Chief Sealth International H.S. Jazz Marcus J. Pimpleton, director
Overview of Jazz Auditions for Jazz Ensemble I, II, and Combos All Chief Sealth International H.S. students are encouraged and eligible to audition on alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, or drum set for placement in the 2012-13 CIHS Jazz I or II ensembles. Priority consideration will be given to students participating in an additional primary ensemble at school (band, orchestra, or choir). The jazz audition process, held over the third and fourth weeks of September, will consist of one week of full group rehearsals, followed by a 10-15 minute individual performance audition, adjudicated by Mr. Pimpleton along with one of our SRJO grant funded jazz coaches. If needed – students may be asked back for a second audition session which would consist of a sectional performance with other potential candidates to see how the students play and fit together as a section. The make-up of the two jazz bands will be announced Friday September 27th. Upon placement in an ensemble students will be expected to commit to the following rehearsal schedule: • •
Jazz I (advanced) - Jazz I is our top performing jazz band and will rehearse daily from 7:15-8:10 am (before school). Jazz II (intermediate) – Jazz II is our intermediate jazz ensemble.
Auditions are requested of all students interested in playing in either ensemble. Students failing to audition will only be placed on a space available basis. AUDITION DATES/TIMES: To audition, students should sign up for a 15 min. audition during the following windows. Monday September 23th- Trumpets & Trombones Tuesday September 24th – Saxophones Thursday September 26th – Rhythm JAZZ BAND EARLY WEEK During the week before auditions, Monday September 16th through Friday September 20th from 7:15 am – 8:15 am, we will be having an open jazz rehearsal. All students planning to audition for jazz band should plan on attending beginning September 16th. We will get a head start on some of the music we are looking at for our Winter “All Ellington” concert. Additionally we will provide some tips as to what the instructors will be looking for in the auditions to take place the following week. The nature of the student’s participation in this early week will also have some influence in the audition process (i.e. was the student on time during the early week, was the student prepared for the class session with instrument and materials etc).

CONTRACT In signing below we request the opportunity for our student to serve as a participating member of a jazz ensemble at Chief Sealth International High School for the upcoming school year. We understand that: 1. The jazz ensemble at Chief Sealth is an academic class in which students receive grades and credit; 2. That the learning and assessment of student learning comes primarily through participation in rehearsals and public performances 3. That given the one per part nature of a jazz ensemble, not all students will be placed into an ensemble and that students that are placed are taking spots that would have been otherwise available for other participants. 4. That unlike a sports team, a jazz ensemble has no “bench” to draw from when a student fails to meet his or her obligations to the group and that it is therefore our students responsibility to actively participate in all of the rehearsals and performances, to listen to quality jazz performances in their free time, and to have a regular routine of practice outside of rehearsal to prepare themselves for rehearsal and performance. 5. That should a conflict arise we are expected to provide one week’s notice in advance of a missed rehearsal and two week’s notice in advance of a missed performance. 6. In registering for this class, we understand that our student is making himself/herself accountable to the group and we as a family agree to support him/her in fulfilling her commitment. Regardless of the nature of any conflicts, we understand that frequent or trivial absences from rehearsals or events may result in our student being replaced in the group and/or declared ineligible from auditioning the following year.
