Di s t r i c t Ne w s Message From The Superintendent Christopher Peterson

Dear Howards Grove families, Thank you for another successful year! While the end of a school year can be an exciting time with graduation, awards ceremonies, concerts, and sporting events, it is also a time to say goodbye. Besides our graduating seniors, we also say goodbye to Jean Hawkinson (23 years), fifth grade teacher, and Barb Woepse (25 years), Northview custodian. Both will be retiring at the end of the school year and we wish them the best of luck.

Superintendent Christopher Peterson

This summer will bring a few construction/maintenance projects. We will be updating the fire alarm system and installing a secured, buzzer entrance with cameras at the high school. Next school year, visitors to the high school will have to be “buzzed in” by the office during the school day. The new entry will add a level of security at our high school. All of our schools will then have secured, monitored access during school days. Over the summer break many teachers will be working on curriculum updates and instructional practices. In grades K-8 our main focus will be improving literacy instruction. Similarly, our high school will have a focus on reading in the content areas. Literacy instruction will be a priority in all of our staff development this summer. As mentioned in the last newsletter, the state budget from Gov. Walker provides no additional funding for public education. The budget is currently under consideration by the Joint Finance Committee. An approved budget is expected by July 1, 2013. If there is no increase in state funding for public schools, it will be difficult for the Howards Grove School District and for other public schools across the state to continue providing services at the same level. We continue to work with our state representatives and senators to insure funding for public schools. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding our district or schools. I sincerely enjoy working and talking with all of you. Have a safe and enjoyable summer break! Christopher Peterson, Superintendent

N ort h v i e w Ne w s Northview Teacher Carstens earns National Board certification

Lori Carstens, a fourth-grade teacher at Northview Elementary School in Howards Grove, was one of four area educators who recently received National Board Certification through the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The certification aims to advance student learning by establishing standards that build accomplished educators. Carstens received support from UW-Green Bay’s Institute for Learning Partnership and WEAC free support workshop. “I undertook the National Board teacher certification process after thirty years of teaching,” Carstens said. “With all the changes in teaching standards, assessment, and curriculum, the timing was right, as it refocused my thoughts on what is critical in teaching. The process afforded me the opportunity to reevaluate my teaching in light of the five core principles of teaching and the 11 teacher standards. By thoughtfully evaluating my own teaching and working to create the best learning experiences for my students, my Lori Carstens earned a National Board Certeaching has been reinvigorated.” tification from the University of Wisconsin Candidate support workshops offered through the Institute for Green Bay. Congratulations Mrs. Carstens! Learning Partnership were key to understanding the NBPTS process and the Professional Teaching Standards, she said. “These workshops helped me focus my teaching on best practices, determine quality evidence of learning, and succinctly prepare my written entries. It is a challenging endeavor, but one well worth the effort. It has affirmed my philosophy of education and has strengthened my commitment to ensure my students are engaged, thoughtful, confident, successful learners who enjoy the journey.” Three other educators who received National Board Certification were: Kim Lewandowski of Eagle River Elementary School, Jill Cavanaugh of Monroe Elementary in Manitowoc and Tiffany Schley of Jefferson Elementary in Manitowoc. For more information on the peer-led National Board Certificate process, call (920) 465-5094 or visit http:// www.uwgb.edu/learnpart Submitted by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Office of Marketing and University Communication

The “jury” deliberates in the mock trial, and finds the defendant guilty!

Mrs. Holzman’s 5th grade class with Judge “Lawyer” Luke Schroeder gives a convincBolgert during Law Day at the Sheboygan ing arguement for his “defendant” Kaedin Roethel, while role playing a hearing. County court house.

Fifth Graders Experience Law Day

On May 1st, the Howards Grove Middle School fifth graders, were fortunate to experience Law Day at the Sheboygan court house. Fifth graders took turns role playing in a court room, while learning various roles such as judge, jury, witness, lawyer, baliff, etc. The group was able to tour the county board room and experience the intricacies of passing a new law. Our final destination included the sheriff’s department, and understanding the process of a 911 emergency call. Schools are invited to participate in Law Day on a rotating basis. The fifth graders and teachers were fortunate to enjoy this experience, while appreciating the various roles of our legal system. Submitted by fifth grade teachers, Mrs. Hawkinson, Mrs. Holzman, and Mrs. Perronne Middle School Battle of the Books Comes To An End for the 2013 Season

We had great student involvement in the Battle of the Books Season this year at the Middle School. There were 15 teams participating (60 students)! Teams began competing on March 4, and finished the regular season on April 30. During that time there were 214 battles. Students read fast and furious trying to organize and memorize story elements, book titles, and authors from a booklist of 40 titles. There were many close competitions and at the end of the season there was a three way tie for fourth place. At the end of our playoffs, there remained two top teams. Team Thunder, consisting of Caden Bramstedt, Isaac Bolt, Jack Lilyquist, and Kurt Theobald, took first place. In second place was The Book Wormz, Natalie Englebert, Angela Hayner, Brooke Swearingen, and Cassidy Grubisie. Congratulations to all the contestants on a season well done. Our season wouldn’t have been a success without a big thank you also to our many volunteers, Mrs. Dirker, Mrs. Matte, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Stienprice, Mrs. Strains, Mrs. Johanning, Mrs. Eilers, Mrs. Finstad, Mrs. Harms and Mrs. Wilson, that helped our many competitions run smoothly. A final note of thanks goes out to our generous PTO for funding our bust up party to celebrate all the work and fun students and adults have shared during this season. M i d d l e S c h o ol Ne w s Sixth Grade Musical: Dig It!

On April 17, Angie Houston and Zach Holzer collaborated with the sixth grade teachers, computer class, and the art department to produce, for the first time, a musical performed by the sixth grade students. The play Dig It! allowed the students and the audience to travel back in time and join inquisitive archeologists, Taki and Tut, and their fossil friend, Lucy, as they explored the wonders of ancient civilization. From the farm laborers of early Mesopotamia and Egyptian mummies who rap, to a chorus of ancient Greeks and Romulus and Remus who dream of building a great city, the students discovered and recreated the archeological mysteries of the past. Hi g h S c h o ol Ne w s Howards Grove Team Wins Junior Achievement’s Business Challenge

T

he annual Junior Achievement Business Challenge was once again held at Acuity in Sheboygan. Any student attending a Sheboygan County high school was eligible for the competition. Business Challenge uses a software game that allows student teams to compete against one another as CEO’s of a simulated company. The Howards Grove High School students, faculty and staff held their 5th annual charity fundraiser, Pause for a Cause, on Wednesday, March 20. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin was the recipient of the profits from this year’s event. The evening offered food, refreshments, a silent auction, children’s activities, a dodge ball tournament, and a concert by the high school jazz band and choir. In addition, the high school track team organized our first annual 5K walk/run. The 5K was sponsored by National Exchange Bank and Trust and Jos. Schmitt Construction. While the temperature was in the teens, with wind chills below zero, several staff and community members still came out for the event. Winners of the 5K race were Tyler Biederwolf, track coach, and Lizzy Hill, math teacher and tennis coach.

Students work in the kitchen serving the food and preparing to-go orders.

Students and staff were on hand to run the evening’s events. Area businesses and community members donated food items and silent auction offerings. Thanks to everyone’s efforts we were able to raise over $6,600 to benefit Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. This was a record breaking year! WTG 2013 Go Spieth!

Back in 2010, Chris Spieth was on the top of the waiting list for a heart transplant. Now, with health on his side, the 18 yearold plans to fly to Durban, South Africa to compete with hundreds of people around the globe in the 19th World Transplant Games in July, representing Howards Grove, Wisconsin as well as the United States. Three years ago, Spieth felt extremely ill upon arriving home from his family’s Chris Spieth, Howards Grove high school student, received a heart transtrip to Michigan. After he was brought to plant a few years ago. He now plans to compete in the World Transplant Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa, the docGames this summer in Durban, South Africa. tors saw that his gallbladder wasn’t getting enough blood. However, it wasn’t discovered until later that Spieth had a dilated cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and myocarditis. His gallbladder was acting up because his body was focusing on protecting his vital organs. The gallbladder wasn’t a part of that priority. In early June of that year, he received a heart, a gift he couldn’t be more thankful for. Spieth is that smart kid that everyone considers their friend. So when the good news was announced during passing time at Howards Grove high school, cheers erupted throughout the building. As a member of the Howards Grove high school track team, Spieth competes in the 100m dash, long jump, and triple jump. Last year, Spieth participated in the Transplant Games of America, where he dominated in his division. Not only did he earn a gold in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and the long jump, but out of all the competitors, he had the fastest 200m dash and the longest distance for long jump. Spieth plans to compete in 100m and 200m dash, 4x100m relay, and the long jump at the World Transplant Games in the 18-20 year-old age group. Through the website http://gofundme.com/2djt28 Spieth has been able to raise about $2,000 with the goal of raising $5,500 to help with expenses. Being the great guy that he is, Howards Grove high school is going to help him reach his goal by selling bracelets. They will be sold at the high school office at $1.00 each. We know that he can do anything once he puts his mind to it and will continue to inspire us all. Good luck, Chris! Submitted by Holly Ploetz, Howards Grove high school student
