lights in Lord Street and Chapel Street need
extensive repairs and can’t be undertaken as there is no funding available. However, the cost of the town centre Christmas tree, estimated to be around £3,100 will be met from existing budgets. Lib Dem Councillor Tony Dawson, who represents Southport Town Centre, said that he was saddened the Council has not yet proposed any special support to Southport traders and shoppers this Christmas. “We must take our hats off to the volunteer Christmas Committee who have ‘bust a gut’ to get the finance together from the private sector for the bare bones of Christmas provision in Southport. “But what is Sefton Council doing? The report says that many of the lights in our trees cannot be
repaired safely because of no money. “But it also says that it is only hoped to repair the ‘Welcome to Southport’ lights at each end of the Town Centre. “We should be saying that we will repair those lights as an absolute minimum. If we cannot do this little thing then we might as well give up and go home.” Tony Corfield responded, saying: “It is our aspiration and expectation that the Welcome signs will be there but unfortunately it cannot be guaranteed.” Mr Corfield was also quizzed over the possibility of providing free or reduced parking for late night shoppers in the run up to the festive period, for which no decision has yet been taken.

New bus stops for town centre Report by
NUMBER ONE FOR QUALITY & VALUE
BUS interchange improvements to Southport Town Centre are to be introduced to improve connectivity between stops on Lord Street and Southport Railway Station. In a report put before Southport Area Committee, Merseytravel say a thorough survey has been carried out looking into a overhaul of bus stop locations in the town centre. The plans also aim to address problems with an exceptionally busy bus stop on Eastbank Street outside the Arriva offices which is used by 12 services per hour per day and over half a million passengers each year. A secondary bus stop will be added outside Specsavers and the current disabled parking spaces for blue badge holders will be moved to the south–westerly side of the street. The manager of Specsavers Southport made a number of observations about the plans, saying that moving the disabled parking places to the other side of Eastbank Street would cause inconvenience to blue badge holders. Councillor Tony Dawson also raised concerns about the siting, adding: “Moving disabled spaces away from Chapel Street may cause issues as over 80% of shoppers in the town will want to go to Chapel Street. “It is one of our main shopping locations. “On the issue of bus stops being

outside shops, would the dead wall of the TK Maxx store which faces Eastbank Street not be a good place to put it instead?” However Richard Oglethorpe, Senior Matrix Officer at Merseytravel, said: “I don’t think that’s where this articular bus stop should be. “When we carry out these studies we always try to locate them where they should go. Councillor Terry Jones also queried the amount of public consultation that had been carried out with public transport users. “We haven’t had any direct consultation with users,” said Mr Oglethorpe, “but as a sign of practice people will want the bus stops in the places that they are going.” To better improve connectivity between Lord Street and and Southport Railway station two new bus stops will be added on the main boulevard, with one sited outside Wayfarers Arcade and the other outside HSBC Bank. Advice has been sought from the manager from HSBC bank regarding how they will receive bullion deliveries once the proposed bus stop is in position. Merseytravel say they are aware of the conservation status of Lord Street, hence their suggestion to use the highest quality shelter range available, which are constructed from glass and stainless steel. These have been approved for use by Liverpool City Council in their city centre conservation areas.

I’M being rather upstaged I fear – and I don’t mind a bit. After all, this column is entitled ‘One Man & His Dog’ – yet recently it’s mainly about one man – me – banging on about my own hobby horses, with little mention of my partner in crime, my dog, Tina. And since without Tina (and her predecessor) this column would never have existed in the first place, and without my taking Tina for walks I would have had far less to fulminate about anyway, this is, I suppose, hardly fair. But however puffed up with importance I may have felt, the reality was borne in upon me a couple of weeks ago by a charming elderly lady I encountered on a footpath twixt Ormskirk and Aughton. This woman was walking her Ormskirk Heeler when we met. Now Ormskirk Heelers are themselves lovely little dogs of which you don’t see that many these days, so that was a good starting point for a conversation. We had a good natter, during the course of which she told me that she had lived in Maghull (my home town) before moving to Aughton. She had already admired Tina – “Isn’t she beautiful” – and when I said we had come on the train from Maghull she asked me if I read the local paper – the Champion – because a chap who writes for it has a Rough Collie too, called Tina. And when I said my dog was called Tina she did a double take – and asked if this was ‘THE’ Tina? I admitted this was the case – and she was made up to have met the actual Tina from the paper. “I’ll be able to put a face to her next time I read the column,” she said. I suppose she’ll be able to put a face to me as well – though I admit Tina is without doubt the more attractive of the two. Not that I minded. Tina means the world to me, and if folk want to admire her and talk about her, all well and good. The same kind of thing has happened quite often while walking around my native Maghull and Lydiate anyway. Folk, usually with dogs, will stop and ask if I am “the man who writes in the Champion.” And when I state that this is indeed the case, they usually say they thought so – because of the eponymous dog. And unless the conversation turns to “what is the council going to do about ” it almost always switches to Tina and how good she is. Tina, like most dogs, does have her moments. For reasons known only to her doggy psyche she dislikes any German Shepherd on sight. Which is odd because she is good friends with one owned by a retired postman – but she would attack any other if not restrained. Which would be unwise to say the least since although she may be (almost) the same height, she loses out badly when it come to weight. She also dislikes things that rattle (skateboards, scooters and certain buses) and also people riding bicycles on pavements. I’m sure she has picked that one up from me. Generally though, she does behave in a ladylike fashion when out. She is quite content to watch rabbits doing rabbity things, or ducks going about their own business. Squirrels though should be glad that dogs can’t climb trees – though Tina tries. So here’s to Tina. My companion and friend. I really don’t know what I’d do without her. I wouldn’t be writing this column for a start.
Southport’s monument to war fallen
Councillor Preece said: “We need to take this opportunity to better educate youngsters in our schools about the history of this war. “There is a lot of history and it’s our duty to help schools with the learning process.” Head of Direct Services Andrew Walker responded to say that talks between the council and former mayors was underway. “The council are meeting to discuss the matter over the next fortnight and further details of plans will be released following those discussions.”

SEFTON council are to begin discussions about how they plan to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. Former Tourism boss Phil King raised the matter at the recent Southport Area Committee Meeting in the hope that there would be plans in place for the town to join in the special anniversary. He said: “Southport’s monument is very significant and should play a large part in Sefton’s plans. “As the centenary of World War

SEFTON Council needs to do more to help old people who are lonely, isolated and in need of support services, after acknowledging a failure to address the implications of a rapidly ageing population. The Local Authority also wants to make sure provisions are in place to support the older generation of Sefton financially pre and post retirement age. The proposals come as part of Sefton’s Draft Strategy for Older Citizens 2014–16 which aims to address concerns raised in the House of Lords that there had been a “nationwide failure to address the implications” of the UK’s rapidly ageing population and that Government and Society were “woefully unprepared.” This is nowhere more pertinent than in Sefton, as the borough has the highest proportion of residents aged 65 and over and 75 and over of all metropolitan boroughs in England. In fact over 40% of Sefton’s population are 50–years–old or over, while around 14,200 people aged over 75 find themselves living alone and in possible need of support services. As a result Sefton’s Draft Strategy aims to address how the borough deals with the growing elderly population over the next three years, as the challenges faced by health and social care services increases. With the help of Sefton Partnership for Older Citizens (SPOC) and Healthwatch Sefton, the council have outlined a number of key issues to be addressed which include; giving a better voice to older people to reflect in the work of the council, reduce levels of loneliness and isolation, maintain and act out health and wellbeing services to the highest quality, better financial security, an improved feeling of personal safety and a promise to make sure all older citizens are treated with respect and dignity.

The Strategy states: “The aims are to challenge the stereotypes of older people and to set out how the Sefton community can respond to the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population. The council also wants to: ”encourage older people to build community networks in local areas throughout the borough including the development of inter–generational activities. “In order to ensure that older people have better financial security we will strive to ensure that they have an adequate income by providing more comprehensive pre and post–retirement advice. Southport’s MP John Pugh told The Champion more needs to be done to help the elderly community thrive. “With the number of over 80s scheduled to double in the next decades, its not just a matter of improving care for the elderly, we must help older people to thrive. “We will see our older citizens continue to take an active and valued part in every community and we must be as ready to combat ageism as we are the fight against sexism, racism or homophobia.” Diane Blair, Healthwatch Sefton Manager, gave a thumbs up to the proposals, saying: “”Healthwatch Sefton look forward to building on our existing partnership work with Sefton Council and the local voluntary, community and faith networks to ensure older citizens have a strong voice when it comes to health and social care services. “Our Healthwatch Sefton team and volunteers will continue to engage with Sefton residents and encourage older people to share their experiences of local services such as GPs, hospitals and care homes”. Healthwatch Sefton has worked with local voluntary groups including Sefton Partnership for Older Citizens (SPOC) and Sefton Older Peoples Forums to ensure an older people are represented at a decision–making level, and the views and experiences of older citizens are taken into account.

A NEW project aims to show that it is never too late to take up golf – or enjoy its health benefits. The national Get into Golf campaign has teamed up with Age UK Lancashire to offer an easy route into the sport. The initial stage of the project – which will be rolled out around the country if successful – involves the Southport Golf Academy in Tarleton and its PGA professional James Carpenter. The first taster session takes place at the West Lancashire Wellbeing Centre on October 1 and will tie in to Older People’s Day. The scheme is aimed at an older generation who may never have played golf or want to return after playing in their younger days. It is also hoped the activities will enable people living with dementia and their carers to continue playing by creating a club that understands their needs at the Southport Academy,
• A SOUTHPORT based PGA master professional who had a hand in guiding Rory McIlroy, was signing copies of his book at Hillside Golf Club recently. Howard Bennett’s book is called ‘Stories, Observations and Suggestions’ and all proceeds from the publication go to local cancer charities North West Cancer Research Fund and Queenscourt Hospice. Mr Bennett spent over a decade as the national coach to the Golfing Union of Ireland and worked with Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke, who are all major winners. The book is pitched at the club golfer and those at the pinnacle of the game. It aims to have universal appeal and to explain the importance of control of the mind.

Appeal after plant pot smashed by yobs A SOUTHPORT man is appealing for information after vandals struck at his property under the cover of darkness. Stefan Wcislak was asleep in his Alexandra Mews home on Sunday Spetember 16, when shortly after 2 am he was awoken by a loud bang. “I was startled and got up to see what was going on,” said Stefan. “I looked out of my window but it was pitch
black and I literally could see nothing. “I went back to sleep, still concerned about just what exactly had happened.” When Stefan woke up the next morning, he found one of his large expensive plant pots had been destroyed. “I was very upset because they cost quite a lot of money and will take a lot to be replaced. Why someone has done this I will never know.”

New head wants good school to be a ‘brilliant’ one
Places available on youth work course
by Danielle Thompson A NEW primary school headteacher has spoken out about his hopes for the future as the school year begins. Stephen Smith, who was a successful deputy head at primary schools in Penwortham and Southport has taken over the running of Tarleton Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School. One of the first jobs for Mr Smith, who has lived in Parbold and Holmeswood for the last 20 years, was to thank Sooty’s Plants of New Cut Road, who presented the school with new hanging baskets for their entrance. He said: “Holy Trinity is already a good school and we want to
PAVING repairs to Chapel Street’s pedestrianised area are well underway. Some larger granite slabs and black, asphalt patching repairs will be replaced with smaller granite blocks which have been stored since the original scheme in 2007. Issues have been raised by the public and local councillors about the visual appearance of some paving in Chapel Street and Tulketh Street. The repairs are being funded from Sefton Council’s existing maintenance budgets and will take approximately three months to complete. Work will be carried out in small sections wherever possible, but some disruption is inevitable.

work together to make it a brilliant school, one that stands out in the community. “It is a great time to be part of the Holy Trinity family as it is a time of change, growth and new beginnings.”
A CHARITY is offering local people the opportunity to get a free place on a new accredited course designed to give people a working knowledge of youth work practice and work experience in this area. Woodvale and Ainsdale Community Centre (WACA) is funding the course both to improve work opportunities for people in the community, and to increase the amount of trained volunteers in the local area. The ten week course starts October 3 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at Woodvale Community Centre, on Meadow Lane. The course aims to give local people both the practical knowledge of youth working, but also the practical opportunity to apply their knowledge as part of the qualification. Spokesperson Julia Mackenzie said: “The course is accredited, so students will also get an ASDAN qualification certificate upon completion of the course.”

Costs cut, claim trust after hospital print system is overhauled Report by
Ollie Cowan
SOUTHPORT and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has undergone a complete IT overhaul of its vital printing needs resulting in significant savings, claim trust bosses. After its previous five year contract came to an end, the print infrastructure across the trust was in need of a total overhaul. Staff had been left with a large number of outdated devices and print and toner costs were said to be ‘spiralling out of control.’ The changes had to be made with the least amount of disruption possible as departments in the trust, such as A&E, were unable to go without access to printing and copying for any period of time. After a tendering process, a speciality IT company, Altodigital, conducted a detailed site audit across the Trust’s 20 locations, identifying which devices were unnecessary and inefficient and highlighting the
opportunities to save costs. The audit identified that the number of printing and copying devices could be reduced by 35% replacing all desktop printers with shared workgroup Multi–Functional–Devices (MFD) and reducing power consumption by almost half. Liz Fleetwood, Senior Procurement Officer at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We needed to totally revive our printing systems and our main objective was to achieve a cost saving – which we have already achieved in the short time we have been using the new devices. “The Optimise software has been a huge benefit to us as the toner auto–ordering has removed a lot of pressure from staff and the network is constantly managed, leaving our teams to focus on their core projects. “We have taken this opportunity, with Altodigital’s help, to refresh our print policy – offering guidance to staff on how to improve their impact on the environment through smarter printing practices.”
Health chiefs praised over staff welfare A Government advisor has praised our NHS trust for its “excellent” efforts to support the health and well–being of staff. Professor Dame Carol Black was officially opening Southport and Ormskirk
Hospital NHS Trust’s Health and Well–being Centre at Ormskirk hospital. Trust chairman Sir Ron Watson and trust staff joined Dame Carol for the opening ceremony.
The centre provides staff with health screening; occupational vaccination; support for sick staff; management of inoculation injuries; and access to physiotherapy and counselling services.

shoplifting in Ainsdale. Police will be able to use the new iPad to monitor the new cameras as well as existing ones in Birkdale and Southport. Andrew Walker, Sefton Council’s Head of Direct Services, said: “What we are now able to do, using emerging technologies, is give police on the ground the instant ability to see CCTV images as events are taking place. “This funding has allowed us to provide local officers with an iPad meaning that if our control room staff see an issue or incident, we can alert local officers who can immediately monitor the images. “This could be done from Southport police station or remotely from, for example, a patrol car which might be en–route to the incident.”

POLICE in Southport will now be able to fight crime using the latest mobile technology. Sefton Security, operated by the council, have officially handed over a state–of–the art iPad for police officers patrolling the Southport, Birkdale and Ainsdale area to share. The high tech computer tablet, which will be predominantly based at Southport Police Station, will allow officers to connect to a network of CCTV cameras around the resort which are monitored by the Council’s security services. Officers will also be able to use the iPad on the move using 3G mobile internet or a WiFi connection. The news comes just weeks after £25,000 was set aside to bolster CCTV provisions in Ainsdale Village. Following a spate of burglaries on local businesses in the area, a group called A Better Ainsdale was established to look at security issues in the village. Between January and July 2013 there have been 49 burglaries, eight robberies and 16 cases of

A widower is appealing for the return of a lost coin – that has huge sentimental value to his family. The man, who does not want to be named, sadly lost his wife to illness when his son and daughter were in their teens and hoped to pass down his Krugerrand coin, which is in a collector’s case, to his children. He is offering a reward for the African gold coin, first minted in 1967 to help market South African
gold, which is a popular coin among collectors. He believes he lost it in the Morrison’s petrol garage in Southport at around 8pm on Wednesday, September 18. Anyone with information can call 01704534456.

Peter celebrates forty years as a ‘reader’ Report by
Kenny Parker teaching – helping people make connections between their faith and the wider aspect of the church. After the service Bishop Richard said: ”It was a great pleasure and privilege to be invited to preside at this service of Holy Communion celebrating Peter’s 40 years as a Reader. “It was striking that Peter did not take centre stage (instead he sat in the pews with his family) – typical of his modesty and his sense of calling to service.”

FIREFIGHTERS had to extinguish a blaze involving a tumble dryer... on the first day of Fire Safety Week in Merseyside. Each day of Fire Safety Week, which runs up to and including Friday, October 4, will focus on key fire safety messages which includes urging people not to use chip pans and instead use deep fat fryers and the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called out to Scarisbrick New Road, Southport to tackle the tumble dryer fire in the utility room of the property. Watch Manager Peter Kirkham, who attended the call–out with Red Watch at Southport Community Fire Station, said: “Smoke alarms alerted and woke the occupiers and allowed them to get out of the property and call the fire and rescue service. “This again illustrates the importance of having an alarm working on each level of your home. Today (Monday) marks the first day of our first Fire Safety Week taking place across Merseyside. “Staff will carry out home fire safety checks in properties and the aim of the week is to spread fire safety messages, including the importance of having working smoke alarms and escape routes, as widely as possible.”

‘READER’ Peter Gladney, of St Peter’s Church, Birkdale, recently celebrated an incredible forty years of voluntary service to the church and community. A service held in his honour was presided over by the Bishop of Warrington, Rt Rev Richard Blackburn and was also attended by Warden of Readers Jean Todd. Readers are lay workers in the church, traditionally assuming preaching and teaching roles but in recent years taking on a wider variety of duties including pastoral ones. Combining his ministry with a career in banking Peter has clearly enjoyed his time serving these last 40 years, saying: “I have loved the preaching and

ENTERTAINMENT Something to get Herman’s Hermits to your teeth into at perform at theatre The Atkinson
Dracula is to be performed at The Atkinson Code NA THEATREGOERS in Southport will have something to get their teeth into when Bram Stoker’s Dracula is presented at The Atkinson later this month. The classic Victorian thriller takes on a fresh lease of life in this production from Blackeyed Theatre, in association with South Hill Park. The show, which has a mix of gothic and contemporary, can be seen at The Atkinson from Saturday 19 to Sunday, October 20. This play remains faithful to Bram Stoker’s original timeless gothic thriller. Blackeyed theatre director, Eliot Giuralarocca, said: “I was really keen to draw
on the wide range of theatrical forms that were popular at that time and I wanted to put together an ensemble of strong storytellers; creative and versatile performers that could sing, move well and play an instrument. “I’m really excited with the team we have in place. It’s a fabulously talented cast, with a muscular new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel by John Ginman and original music by Ron McAllister. We have all the ingredients needed to create something exciting, memorable and thought provoking. I’m hoping we’ll give the audiences something that they can really get their teeth into!” It embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are locked in a struggle for survival where only the fittest will survive. Adapted by John Ginman it features specially commissioned live music by Ron McAllister. For more information at www.theatkinson.co.uk/ * The Champion has six pairs of tickets to see Dracula. Simply answer the following question: Who wrote Dracula? Answers to Dracula competition, Champion Newspapers, Clare House, 166 Lord Street, Southport, PR9 OQA. Closing date Wednesday, October 9 at 12pm. Editor’s decision is final.
ELO Experience to play in resort this month
Chance to see TV comics at town venue
THE ELO Experience is coming to Southport Theatre on Thursday, October 10 at 7.30pm. The ELO Experience has been recreating the sounds of Jeff Lynne and The Electric Light Orchestra for many years. 40 years ago, an idea conceived by Birmingham
THE Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club will host a night featuring top TV comedians. Held at Lord Street venue The Atkinson it will feature some of the country’s top comedy talent such as Jeff Innocent, Sully O’Sullivan and Milo McCabe. Milo, who has been on BBC Three show Live At The Eclectric enjoys performing to Northern audiences. “I love performing up North, crowds are more giving,” he explains. “But if they don’t like you then you find out quickly.” Having performed for television audiences he believes that comedy clubs are a more realistic environment for someone to hone their craft. “T e l e v i s i o n audiences tend to be b e t t e r , unrealistically so,” he said. “A live audience are taking a punt on different live comedians.” The event is taking place on October 5.

HERMAN’S Hermits, who had a number one with I’m into Something Good in the 60s, are to perform at Southport Theatre this Friday (October 4) at 7.30pm. They will be appearing as part of The Sensational 60’s Experience concert, which will also see appearances from The Marmalade, Chris Farlowe and Steve Ellis’ Love Affair. The night will be hosted by Alan Mosca from Freddie and the Dreamers. Herman’s Hermits were a dominating force worldwide throughout the mid–60’s music scene. From 1964 the band chalked up over 23 top 20 singles, 10 hit albums, and three major movies. Herman’s Hermits have sold 75,000,000 records worldwide to date. Their chart breaking hits include: Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Silhouettes, There’s A Kind Of Hush, I’m Henry the VIII, I Am, Something Is Happening & I’m Into Something Good. Herman’s Hermits perform over 200 shows a year. Originally Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds started out in the late fifties. Chris later moved on to perform all over Europe and still does to this day. His hits include classics like Out Of Time, Handbags and Glad Rags (which was also released by Rod Stewart as a single) Let The Heartaches Begin, Reach Out I’ll Be There. Formed in 1967 Steve Ellis’s Love Affair
Barry Whitwam from Herman’s Hermits Code NA stormed into the charts with Everlasting Love. At the time Steve was only 17 years of age but with his distinctive powerful voice he and the band notched up further hits, Rainbow Valley, Bringing On Back The Good Times and A Day Without Love. Alan Mosca has been in the business for over 40 years, 32 of which were spent touring with Freddie & The Dreamers. Tickets are available on 0844–8713021, or online at www.atgtickets.com/southport
Production by talented group was first rate Review by
Ron Ellis
• Ladies Day • Too Friendly Theatre Company • Ormskirk Civic Hall AN exuberant show with the background music of Tony Christie’s ‘Amarillo’ to set the mood. The plot is simple. Four girls working in a fish factory have a day out at the races (Aintree instead of Royal Ascot, this being Merseyside) to celebrate Pearl’s leaving. Once on the racecourse, dressed in their finery and swigging their champagne, startling revelations about their lives come to light. Happily–married Pearl has a secret lover; single mother, Jan, is struggling to bring up her teenage daughter alone; Shelley has got into debt big time and the simple– hearted Linda is being dominated by her mother. As the day progresses, the girls watch excitedly as, one by one, their horses win, building up to a big jackpot prize on the last race. Chloe Hughes is excellent as Shelley, despite delivering her lines at a breakneck speed that non–Scousers would struggle to follow. Shelley wants to be a ‘celeb’ but realises she has nothing to offer but her body, an option she is unsure about using when it is suggested by the TV commentator
(Rob Darby at his most lecherous). Helen Haygarth captures all of Pearl’s stretched emotions in a moving scene with her lover whilst Tracey Holmes–Smith, as Jan, gives a comical portrayal of a ladette when she collapses in an undignified sprawl after one glass of bubbly too many. A familiar sight at Aintree Ladies Days. Joanne Wasilew shows her tender side as Linda who finds comfort in the arms of lonely jockey, Patrick, which enables her to stand up to her mother. Star of the show, though, must be Rob Darby who manages to become a Cockney foreman, the suave commentator, a Scouse ticket tout, a Brummie drunk and an Irish jockey in quick succession, and all totally convincing. ’Ladies Day’ is a well written play, very funny with slick dialogue but, underneath, full of pathos and emotion. It could easily have become a TV soap, following the fortunes of these women. Instead, Amanda Whittington has written a follow–up for the stage entitled Ladies Down Under. I do feel this was not the best venue for this particular play, which would have benefited from a more elaborate set, but the performance by this talented group, directed by the ever reliable Cliff Gilles, was first rate and it will be good to see them back at Southport’s Little Theatre for their next production, Peter Gordon’s much acclaimed play, ‘The Reunion’, next March.
TV psychic Sally Morgan returns tonight SALLY Morgan is to return to Southport Theatre this evening (Wednesday, October 2 at 7.30pm) for her Psychic Sally on The Road Tour.
Sally is often referred to as psychic to the stars and this show aims to have you leaving the theatre uplifted and enlightened. More information on 0844 871 3021.

SPORT Wright hails team’s character Southport 2 Alfreton Town 1 ALAN Wright said his team showed great character to turn the game around when Southport came from behind to beat Alfreton Town last Tuesday. The mercurial Osayamen Osawe had a 20–yard shot topped over the bar by Ross Atkins and the keeper saved a long range effort by Scott Brown just before the break whilst Danny Hurst kept out two shots by the visitors but they took the lead on 49 minutes when John Akinde slotted home after Hurst had pushed out a header from Nicholas Fenton. After another shot by Brown hit the post on the hour, but the Sandgrounders drew level when a David Fitzpatrick shot richoched off Fenton into the net. The winner came seven minutes from time when Jamie Milligan’s corner was knocked on by Aaron Chalmers and Osawe headed it into the net for his third goal of the season, making him the club’s leading scorer. • Pictured is David Fitzpatrick scoring Southport’s opening goal. Defeat makes it six of the worst away from home
Wasim tops 1,000 runs to lead way for Ainsdale Report by Glenn Wallworth CARRYING on from last week’s Liverpool & District Cricket Competition Premier Division stats round up, here’s the best of the rest from our three local clubs in the First and Second Divisions. Batting: In the First Division former Indian Test batsman Wasim Jaffer took the batting honours for Ainsdale with an incredible 1,110 runs at an average of 100.91 in just fourteen innings, including five centuries, seven fifties, 124 x 4s and 19 x 6s, with a season’s best of 153 not out against Wigan. Australian youngster Aaron Flaherty took the batting honours for Formby with 771 runs at an average of 45.35, including two centuries and two half centuries, with a season’s best innings of 143 not out also against Wigan. Elsewhere Elliot Ketteringham (FCC) scored 478 @ 25.16 with a HS 84, Andy Barlow (ACC) 474 @ 22.57 with a HS 80, Lawrence Armstrong (FCC) 351 @ 17.55 with a HS 66, Mal Swift (ACC) 345 @ 23.00 with a HS 70 and Adam Friar 344 @ 24.57 with a HS 55. Ainsdale’s Tom Prescott recorded the most ducks with six, closely followed by Tom Mills of Formby with five, whilst
Formby’s Matty Dearden, Tom Simpson and Armstrong all had four apiece. Bowling: In the bowling department, Formby’s Jan Gadzina led the way with 48 wickets at an average of 20.90 each, including five x five wicket hauls and seasons best figures of 7–66 against Orrell Red Triangle, Mal Swift led the way for Ainsdale with 44 @ 16.77, including five x five wicket hauls and a seasons best return of 7–94 also against Orrell. Elsewhere, Nazim Mohammed (ACC) took 41 wickets @ 22.76, Armstrong (FCC) 36 @ 20.31, Matty Dearden (FCC) 34 @ 22.62 and Adam Friar (ACC) 29 @ 21.90. In the wicket–keeping honours Tom Prescott (ACC) took 23 dismissals including 21 catches, with Bobby Eyes (FCC) taking 16 including 14 catches, whilst out in the field Mal Swift (ACC) and Tom Simpson (FCC) took 8 catches apiece. ACC = Ainsdale, BCC = Burscough and FCC = Formby That concludes this season’s cricket round up, I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading my weekly reports as much as I’ve enjoyed putting them all together, I look forward to bringing you more of the same next April, so until then I wish you all the best of luck during the close season and a very happy 2014.
Report by Dartford 1 Southport 0
SOUTHPORT’S abject away form continued on Saturday, this time at Dartford, when they lost for the sixth consecutive time although the fact that the last three have been by a single goal suggests they are improving. Alan Wright chose to play Karl Ledsham and Oseyamen Osawe up front to take advantage of Ledsham’s height and play a more direct game and, indeed, they started brightly. Had Jamie Milligan’s 25–yard free kick hit the back of the net instead of the bar after only three minutes things might have been different. As it was,

everything changed on the half hour when Alan Birchall prodded the ball in from a Lee Noble corner, after one shot had been stopped on the line, and from then on The Sandgrounders were chasing the game. Danny Hurst kept his side in with a chance with a couple of excellent saves and, at the other end, Alan Julian did well to stop another 30–yard Milligan free kick which had taken a wicked deflection. “We played well until they scored,” lamented manager Alan Wright, “but we were suckered by a scrappy goal from a set piece.” The defeat sent The Yellows down to 15th in the table. The next five games are crucial and could determine how the rest of the season goes. Three of them are at home, where the Merseyrail Community Stadium is
proving to be that promised fortress. And the two away games are at Wrexham and Macclesfield, both teams struggling just above the relegation places. So there is every chance of a good run. Fifteen points could well put them on the fringe of the play–offs but still the promised striker and big defender have still to arrive. On Saturday, 21st placed Woking are the visitors and next Tuesday night The Yellows make the short trip to 19th placed Wrexham, whose poor form is the surprise of the season. • Southport play two midweek away games in October – at Wrexham on Tuesday 8 and Macclesfield on Thursday 17. Trust in Yellow is giving supporters the chance to travel to both of these games for a special offer price of £18. To book, call Alan Scarisbrick on 07980 911693.

AFTER faltering in the FA Vase against a team from a higher division, Formby returned to league action with two important wins. Their opponents weren’t just from the same town but originate from the same club. Northwich Flixton Villa were formed as a feeder club for Northwich Victoria while 1874 Northwich are a fan– owned club formed by disgruntled supporters. Having played Victoria in the FA Cup a month ago, Formby are the

first team to play all three. Formby striker Andy Olsen marked his return by scoring in the opening minute. The Squirrels added four more before half time, with substitute John Edgerton making it 6–0 just ahead of the final whistle. He was called upon for rarer things when he had to tahe the gloves from goalkeeper Josh O’Connell after he went off injured.
