Detailed Description Entry MS 24608

1803-1809

Letters to Lord Henry Stuart from sundry London lawyers, the ex-Irish agent, Pierse Barron, etc, including; 27 Feb. 1809 Pierse Barron, Fahagh, to Lord Henry Stuart, re-directed to Foremark, Derby (Stuart’s house, leased from Sir Francis Burdett, a connection of Coutts Trotter, in succession to The Grange, Alresford); “I was very much surprised some time back on being served with proceedings to recover arrears alleged to be due by the late Mr. Dalton and me out of Coolrue mountain. I believe your Lordship is acquainted with the motive that influenced me to become tenant to the premises, viz. a wish on my part to make a commencement in letting a large and then unprofitable mountain, by which means in time a considerable increase would be made to my Lord Grandison’s and his heirs’ rentroll. You must also be acquainted with the subsequent attacks that were made on the occupying tenants, which were repeated at different times, and terminated in the complete destruction of their houses and improvements, the place having become a commonage for the last three or four years, and no rent paid out of it. All this occurred without any attempt on the part of your Lordship and those acting for you to keep me and my tenants in peaceable and quiet possession. Under these circumstances, I cannot believe that the proceedings alluded to war with your Lordship’s knowledge. Therefore, [I] request to hear on the subject without delay, as I understand, if a stop is not put to the proceedings, it will terminate in a record at our next assizes.”

1806-1809

Letters to Sir William Homan from Lord Henry Stuart, including: 6 May 1806 Lord Henry Stuart, Grange, Alresford, to [Sir William Homan]. “…With respect to the mountains, I do not know what we can do. The papers we have hitherto found respecting them seem rather to entitle us to eject others than settle it ourselves. The first act towards cultivating any part, quietly perhaps, should be, to prove we can prevent others from doing it. The country, by your account, seems in a very barbarous state… Nobody can feel, my dear Sir William, more concern than myself at your present position, having been turned out without recompense after your services and all the promises that had been made. Lord Hardwicke has treated you most infamously. I wish my father’s interference may obtain you something, but he is a disappointed man, and from having kept aloof so long, has been passed over with pointed neglect. I have not seen him or heard from him for many months, but have this from some of the friends of his party…” 6 July 1806 Lord Henry Stuart, Grange, Alresford, to Homan, Baggot Street, Dublin. “…I have not heard from you relative to the account in March last. Being particularly desirous of knowing what we have to expect, I beg you will let me know how it stands. I have not heard from Messrs Coutts that you have remitted more than £2,000, a circumstance of inconvenience and disappointment to us. Pray inform me of the causes of this unusual delay, with the state of the arrears, and when they will be paid. After [William] Baron’s ungemtlemanlike conduct, I shall always be averse to his keeping the Rock house on any terms. I forgot to send you a copy of his letter to me, which I now enclose. I am still of opinion, however, that it would be better to get rid of him by allowing some of his unreasonable charges than having recourse to the law. I wish I could hear of the prospect brightening up for yourself, and that you had a positive promised of some lucrative situation. Have you any further hopes on this subject? I am afraid, when my sister wrote to me the other day, you were in the same horrible uncertainty.”

29 Sep 1807 Lord Henry Stuart, Grange, Alresford, to Homan, Dromana. “…[His two last letters] contained a request that you would not remit any of the rents till such time as you heard from me, as I expect that, in consequence of the sale of some lands, we shall have to pay immediately £4,000 to Barron. On being assured of the payment here, which I shall know positively in a few days, you will be written to either by me or Mr. Peacock, to pay the amount of what you collect to Barron. But I earnestly request you to lose not a moment in getting the rents in, as in case of this not being punctually done, they may be instantly remitted, as I have much overdrawn at Coutts, supposing that the money I expect to [sic – would] be paid to the day. It being raised by the trustees for a particular purpose, to pay debts, it cannot be carried to our account till your receipts from Barron stand in Coutt’s books in lieu of remittances. When this is settled, I mentioned to hope that you would draw upon me for £50, and that as we have taken this place on for another year, you would come with my sister and stay some months with us…” 31 Oct 1808 Stuart, Foremark, Derby, to Homan, Dromana. “…I feel myself happy and ready to be your security to any amount you wish. I wish I could manifest my opinion of your kindness and attention, and my entire confidence in you, by some more solid mark…”
