INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUMMER SCHOOL 27 JUNE - 2 SEPTEMBER 2016
The Language Centre, University College Cork, offers full-time English language summer courses in General English, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Cambridge and IELTS exam preparation and also offer General English (mornings) combined with an afternoon option of Business English or Focus on Speaking or Grammar Clinic & Exam Strategies or with English for Academic Purposes or One-to-One classes. The General English courses are from Pre-intermediate (A2) level to Proficiency (C2). The Summer School starts on Monday 27th June and runs for ten weeks, finishing on 2nd September. The maximum number of students in a class is 15. Students may register for a minimum of two weeks, up to a maximum of ten weeks, starting on any Monday*.

Tailor-made classes to assist students with structures they find difficult. Exam strategies to cope with problems individual students have: e.g. writing essays, or reading subskills (skim/scan) etc. Skills and systems work on lectures, writing skills, research, literature reviews, note taking, interaction with supervisors, referencing, giving presentations, drafting, paraphrasing, hedging, writing thesis statements etc. Individual attention given to the client in terms of specific language wants and needs e.g. presentations skills, specialised vocabulary, pacing tuition at student’s own language/interest level and attention span etc. Detailed feedback and strategies for improvement.

Course Options General English: Classes are offered at levels A2 to C2 and focus on the four skills including reading, writing, listening and speaking with a generally communicative approach to improve students’ standards of English. The summer school curriculum is based on the 'topic based syllabus' which now incorporates Irish cultural content and supplementary material, functional English and authentic materials for all levels for every week. At the end of each week students prepare and give a presentation. 3
English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Minimum entry level to the full-time morning programme is B2 (CEFR Global Scale), while for those choosing the General English + EAP afternoon option, the offered levels are A2-C2, and there will be skills and systems work on lectures, writing skills, research, literature reviews, note taking, interaction with academic supervisors, referencing, giving presentations, drafting, paraphrasing, hedging, writing thesis statements etc. Places are limited on the EAP Programmes so early registration is advisable. Cambridge English: First (FCE) & Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) preparation courses start on 25th July 2016. These courses focus on exam preparation for both exams which will be held during the final week of the programme. Cost includes exam fee and the course is 4 weeks. Students should already have a B2-C1 (Common European Framework) level of proficiency in English to follow these courses. Candidates who intend to sit the FCE or CAE examination in August can download the general Application Form from our website http://www.ucc.ie/en/esol/courses/summer/ and tick the relevant course option. Note: Students will be advised of their specific day/time for Paper 5 (Speaking) during their course. The IELTS Preparation course runs for 4, 6, 8 or 10 weeks. Students may enrol for the course for a minimum of 4 weeks or up to a maximum of 10 weeks. This course will cover the skills and strategies required to ensure success in the 4 parts of the exam. A book is included but you will need to register separately to take the IELTS exam, either in Cork/Ireland or abroad. Guest Lectures Guest Lectures are presented by experts on Irish topics of cultural and general interest. Topics included in the Guest Lecture Series previously were Irish literature, the Famine, Irish music and sport. Students may also get the opportunity to watch Irish dancing and learn some steps of this world famous traditional dance.

Summer School Accommodation Options If you are attending our Summer School Programme this year we can organise your accommodation for you before you arrive. There are a number of different accommodation options for our students.
Self-Catering Apartments For students who prefer self-catering accommodation, UCC offers rooms in University Hall Apartment Complex, or, if unavailable, Victoria Mills or Victoria Lodge. All are only a short walk away from UCC and this option allows you the opportunity to mix with other students while studying in Cork. 1) Home Stay Accommodation Homestay accommodation is when a student stays with a local family on a Bed, Breakfast and Evening Meal basis. Staying with an Irish host family allows students to experience the Irish way of life and stay in a friendly environment in an unfamiliar country. Our host families are carefully selected and monitored. The cost for this accommodation is €220 per week.

If an original medical cert is produced before the course start date a refund will be issued less the deposit and an admin fee. If a student withdraws after the commencement of his/her course, for medical reasons, a refund will issue less the deposit, fees for portion of course and accommodation taken and an admin fee. Refunds will not be considered on any other grounds, other than Medical, once a course has started.
