How far are you willing to go in your own life in order to bring Good News to others? Consider the example of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne (17691852), born in France, who traveled all the way to St. Charles, Missouri to bring the Society of the Sacred Heart religious congregation to the U.S. Today the Society has 21 schools in the U.S. and is found in 44 countries around the world. Sacred Heart sisters focus on educating young women and emphasize in their curriculum the need for global awareness and building a more just world. You can carry on these efforts in your own neighborhood, parish, office, home, and see how far the Spirit moves you. —Take Five for Faith I passed one of these schools while walking to Saint Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska from Creighton University where I was attending a summer program. The historical marker explained the history of Duchesne Academy which currently operates as a college-preparatory high school for girls. I had never heard of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, whom the Church
memorializes on November 18th, but she is a wonderful model of a fruitful consecrated life. In 1804 she joined the religious order founded by St. Madeline Sophie Barat with a burning desire to spread the word of God in some distant mission field. But it would be fourteen years of prayer and patience before she was sent to the Louisiana territory as a missionary. From there she embarked on an arduous fortyday trip up the Mississippi River and founded a boarding school for daughters of pioneers near St. Louis. She opened a school for Indians and whites at Florissant, the first free school west of the Mississippi. She worked with the Potawatomi at the Sugar Creek Mission near Centerville, Kansas. They gave her the name of “Kwah-kah-kum-ad,” the Woman who Prays Always. She was officially recognized as a saint when Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1988. A little closer to home is another example of dedication in the consecrated life. Father Caspar Rehrl was an Austrian missionary to the early settlers of Wisconsin territory and in 1858 established the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes in Barton. The religious institute for women owns and operates Marian University and is involved in the work of education, health care, social services, retreat ministry, and prison ministry. “...with all devotedness” by Sister M. Vera Naber, C.S.A. is a book that can be found in the Resources section of the Ark parish library which chronicles the lives of each of the Mothers General who
headed the Order and the move to its permanent location in Fond du Lac. It was written in honor of the one hundredth year of the Congregation’s existence.

world, and to intervene to safeguard the people of God. Think of it as “divine security.”
This weekend’s first reading from Daniel is one you’ll occasionally hear at funerals. It offers the hopeful promise to loyal Christians that they shall “shine brightly” and “live forever” (but also “everlasting horror and disgrace” for those who have not been faithful). This passage is the earliest clear reference to the belief in the resurrection of the dead, a concept God reveals to his people progressively (CCC 992). Even in a time of great stress, Daniel emphasizes God's protection in the person of Michael, the guardian angel of Israel. In the Christian liturgy Michael is the protector of the Church and the angel who escorts the souls of the departed into heaven. Michael is one of only two angels mentioned by name in Scripture. He is described in Jude 1:9 as an archangel, and in Revelation 12:7 he leads God’s army of angels. His part is to deal with the activities of the evil angels who seek to control the
Is seeking Michael’s defense all that important to the Church? Pope Leo XIII (who reigned from 1878-1903) thought so. He wrote a prayer to Saint Michael (there is a short version — shown in the graphic to the left — and long version) after experiencing a dreadful vision in which he saw the great damage Satan would do to the Church and the world in the 20th century. In response, he ordered this prayer to be said by the priest and faithful at the end of every Low Mass. The requirement was dropped with the changes to the Mass following Vatican II, but Pope Benedict XVI and his predecessor urged all to continue to pray it. “Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass,” said Pope St. John Paul II in 1994, “I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world.” Spiritual combat is real. It is good to be reminded that the devil is not merely a symbol of evil but a powerful reality. When we don’t take Satan seriously is the time when we are most vulnerable to attack. Pray the Saint Michael prayer often for spiritual protection.

ARE YOU UTILIZING YOUR TALENTS? God gave each of us unique talents to go out and share with others. Maybe you already share with others if you have a beautiful voice or you're a natural leader or if you offer support to those in need. But maybe God gave you talents that you haven't uncovered yet. The GPS / Spiritual Gifts Inventory is a tool to help you discover your hidden talents. Have no fears that you are committing to anything if you complete the assessment; it will simply help you find the area(s) of your greatest talent or gift from God. From there, it's up to you how you choose to use that talent. We offer several suggestions, but the choice is yours - no pressure and no commitment required. Paper copies are available at all the church entrances or go to the parish website Outreach tab: https:// docs.google.com/forms/ d/1CfmFW0LIkLtqV5W3GrcIRCVgN9b VGLTZz-VuJeM1no0/viewform “To live as He lived … To love as He loved … To serve as He served”

Interfaith Community Outreach Ministry The primary work of the Interfaith Community Outreach Ministry (ICOM) is to connect parishioners with volunteer/outreach opportunities within our parish, our community, and beyond. Some of the group projects include: Kids Against Hunger events, GIFTS Men’s Shelter, Milton Food Pantry, Bloodmobile, and more. This Ministry has implemented the GPS / Spiritual Gifts Inventory, a tool to help you discover your hidden talents. By taking the assessment you are not committing to anything; it will simply help you find the area(s) of your greatest talent or gift from God. Have an idea for an outreach opportunity? Join our group and bring your idea with you!
Meetings ICOM meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Ark Meeting Room. The chair and prayer positions are rotated each month.
