Waverly Middle School Summer Newsletter 2017-2018 Waverly Middle School, together with parents and our communities, will prepare each student to meet academic and social challenges by creating meaningful learning experiences in a safe, nurturing environment based on the needs of early adolescents. Notes from the Principal’s DeskWelcome to a new year at Waverly Middle School. I would especially like to welcome our incoming 6th graders as well as any new students to the district. Middle school is a time of great change. Our goal at Waverly Middle School is to help meet the educational, developmental, and social needs of our students during this transitional period of their lives. I am excited to work with our students, staff, and families in this endeavor. In addition, I would like to welcome our new teachers: Mr. Brad Doering, Mrs. Tina Kriekemeier, and Ms. Madison Jones. The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 16. All students will report to the gymnasium at the start of school the first day. This day will be dedicated to getting students oriented to their new teachers and schedules. Lunch money will also be collected at this time. Students will have an opportunity to check out locks for lockers the first day of school. Students are required to pay a $5.00 deposit for locks. Students are not to bring their own locks to school. Middle school orientation for 6th grade students will be Tuesday, August 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. At this time, students will receive their schedules, meet teachers, tour the building, and drop off medications. On Thursday, August 17th, 7th and 8th grade students will have a parent/students orientation meeting at 6:00 p.m. (7th and 8th grade students will have received their schedule the first day of school). We look forward to serving the students and families of Waverly Middle School. Ross Ricenbaw, Principal

In order to continue this vision we have created an intramural program in the areas of volleyball and boys/girls basketball due to the large number of participants. The intramural program will allow for increased participation for all athletes involved in these sports. It will also enable students to grow and compete in athletics to the best of their abilities. More information on the structure of how the intramural program is set up will be communicated at our annual parent meetings. The Activity bus will be available starting Wednesday, August 16th. MS PTO The PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) is an organization for parents, teachers, and the administration at Waverly Middle School to work together for the success and benefit of our children. Everyone’s participation and feedback is necessary to achieve this goal. Some of the projects supported by the MS PTO are as follows: · Provide meals for teachers during parent/teacher conferences · Organize and operate concessions during MS sporting events · Sponsor and provide chaperones for school dances · Host and fund Veteran’s Day celebration · Provide meals for judges during 8th grade science fair · Provide refreshments for faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week · Purchase Teacher Wish List items for classrooms (such as kiln, sewing machines, chrome books) · Donate to other funds (such as post prom and library) We do not acquire funds through fundraising, but instead through concessions from MS sporting events and dances. Please consider volunteering for these upcoming events, especially concessions, as there are always plenty of helpers needed for these. As events get closer emails will be sent with information on how to sign up to help with events.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures Before School Drop Off: -Students being brought to school may be dropped off at the front of the building on the west side. Please do not park for extended periods of time in the circle drive when dropping off students, as this will backup traffic. ***The east side, or back of the building, is the designated drop-off for school busses only.*** After School Pick Up: -Vehicles picking up students must use the West Parking Lot for pick-up after School. There are cones closing off access to the front circle drive and north access road after school. -Vehicles will not be allowed to park in the circle drive at the front of the building for student pick-up until after 3:35 PM when cones are removed. ***The east side, or back of the building, is the designated pick-up for school busses only.*** Traffic and parking are a concern for every school when it comes to the safety of students arriving and departing to and from school. Students that attend WMS can ride a school bus from any of the other schools to and from school. This means that students can meet a bus at Hamlow or Waverly Intermediate School in the morning and ride it to the Middle School and can then take a bus after school from WMS to either one of these locations. **Included is a map to help illustrated our building procedures**
