OUR TEAM Our Team We are a group of 11 international students from Group T, the main engineering faculty of KU Leuven University. During the academic year 2016/2017 we will be participating in the Ecorace Challenge, competing against other universities to develop the best solution for the inland navigation sector. This project challenges us in different domains like engineering, management and entrepreneurship. Not only are we going to build our vessel and take part in a number of races; we will also write a business plan and defend it in front of a jury.

OUR VESSEL Our Vessel The Maverick Catamaran is an innovative, efficient and sustainable solution for inland navigation. Our vessel will participate in the cargo category of the Ecorace Challenge and will be able to carry a considerable load while maintaining excellent performance.

MODULARITY What makes our vessel unique is its modular nature. The hulls, deck and engine are interchangeable and can be customized based on your specific needs. This also allows you to purchase a more basic version of the boat with a small initial investment, while retaining the possibility to upgrade your vessel in the future. You will be able to return the current module(s) and purchase new ones, paying only the difference in their value. The modular nature of our vessel makes maintenance and repair easier. You will be able to substitute the individual module(s) that are damaged, instead of having to purchase an entire new boat.

OUR VESSEL

SUSTAINABILITY In order to make our vessel as eco-friendly as possible, we decided to use recycled materials to build the hulls and the deck of our catamaran. Thanks to a partnership with Armacell, we will use 100% recycled PET foam together with glass fiber and epoxy in a sandwich structure that will make up the deck of the vessel. Additionally, our engine will run partly on biofuel resulting in lower emissions.

PERFORMANCE Choosing a double hull structure results in a number of advantages:    

Better stability, even with an unevenly distributed load. Increased deck area, making it possible to transport even larger loads. Improved safety because the crew is able to leave the deck more efficiently in case of emergency. Higher speed because of the hydrodynamic shape of the hulls.

Its researchers submit more patents than almost any other university in Europe, and outside researchers frequently cite KU Leuven inventions in their own patent applications.
