NYCC Finalist Profile Jared Cheung - Cello (NSW) Jared is 16 years old and attends Barker College in Sydney on a Music scholarship. He began learning the cello and piano from the age of three and a half years in Canberra, and by the age of 4, had already competed in and won numerous Eisteddfod awards for both instruments. He began studying under the tutelage of Georg Pedersen of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at age 9, and achieved his AMusA in cello a year later. Jared’s Licentiate of Music quickly followed, achieved while he was a Year 7 student at Barker, and also won several first prizes in the Sydney Eisteddfod, including the Open String Sonata Competition. Jared joined the Rising Stars program on a full scholarship in 2011 (age 11), and was invited to perform as a soloist in the Iguazú en Concierto International Music Festival in Argentina in the same year, as Australia’s only representative. He is also a semi-finalist in the 2MBS Fine Music FM Young Virtuosi Award and has been broadcasted by the radio station in June. Other highlights of Jared’s musical journey include performing as a special guest in the National Eisteddfod Choir Grand Final, being invited to perform in the Adelaide International Cello Festival, selected as a finalist for the Sydney Eisteddfod Pollard Memorial award and a semi-finalist in the 2016 Ku-ring-gai Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, performing as a recitalist in the 2015 National Youth Concerto Competition, and touring Italy and Turkey as part of the 2015 Anzac Centenary Service. Jared has also performed alongside his cello professor Georg in several concerts held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music
