According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, it is estimated that as much as $380 billion each year is illegally wagered on sporting events.. “Gambling” is any act that involves risking of money or valuables on the outcome of a game, contest or other event. Betting on sporting events in Iowa is illegal. High risk behaviors: • Engaging in on-line gaming over the Internet.
• Placing bets using 900-number phone calls.
• Becoming obsessed about fantasy sports leagues. • Unusual interest in minor games.
• Shifting team allegiances based on scores. • Associating with other sports bettors.
• Frequently borrowing money from friends or family.
• Becoming defensive when questioned about gambling behavior. • Accumulating debts, unpaid bills and other financial troubles.

~ Counselors can arrange to meet with gamblers and/or their family members in 9 different sites in Northeast Iowa.
• Distance Treatment Counseling Services
~ Counselors can provide help even when people are unable to travel to a counseling site by offering services through phone, e-mail, Internet or regular mail.
• Financial Counseling
~ Counselors will help people establish a budget and/ or develop a debt repayment plan.

~ Counselors are available at no charge to present programs about gambling in schools, businesses, civic groups, churches and other groups. Just ask us.
• All services are confidential. • Iowa residents are eligible for subsidized services based on income and family size. Health insurance may apply. No Iowa resident is refused services based solely on an inability to pay.
