Message from Mr Hooker As another Academic year draws to a close it is important to look back at how far the school has travelled. Over the last 2 years Meden’s continued improvement has propelled the school into the top ten of the most improved schools in the country. Dramatic Improvements at all levels do not happen easily and I would like to thank all those involved in putting Meden back on the map in its rightful position, at the top. This trend is set to continue with record breaking results expected at GCSE and A level in August. For those year 11 students who have worked tirelessly on their achievement, enjoy the summer break and we look forward to welcoming many of you into the College in September. After seven years at Meden all of our year 13’s are about to start their next chapter. A large majority are off to University and on behalf of all the staff we wish them every success in the future. As a school we continue to develop and improve. We have been very fortunate to secure many outstanding staff for September who too will continue to strive for excellence. We must also say goodbye to a number of staff who have given many years of service to Meden both in and out of the classroom. Their contributions have made a difference to many. Staff who are leaving after a period of long service are: Kate Stevens (ICT, Textiles—25 years) Sue Tucker (French — 12 years) Sarah O’Flynn (Performing Arts—14 years) Jo Matthews (History—20 years) Debra Brighouse (Science—9 years) As a school we wish them every success and happiness for the future! Thank you for your continued support and trust. We wish you all a pleasant and safe summer. Mr Hooker

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THE FIGHT AGAINST MORE COUNCIL CUTS! Schools, parents and carers are being asked for their views on plans to discontinue the rollout of the County Council’s Discr etionary Travel Scheme for secondary school children travelling to non-catchment schools across Nottinghamshire from September 2014. Currently any child in year 7 or 8 who travels from an area outside of the schools catchment area qualifies for free travel. The Council want to discontinue this for all future students as part of their cut backs from 2014.

Right to Chose! We believe that all families have the right to chose the secondary school they want to send their child to and that this choice should not be impacted by financial factors but should be based on the quality of education your child will receive. Under the Council’s proposals families are left to pay for the travel if they chose to send children out of catchment. Please help us to try and block these proposal by voicing your opinion before 23rd August 2013.

How to voice your opinion? More details on the proposals and how you can voice your opinions can be found on the following website:

http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/pressreleases/show/views-sought-on-school-travel-scheme Alternatively, you can complete the survey over the phone by ringing the Council’s Customer Service Centre on 0300 500 8080 or call and ask for a hard copy to be sent by post.

Site Developments This academic year has seen the school benefitting from a huge amount of improvement around the site. As you will no doubt be aware we have replaced most of the windows, ceiling and lighting in the majority of the classrooms. Most of the asbestos has now been removed allowing us to begin installing air conditioning units in some of the classrooms throughout the school. All this work has helped improve the appearance of the school building and has resulted in a better internal environment. As a result of requests from the School Council we have also installed over 300 school lockers. These have proved extremely popular with students and have certainly brightened up the school corridors. We have listened to the needs of a small number of older students who have requested larger lockers to store art folders and motorbike helmets; these are available by request to Mr Gibbon. The shade sails in the quad offer some welcome shade in the hot summer weather we are now experiencing and the addition of the outdoor table tennis tables as a permanent fixture are proving extremely popular, being used by students at every available opportunity. We have been extremely pleased with the progress made this year around the site however this development will continue with other new and exciting improvements to be announced very soon.

Student Awards Probus Student Awards The Probus club welcomed two very special Meden students to their annual awards ceremony at the Tudor Barn in Warsop recently. Every year nominations are put forward for the ‘Most Deserving Student Awards’ and this year Mr Gibbon accompanied Rebecca King and Jack Kelly to the celebration lunch to receive their awards, seen in the picture proudly displaying their certificates. Rebecca, a student in Year 10 received her special award for 100% in school effort in school and for managing her responsibilities at home. Jack, a Year 7 student received his award for his accomplishments in school, for the number of achievement points received, for his positive impact on his tutorial and for the way he has settled into secondary school. Huge congratulations to both Rebecca and Jack for their achievements. Well Done!

Young Musician of the Year The Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year competition was once again won by some of our many talented Music students. Massive congratulations to Mitchell Bland and Lewis Deakin from Year 11 who won the competition and well done to all those who took part. Mitchell incidentally previously won the same competition in 2010-11 with a band called Mighty Panda.

Pictured on the left are the Meden Musician students who took part in the competition.

Young Photographer of the Year Winners For a number of years Rotary clubs throughout England and Ireland have been involved in a competition to find talented young photographers in our region. This year the club entered the Senior and Intermediate Competition in District 1220 for the first time. There were some excellent entries. Judging the event were two people of excellent credentials; Michael Davies a former self employed photographer who had his own business in London and was on the Royal List of photographers and David Goff who specialises in weddings, but is a well renown local photographer. Students who entered the competition had to submit 3 photographs on the theme ‘PEACE’, together with a short explanation as to how the photographs relate to the theme. Both judges were extremely surprised at the high level of entries and the decisions were unanimous. Meden students were awarded 2nd place prices in both categories and received the following comments. SENIOR CATEGORY. 2nd Place £30 Natalie Childs. Judges said that her best photo showed good skill of composition. INTERMEDIATE CATEGORY.

nd

2 Place £30 Rose Hemingway. Judges said that artistically she got the theme right. Well done to all of our students who participated in the competition and special congratulations to Natalie and Rosie for your winning entries.

Meden Student wins Achievement Award Well done to Callum McRell, a student in Year 11 who recently received an award at the Schools Academy Celebration of Achievement evening. Callum who has been attending a vocational course at West Notts College as part of his studies, was presented an award for being the Star Achiever for showing excellent effort and commitment and producing the highest standard of work in both the classroom and vocational area. Callum’s tutor, David Donald a Motor Vehicle tutor from the Engineering and Transport Skills School of Learning, nominated him for his “hard work, progress and for producing an excellent standard of work”. Congratulations Callum! Callum and his Meden Mentor Mr M Elland with his award.

News from around School Meden Rugby Players visit Twickenham On 10th November 2012, 10 students from the schools rugby teams went to Twickenham stadium to watch England v Fiji, the match which England won 54-12. The highlight of the day was when the England squad carried out their warming up in front of us before the match. The students enjoyed the full Twickenham experience from walking to the ground with the crowds, half time pie, and the buzz after the match. We are now applying for tickets for this year’s internationals. Training nights for the rugby teams will start after the summer holidays.

Chess News On Sunday 10th February Mr T. Smith took the Meden Chess team to the Eton College Chess Tournament, playing five fixtures against other schools from around the country. Meden School played some fantastic chess and drove teams very close. All but one of our team tasted individual victory throughout the day. The results and point scorers were as follows; Westminster Under School

5-1

Meden School (Rhys Temple)

Abingdon School

4-2

Meden School (Bradley Arnold, Alex Wood)

Worth School

3.5-2.5

Meden School (Clarck Arthur, Luke Hind, Alex Wood(0.5))

Reigate Grammar School

6-0

Meden School

Wilson’s

4-2

Meden School (Clarck Arthur, Alex Wood)

Aside from the point scorers, James Spencer completed the team and also played very well. Although we were missing three regular first team players for a variety of reasons, Meden did exceedingly well against such celebrated opponents in such a prestigious surroundings. The students all conducted themselves impeccably throughout the day and impressed a lot of people. Rather tellingly, our students were the only school of the nineteen competing that wanted to get to the fixtures hall early to offer their assistance to the organisers in setting up. We were immensely proud of them throughout the (incredibly long) day. Thank you to Angela Hind for her assistance throughout the day, as well as Rhys Temple’s father. Well done to all who took part!

County Individual Chess Finals Sunday 12th May, Mr T. Smith took five qualifying Meden students to the County Individual Chess Finals at Nottingham Boys High School; Bradley Arnold Clarck Arthur Rhys Temple Will Wilkinson Alex Wood Whilst all five students played excellently, Rhys, Alex and Will all performed well enough to win prizes. In fact, Rhys and Alex both finished second in their respective age groups and will now go on to play at the Northern Individual Finals in Manchester in July. All five students were a credit to the school and themselves, and Mr Smith was immensely proud of them all. Many thanks must also go to Mr Stower for his assistance on the day.

Business Enterprise News You may have already seen their pictures in The Chad as four Year 9 Business Studies students set up their own company selling products at a recent trade Fair in Mansfield. The budding entrepreneurs, Amelia Boldero, Jacob Johnson, Amelia Cook and Bradley Arnold had to plan, market and fund their own business with the intention of making huge profits and dreams of a future wealthy lifestyle. As part of their GCSE Business Studies, Mr Brown’s Business students worked long hours producing Business plans / advertising campaigns and accounts. On Wednesday 3rd July they set up their own stall selling luxury bath time products for the busy working people of Mansfield. Students competed with many others in Mansfield and their efforts will culminate at the Enterprise Award Evening which will be held at the end of July. Prizes will be awarded for Best Profit / Best Team / Best Service and Product. Their day was immensely successful and despite spending a lot of their time being interviewed and filmed by various members of the Press and Paparazzi, they still managed to make a fantastic profit. If you would like to find out more about their products, follow them on Twitter at @Bombsaway6 Good Luck Bath Bombs Away!

History News Mrs Prendergast-Gray and Mrs Heath put on a show for History students in year 9 when they started the topic of surgery in the nineteenth century. Both teachers (and a willing patient) acted out a role play that showed the true horrors of surgery without anaesthetics or pain relief. The role play demonstrated to students how surgeons in the nineteenth century amputated limbs in rat-infested barns, used dirty knives and saws to cut through flesh and used gin, hymns and a hammer as somewhat questionable pain relief. Students also shared the classroom with rats just to add a bit or realism to the event! Both teachers received great feedback from the students and they look forward to the next one!

Music News We are so fortunate to have some amazing musicians at Meden and the Summer Concert was once again enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to Mr Hind who so kindly took a selection of photographs throughout the evening (shown below).

A huge WELL DONE to all Meden musicians!

News from the Arts Fashion & Textiles Fashion students from Chesterfield College have been showing off their collections to enthusiastic audiences. Meden’s Y10 textiles students visited Chesterfield College to watch 2013 Fashion Show. This included collections from AS Level, A2 Level Fashion and Clothing and Foundation Art Diploma students. Y10 Textiles will hopefully gain inspiration from the show to help them with their own GCSE Textiles controlled assessment this year .

Meden Year 10 Textile students

Performing Arts War Horse On Friday 3rd May, 24 Meden students went to see War Horse in London. All students have a written exam to complete their qualifications which involve writing about a live performance. They showed dedication by making notes on the train home at midnight!

‘Teechers’ at The Palace Theatre, Mansfield 50 students from years 8, 9 and 10 went to Mansfield Palace Theatre to see John Godber’s ‘Teechers’. All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the trip was a great success!

Art Exhibition On 25th June, Meden hosted it’s very own Art Exhibition from 6pm until 8pm. The evening gave us the opportunity to showcase some of the excellent pieces of work created by the talented GCSE and A level students we have at Meden School this Year. Visitors to the event enjoyed music performed by Meden musicians and refreshments were served by student ambassadors. Below are samples of the pieces of Art on show but all pictures will be on display in the gallery section of our website coming soon.

Work Experience Work Experience was a great success again this year and almost all of our Year 10 students were successful in finding work placements. Students secured placements from businesses and organisations of all different kinds including vocations such as hairdressing, mechanics, retail, publicity and marketing, teaching, care and support and animal care. Thomas Hall and Joshua Peck gained an insight into how the Operations Team work within school, and as part of their week produced a very useful booklet to aid future Year 10 students with their Work Experience. They interviewed some of the students at their chosen placements and this is what they said. Left to right: Callum Crookes, Beth Fletcher and Ella Fawkes who spent their week working in the Science Prep room at Meden School. “We are enjoying our work experience, yes. It’s very ‘hands on’, which is good. I decided to go to the prep room because It sounded like fun!” says Beth. “My advice to anyone is don’t wait until the last day to sort out the work experience!” Ella laughs.

Pictured on the right is Kieran Kelly who did his work placement at Portland College, teaching sports to disabled people. “It’s really fun. I want to teach sports as a job when I’m older so it’s good experience for me. I’d definitely recommend this to people who want to teach sports as a job. Kieran continues, “My advice to people would don’t be scared to do what you want to do, just go for it!” We would just like to send a big ‘Thank You’ to all those employers who gave our student the opportunity to experience working life. Work Experience is an invaluable opportunity to young people and it would not be possible without the help and support of local businesses.

Year 10 Aspirations Day On Friday 3rd May we held our Aspirations Day for our Year 10s. Students took part in include a variety of activities, including career workshops and local business people from the Rotary Club and Aspire People, a Nottingham education recruitment agency, held mock job interviews for pupils. Dressed in their smart ‘office’ wear, students took full advantage of the day and found the whole experience enjoyable and rewarding despite being at times a little challenging. Tim Gibbon, Strategy Support Manager at Meden School said: “This was our second annual year 10 Aspiration Day. The day is designed to give students an insight into their options after year 11 and to help them realise their full potential through better planning and understanding. The mock interviews are such a valuable part of the day for the students. To see their confidence lift as the day progresses underlines just how important it is. We would like to thank all the businesses that supported us on the day. Without the involvement of local businesses like Aspire People, days like this would be impossible to organise.”

Adam Cox, a recruitment consultant for Aspire People said: “I currently provide supply teaching staff to Meden School so this was a great opportunity to give something back to the pupils. Aspire People always encourage us to take time out to help pupils, especially in areas where we have skills like interviewing. It was a real pleasure working with the students, I was able to give them some great interview tips and it was amazing to see them grow with confidence during their interview. I really enjoyed listening to their short term goals and long term ambitions. The day was a real success and Meden School staff and pupils were very welcoming. I would definitely recommend other businesses to get involved if they are keen to help the next generation.”

Rugby Extra curricular Rugby club has taken place every Tuesday this year throughout the winter. Numbers have varied from week to week, which have affected the amount of games played and performances of our teams. Meden’s year 7 team has made a strong introduction to their Rugby careers, finishing the season unbeaten in all competition, with a fine victory over Toothill School, Bingham. Meden’s year 9 and 10 boys Rugby Teams played excellently and were a real credit to the school. They reached the final of the Mansfield Plate but unfortunately lost to Magnus. Several of our students have now looked to join local Rugby teams in Mansfield and Ashfield and are enjoying great success at their chosen clubs, with many winning individual awards at recent presentation evening. On another positive note, former Meden students have made their debuts this year in Mansfield Men’s Senior 1 st team, with Jack Parr, Will Limb and Chester Scott gaining call ups to the county under 18’s team. Chester has then been selected to play for the Midlands team and has recently earned an England call up. Swimming Elliot Clogg a Year 8 Challenger student trains with the Nottinghamshire Swim Squad based in Mansfield called NOVA Centurion. He is currently training with their 'A' squad, which involves approximately 8 sessions a week, including 2 sessions that are running from 6am-7.30am. Recently Elliot competed in the Midlands Championship based in Coventry. His achievements are listed below. SILVER in the 200m Backstroke. Elliot missed out on Gold by 0.06 seconds! This currently places him 3rd in the COUNTRY for this event and secures a national qualifying time for the 14 year old boys category- whilst still being 13! BRONZE in BOTH the 100m and 400m Freestyle. Again, qualifying for the National Championships in the 100m. Elliot finished 4th out of 69 boys that competed from East & West Midlands and has gained 8 national times in different events. Elliot will now go on to compete in the National Championships in a few weeks.

Challenger House and the whole of Meden School are extremely proud of you, Elliott and we would like to wish you GOOD LUCK in the National Championships!

Meden Sports Day “Amazing!” “Briliant!” “Best Ever!” These are all words used to describe this year’s Meden Sports Day. Sportsmanship was the order of the day and both the competitors and the supporters cheered for their house with enthusiasm and fervour. Compere Mr Brown certainly missed his calling in life, making the whole afternoon fun and enjoyable with his quick wit and his excellent sense of humour! Students competed in the usual events with the addition of Boccia and a bit of Crazy Golf. Despite accusations of ‘a fix’ from the other houses, Challenger was the winning house overall but a huge well done must go to all competitors and the staff who worked extremely hard to organise the day! Thank you to Mrs Jewsbury for the lovely photographs shown below!

Winners Challenger receiving their trophy.

Game, Set and Match... In the blistering heat, the second annual Meden Pupil-Teacher Tennis Tournament took place on Friday 12th July, seeing three winning pairings come through to take the titles; The Cup Winners - Mr Elland & Mitchell Parker (Discovery House). The Bowl Winners - Mr McDade & Sam Ambrose (Endeavour House). The Plate Winners - Mr Stower & James Kabia (Challenger House). It was truly superb to see so many pupils and staff out on the Tennis courts, with the competition raising well over £50.00 to Discovery House’s linked charity, P.A.S.I.C (Parents Association for Sick Children). The official trophies are being made and will be presented in September.

Year 11 News Celebration Day In recognition of all of the hard work that our Year 11 students put into their revision and coursework over the final few months, Meden held their annual day of celebration which kicked off with presentations to the students looking back on their time at Meden School, with a mixture of laughter and tears. Though not the nicest of days weather wise, this failed to dampen spirits as the celebrations continued through the day and the students enjoyed a delicious BBQ before saying goodbye to school. We would just like to wish all of our students the very best of luck in their future wherever this may take them.

The Year 11 Prom… celebrating in style. Once again Meden chose The West Retford Hotel as their venue for the Year 11 Prom. Students and members of staff enjoyed a wonderful evening and everyone looked amazing as I am sure you will agree from the following photographs.
