Spring 2014 PCM Course Catalogue Please Note: Tuition prices listed for each course reflect the total cost of each course, (not including potential material-costs, which are set by each instructor). Member Price is listed first, and Non-Member Price is listed second. "Members" are defined as currently-enrolled private lesson students at PCM, while "NonMembers" are defined as all others, (including a currently-enrolled PCM private lesson student's sibling, parent, relative, friend, guardian, spouse, etc.). All students must pay a non-refundable Registration Fee of $15.00 per semester for the first student in a single family and $10.00 per semester for each additional student in a single family. The one exception to this rule is the Youth Music Club at Mayo Street Arts, which is on a sliding-scale, for which the registration fee will be waived for students qualifying for reduced tuition rates (under the $100 bracket).
GROUP CLASSES: Advanced Chamber Music with the Portland String Quartet Julia Adams & Ronald Lantz Course Duration: 12 weeks Class Length: 1 hour Dates of Course: TBA (Group A: Mondays-7:15-8:15 PM, /Group B: Thursdays-7:15-8:15 PM) Ages: 14-19 Class Location: Studio 3 Tuition Cost: $100/$150 Advanced Chamber Music at PCM offers experienced coaching by members of the Portland String Quartet. Ensembles represent traditional chamber music groupings with an emphasis on string quartets, piano quintets, etc. The special challenge of chamber music is in its core definition: one player per part and no conductor. Coaching encourages players to take leaderships roles as the music demands. Players are grouped together by age, ability, and experience, and literature is selected from major chamber music repertoire. Please contact Ronald Lantz or Julia Adams for acceptance and placement. African Music: Drumming, Singing, and Culture Jordan Benissan Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 2 hour Dates of Course: Fridays 4:00-6:00 PM, 2/7, 2/14, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, & 4/18. Ages: 16-Adult Class Location: Memorial Hall Tuition Cost: $200/$250 This course is designed to bring African culture to students through traditional African music. Traditions in African music have been passed down through the generations, and are integrated with many aspects in life, such as dances, farming, festivals, communal work and play, and the transmission of knowledge. Students will learn African music in the traditional way, using patience and discipline, and will perform in a large ensemble with Jordan Benissan, Master African Drummer from Togo, West Africa.
Beginning String Ensemble (Open to all string players, including Suzuki students) Eleanor Lehmann Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 1 hour Dates of Course: Fridays 4:30-5:30 PM, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 5/2, and 5/9. Storm date 5/16. Ages: 8-12 Class Location: Chapel Tuition Cost: $100/$150 Now that you've learned notes, bowing and rhythms, let's put it all together using delightful orchestral selections - blending musical tones with those of fellow string players. Prerequisites: All students must have their own instruments in good working condition (violin, viola, or cello). Students must be able to read notes in first position and understand simple rhythms. Materials needed for class: Your instrument, and other materials TBA at a later date.
College Audition Preparation (Various PCM Faculty Members) Course Duration: 4 weeks Class Length: 2 hours Dates of Course: Thursdays 6:30-8:30 PM, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, and 3/27. Ages: 15-Adult Class Location: TBA (Various) Tuition Cost: $80/$100 This course is designed to prepare high school sophomores through adult students for their college entrance auditions. Repertoire choices, orchestral excerpts, music theory exams, and application tips are all topics that will be addressed in this unique and important offering. (Both Classical and Jazz styles will be addressed, according to the students' needs). Open to students of Voice, Strings, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion. This course is offered with the participation of USM School of Music Faculty (TBA). Prerequisites: Private study for at least one year on your primary instrument. Materials needed for class: Your instrument and solo repertoire you are currently working on.
The Complete Guitarist: Rhythm and Chords I Don Pride Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 1 hour Dates of Course: Tuesdays 4:00-5:00 PM, 2/4, 2/11, 2/25, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, and 4/15. Ages: 10-Adult Class Location: TBA Tuition Cost: $100/$150 This course teaches students how to accompany singers on the guitar. Students will learn solid guitar technique, basic open position chords, common-chord progressions, and various strumming styles. Materials needed for class: Guitar

History of Rock and Roll Don Pride Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 2 hours Dates of Course: Wednesdays 4:00-6:00 PM, 2/5, 2/12, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, and 4/16. Ages: 13-Adult Class Location: Music Theory Room Tuition Cost: $200/$250 History of Rock and Roll examines the roots and history of popular music. Class begins with a look at the Blues, Gospel, and Country & Western, and then moves onto early Rock and Roll, R & B, Soul, Motown, British Invasion bands, Folk Rock, psychedelic music, Art Rock, Latin Rock, Heavy Metal, Glamm, Punk, Disco, Reggae, New Wave, MTV, Rap, Grunge, all the way up to contemporary styles. This course will also examine the role of TV culture and video games in today's popular music.

Ages: 7-13 Class Location: Music Theory Room Tuition Cost: $100/$150 This class starts at the most basic level, teaching students from the ground up how to read musical notation. Jazz History: Ragtime to Cool Jazz Don Pride Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 2 hours Dates of Course: Thursdays 7:30-9:30 PM, 2/6, 2/13, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10, & 4/17. Ages: 13-Adult Class Location: Music Theory Room Tuition Cost: $200/$250 This course presents a survey of Jazz, from the earliest influences on Jazz including African music, Black Folk Music, and the Blues. Ragtime, New Orleans Brass Bands, Chicago and New York Jazz in the 1920's-30's, the Big Band Swing Era, Bebop, and West Coast Cool Jazz will all be studied in this course. Kids’ Music Appreciation Rachel Herzer Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 45 Minutes Dates of Course: Wednesdays 3:30-4:15 PM, 2/5, 2/12, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, and 4/16. Ages: 5-9 Class Location: TBA Tuition Cost: $100/$150 This class will enable students to develop a well rounded musical knowledge in conjunction with their private studies. Participants will be given an interactive experience of classical music repertoire, allowing the students to study the composers, develop critical listening skills, and deepen their understanding of music. Klezmer Ensemble Carl Dimow Course Duration: 4 weeks Class Length: 1.5 hrs/week Dates of Course: Fridays 10:30 AM-12:00 PM, 1/24, 2/28, 3/28, and 5/2. Ages: 11-Adult Class Location: Music Theory Room Tuition Cost: $80/$100 This 4-week course is an introduction to performing Klezmer music, the lively and soulful traditional music of Eastern European Jews. Brought to the US by Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century, Klezmer music has continued to
evolve and change up to the present day. In this class students will learn and arrange a number of classic Klezmer tunes. In the process students will learn some of the scales and rhythms that define this music. The history of this music will also be studied, along with recordings by influential Klezmer musicians. Flautist, guitarist and composer Carl Dimow has been performing with the Casco Bay Tummlers (Klezmer band) for over twenty years. Prerequisites: At least one year experience on your major instrument. Music History for Adults: Medieval Music to Madame Butterfly Don Pride Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 2 hours Dates of Course: Tuesdays 7:00-9:00 PM, 2/4, 2/11, 2/25, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, and 4/15. Ages: 15-Adult Class Location: Music Theory Room Tuition Cost: $200/$250 This course presents a "whirlwind tour" of Western Art Music, with an inquisitive glance at music from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. Enrollment in this class also includes access to an interactive multi-media online course created by the instructor as a supplement. Music History for Adults will increase participants' enjoyment of music through a greater understanding of music and its true historical background. Rock Ensemble John Johnstone Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 1 hour Dates of Course: Mondays 5:00-6:00 PM, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, and 4/7. Vocal Improvisation Timothy Neill Johnson Course Duration: 10 weeks Class Length: 1 hour Dates of Course: Ages: 18 & up Class Location: Mondays 5:00-6:00 PM, 2/3, 2/10, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/7, and 4/14. Tuition Cost: $100/$150 Vocal Improvisation explores the human voice with the creativity and expertise of notable vocalist Timothy Neill Johnson. Participants will learn fundamental ideas and exercises to improve their skills at improvising with the voice. Skills focus on rhythm, melody, words, and sound variation through various vocal techniques. This course combines lectures on vocal techniques and the art of improvisation, and puts these ideas into practice through vocal participation.

Hop the winter doldrums away with music! From J. S. Bach to spinning tops, from busses to railroads, and bears to puppies, the Bunny Collection music will have us drumming, tapping, singing, giggling. We'll rock to an Irish Lullaby, dance the Twist, and becoming bunnies waiting for the cue to hop high into the air! Playing alongside their child, caregivers will learn how to enrich their child's music environment, increase music potential and understand music development. Participants receive a CD and songbook with a broad variety of sounds and activities designed to stimulate musical learning.
