SPROCKET & CHAIN CARE.
How much do you really care about your chain? As racers, we focus our time and energy on the right carb settings and the best engine configuration, but we often forget about the one thing delivering the power to the wheels: the chain. Taking care of this often overlooked device can lead to power loss, damaged teeth on the sprocket or even worse; a broken chain and a trip back to the scales on the track wagon. Here, we look at the correct methods. ROTAX INSIDER
1. It’s not just a chain! It’s a few steel pins that rub between rollers, and it’s your last transfer of power from the engine to the tires. In fact, the pins don’t roll anything, they are only moving back and forth creating friction as the gears and chain rotate together. 2. Take your time. Grabbing the can of XPS Chain Spray, and unloading lube in all directions, does very little lubricating and only creates Page 1
a massive mess. You need to give the XPS Chain Spray time to settle before pushing the start button to your Rotax power plant. We suggest 10-15 minutes for maximum penetration of the rollers and pin. 3. Spray it on the chain, not the floor. It’s ideal to have a clean working space, but more importantly, you’ll never go fast lubricating your shop floor. The XPS Chain Spray needs to be applied to the

links on each side of the chain. With the correct application and patience, this will prevent the oil from flying off the chain due to the centrifugal forces of the clutch, gear and overall rotation of the driver-train. 4. Save a sprocket, and stay aligned. Keeping your clutch sprocket and main sprocket aligned will prevent rubbing against the side links and unnecessary wear on the gear teeth. Additionally, the rubbing will cause a loss of horsepower. You need all the power you can get in motor racing. 5. Keep it clean. Your mechanic wants the kart clean, the chief steward wants to see clean passes on track, and your chain wants to be cleaned regularly at night. Using XPS Brake Cleaner, you can remove all the dirt and grime that collects during your track session. Then, re-apply the XPS Chain Spray so you’re prepared for that 8am morning practice session. Remember, caring for your chain is the most affordable power you can buy. ROTAX INSIDER
