Welcome to another wonderful summer at The Contemporary Austin’s Art School at Laguna Gloria, a treasured site for experiencing and making art since 1961. We often hear that Austin summers wouldn’t be the same without the Art School. This summer, as part of the continued growth and strengthening of our award-winning program, we are pleased to offer fresh new opportunities to learn and create. New adult classes include Cubist Painting, Intro to Group Critique, Intro to Collage, and Basics of Metal Casting. For teens, new classes include a two-week Working with Wood and Steel series that allows students to go into greater depth with these fascinating materials. Additionally, Skyline Drawing from The Moody Rooftop is an immersive new teen drawing class that incorporates the urban environment of The Contemporary’s Jones Center, where artist Jim Hodges’s inspiring outdoor sculpture, With Liberty and Justice for All (A Work in Progress), is currently on view on the rooftop. Kids can join us for the new clay camp Tots Making Pots as well as returning favorites in all artistic mediums. The Art School is a unique part of The Contemporary Austin’s mission to reflect the spectrum of contemporary art through exhibitions, commissions, education, and the collection, and we hope our students will take advantage of all that we offer! With sculptures by internationally acclaimed artists to be discovered throughout our fourteen acres, Laguna Gloria is an ever-changing outdoor adventure. Recent and upcoming works include new projects by artists Terry Allen and Anya Gallaccio. Also be sure to visit our exhibitions Garth Weiser: Paintings, 2008–2017 and Mark Lewis: Galveston at the Jones Center.
