100 Days of Summertime 2016

Introduction Welcome to the Fifth edition of 100 Days of Summertime! There are three members of the 100 Days series of eBooks. They are written to take you through the busiest times of the year. Be sure to check out our other members of the 100 Days family of blogs and eBooks: 100 Days of a New Year and 100 Days to Christmas. As a kid, I loved summer. I counted down the days until school ended for the year. Summer meant spending the majority of my time in the place I loved most. . .home. It also meant playtime, friends, adventure, and lots of water.

Now that I’m a mom, I see that summer means much the same to

my three children. And while I still love the lazy days of summer, it is important to me, while my children are still young, that I take advantage of the precious few summers I have with them.

Summer is valuable family time, but it is also an excellent time for training. I want to teach my children life skills, responsibility, and self-fulfillment. I don’t want to see their education come to a complete halt over the summer. My goal is to encourage my children to continue to learn through play, books, and experiences. However, there’s a lot of competition for attention when children are at home: video games, computers, cell phones, television and movies. It sometimes feels like I am fighting a battle between screen activity, boredom, and “mandatory fun”.

100 Days of Summertime Begins! Welcome to “100 Days of Summertime” where you’ll find inspiration for the summer of 2016!

This eBook is designed as a journey from the unofficial beginning to the unofficial ending of summer, which occurs around Memorial Day and Labor Day respectively. It includes tips, activities, and reminders for the end of school and graduation, summer holidays, summer foods, summer travel, summer frolic, and even back to school.

We hope you’ll find guidance and inspiration in 100 Days of Summertime. Are you ready to get started?

Our first Summertime Strategy goal is to create a summer planner. If you prefer a three-ring binder (click the image to the left to order one), then you will need a three-hole punch, 5 to 8 tabbed dividers (preferably with pockets), and possibly a zipper pocket to hold pens and odds-and-ends. If you prefer a more digital approach, try a folder on your computer, a Pinterest board, Evernote, etc.

Happy Memorial Day! First unofficial day of summertime! Memorial Day is typically a day to remember those who have died in service to our country, but many people take this day to remember their loved ones by visiting cemeteries.

If you have the day off from work or school, be sure to catch a local parade. You may want to pack up your beach or pool gear before you leave the house so you can head to the water. Finish the day with a cookout with family and friends. ListPlanIt’s Cookout Planner* will help you decide on the supplies that you need and plan your menu.

A Look at the Summer Ahead In order to make things as simple as possible, it is important to have a realistic idea of your goals for the summertime and set a timeline for which to accomplish them. Planning ahead is key.

One way to do this is by completing today’s Summertime Strategy. You will first need a calendar. You can use your own whether it is Google calendar, a kitchen calendar, or calendar pages. Help yourself to the following from ListPlanIt.com for May*, June*, July*, and August*. Three-hole punch each page and place them in the front of your summer planner. There are several holidays and special occasions between now and the end of summer. Be sure to mark them on your calendar pages. Here at 100 Days of Summertime, we will be figuring these days and more into our planning. May 30 (Monday) – Memorial Day (U.S.) June 19 (Sunday) – Father’s Day June 20 (Monday) – First Day of Summer (Summer Solstice) July 1 (Friday) – Canada Day July 4 (Monday) – U.S. Independence Day September 5 (Monday) – Labor Day

Summertime Goes Better with a Routine Whether or not your children are out of school, it is time to consider your summertime routine. If you work in or out of the home, your routine may look similar to the schoolyear. If you are a stayat-home parent, you may want to provide some consistency and structure to your day.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to consider your daily routine. What time will you and/or your children typically wake up? What are their responsibilities? What are the expectations in regard to watching TV or playing video games? Do your children take naps? When is bedtime?

Work out a typical Daily Routine* and post it in a visible location for all to see. If snacktime is not until 10 a.m., then be sure to include it. If there is no TV or video games until after lunch, then be sure to note that.

End of the School Year Another school year has come to an end.

They

just seem to fly, don’t they? There are graduations to attend, teachers to thank, and memories to record.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to plan out the last few days of school using ListPlanIt’s End of School Timeline*. Be sure to include any parties, special events, field trips, last-minute tasks, and anything else that might be going on during this very busy time of the year.

Make a plan for the inevitably full and busy day with a Graduation Day Timeline*. If you are attending a graduation for someone special in your life, you may want to consider what you are wearing and what gift you plan to give to the graduate. End of School/Beginning of Summer Party It’s time to celebrate! The school year is over (or almost), and summertime is just beginning. Both are pretty good reasons to host a party.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to consider a date and time to host some friends. Make it a casual, backyard affair. Plan a menu, think about some simple decorations, and then let your friends know by sending an email or a handwritten invitation.

Declare it a holiday and use ListPlanIt’s Party Planner* to work out the basic details of a fun get-together.

Responsibilities for Everyone Summertime is a great time to teach some life skills. During the school year, there is a long day of school, homework, and extracurricular activities. Fitting in time to teach children how to take care of themselves in the long run is difficult.

Today's Summertime Strategy is to think about your goals for your children. Does it involve living on their own as adults? What about equally sharing the responsibilities of their own household someday? Adults-in-Training need practice now to become successful adults. Assign responsibilities and daily or weekly goals using ListPlanIt’s Weekly Responsibility List*.

Summer Camp at Home Summer camp can be a great experience for children, but whether a child is nervous about being away from home or the cost of summer camp is too high, you can still get a lot of the same benefits when you plan a summer camp at home.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to create a summer camp experience at home. You can go as far as giving each week of the summer a theme and searching out activities to emphasize that theme. Or choose one week of the summer and really plan it out. Your own summer camp can be as involved as you choose to make it. Use crafts, songs, field trips, snacks, and whatever else might be of interest to your family.

Stocking up for Summer Camp

Like any trip or vacation, there are a certain number of things that are needed for comfort and safety when a child attends a summer camp. The sooner you begin to collect the items needed or required, the more ready you’ll feel when the day comes to drop your child off at camp.

A little running around is in order for today’s Summertime Strategy. You have your checklist of things needed, now begin to collect what you can find from your home first. Then head out to the store to finish stocking up.

Wedding Gift Inspiration ‘Tis the season of the June Bride. You may know of someone getting married this month, next month, or sometime in the near future. Consider this your timely reminder.

Saturday, June 11

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage You may have received a pretty invitation to the nuptials of a family member or dear friend. Saturday is the most common day for weddings and also a good day to plan your attendance. Today’s Summertime Strategy may not be as intense as the bride’s, but even attending a wedding can create a need for a solid plan. Hopefully, you have a gift or an idea for a gift already. Next, you’ll need to choose attire based on the locale of the wedding and the time of day. Do you need childcare? Are there expectations on you to perform a duty? What can you do to contribute to the occasion today?

Life’s a Picnic A picnic can be a necessary part of a busy summer day (e.g. lunch at the beach) or it can be an pleasurable event in its own right. Either way, food eaten outdoors always tastes best. It can be as simple or as gourmet as portability and circumstances allow.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to pack a picnic. Gather up everything you need to make yourself comfortable in the park or on a beach or even in the back of your pickup truck. Pack a variety of different foods that don’t necessarily need utensils to eat them. Don’t forget to bring something to drink. Don’t have a picnic basket? Simply use a tote bag or a backpack to carry the food.

Planning for Dad’s Day Father’s Day is at the end of this week (Sunday, June 19). Don’t wait until the last minute to consider how to make his day special.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to create your plan for Dad’s Day. Consider all of the dads you may have in your life: your Grandpas, your Dad, your Stepdad, the father of your children, the father of your grandchildren. Think of ways to make him feel like the King of the World. If you exchange gifts on holidays, what gift (tangible or intangible) would make him feel loved and appreciated? Would Dad like some alone time or some quality time with the family doing something he loves? Work out a plan for Dad’s Day with this Father’s Day Planner*.

What day will you fit in a visit to Aunt Mildred? What are the hours of operation to the museum? The more time you spend planning your itinerary now, the less time you’ll waste during precious time with family and friends. The Summertime Strategy for today is to add as many details to your travel itinerary as you can. Make reservations when possible. Buy tickets online. Do whatever you can to alleviate unknowns while traveling.

Be a Hometown Tourist Summer is about adventure. And while it is not always possible to go far from home (time, money, and circumstances sometimes don’t permit), there are probably plenty of things that you have yet to see in your own neck of the woods.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to consider things that you’ve been putting off seeing or doing for years because you always thought you’d get around to them eventually. Now is the time. Maybe there is something near you that has always seemed too touristy. There may be a reason that the tourists flock to it. It could be a ton of fun! So think of ways to be a tourist in your own hometown this summer. Note the location, the hours, and any other pertinent information on ListPlanIt’s Hometown Tourist* worksheet.

Summer To Do List Now that summer is in full swing, you will likely hear those words that have clanged against the ear drum of many a parent. . .”I’m bored”. Head off the summer doldrums by creating a summer to do list with your children. Put it in plain view to remind them of all of the options they have as a kid in the summertime. The Summertime Strategy for today is to brainstorm a list of activities that can be done independently. You might also want to include another column of activities that can be done together. Include activities from some or all of the following categories: cooking, reading, writing, arts/crafts, games, sports, outdoor fun, places to visit, and more.

ListPlanIt‘s Summertime To Do List* is a great place to brainstorm.

Packing for Summer Travel While kids are on vacation from school, many families enjoy traveling during the summer. It may be a big trip involving flights or long drives, or it could be just a few hours away. Either way, there is certainly plenty to think about as you near your travel dates. The Summertime Strategy for today is to consider what you’ll need to take with you on your trip. Sit down and list all essentials, documents, and comfort items. Be practical. Will there be laundry facilities nearby? Will you be near a store to purchase items that are too heavy or bulky to carry with you? Do you really need 8 pairs of shoes?

Summertime Safety Summer is notoriously a time when children have more independence and less structure. It is a time when the sun beats down on bare skin, bugs and poisonous plants are out in force, and young adventurers seek summer thrills. Summer is also a time when Mother Nature shows her power. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods have residents watching the weather channel for advanced warning.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to consider your family’s safety needs. Are you stocked up on sunscreen, bug spray, and calamine lotion? Do you have a plan if a natural disaster were to strike your area? Are your valuables and documents organized and safe from harm? Do what you can today to make disasters less disastrous.

Great American Backyard Campout Camping is a fun and inexpensive way to vacation as a family. Every year on this weekend, the National Wildlife Foundation hosts the Great American Backyard Campout and encourages families to get back to nature, even if it is just pitching a tent in their own backyard. The Summertime Strategy for today is to inventory your camping supplies. Check the status of your tent or camper. Locate your sleeping bags. And round up as much camping gear as your comfort level demands.

ListPlanIt’s Camping List* is a great way to get started. Find the things you need from the list and check them off.

Halfway to Christmas Today is exactly 6 months to Christmas! While that may sound like a long time from now, it will be here before you know it. Can you believe that it has already been 6 months since last Christmas? Time flies when you’re having fun!

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to plant a seed for the holiday season and to do what you can now before the rush of the holiday season is here. Examine your budget. Take a family photo for your holiday cards while you are tanned and on vacation. Keep an eye out for sales on things you think might make great presents or stocking stuffers.

Fire Up the Grill With Father’s Day fast approaching, you may be wondering what to cook. Give Dad the night off from the grill, reach for the utensils, and cook up some delicious food in the outdoors.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to consider your Father’s Day menu. Give the same old burgers a rest and try something new. Ask Dad what his favorites are. Just about anything can be grilled today. The sky’s the limit. Make sure the grill has plenty of propane or charcoal and is ready to be fired up on Sunday. If you’re not the primary griller in the family, take some time now to get some pointers.

Summer Holiday Approaching! Canada’s big summer holiday is just a few days away, while America’s Independence Day is three days after that. Both holidays mean cookouts, family and friends, and fun in the sun.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to start thinking about your role in this holiday. Are you attending any celebratory events? Will you be hosting a get-together? Will you be celebrating at someone else’s house? What is your contribution to the meal? Do you have all of the supplies you need to celebrate properly (fireworks? picnic food and drinks? ice/rock salt for the ice cream maker?)? Summer Holiday Menu So you’ve got a plan for the upcoming summer holiday. It’s time to consider the menu. Of course, your menu will depend on where you will be celebrating, if you will be preparing food at home or somewhere else, and possibly, what is the safest way for your food to “travel”.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to round up your favorite summer recipes and create your menu for the big day. Include all dishes, drinks, and desserts. Next, list all of the ingredients you need in order to make your menu a success. By keeping track of what you prepare and how that recipe was received, you’ll be able to make each holiday in the future that much easier.

Holiday Grocery & Supply Shopping You’ve considered the supplies you need for the upcoming summer holiday (check!). You’ve got your menu (check!). You’ve listed the ingredients necessary (check!). Now it is time to shop from your list before the shelves are empty.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to build in some time in your day to hit the grocery store, discount store, and/or fireworks stand for your summer holiday needs. The closer it gets to the holiday, the greater your chances of having to run around town in order to search for items that are quickly disappearing from stores. Consider breakfast, lunch, dinner, picnic possibilities, cookout constituents (propane, charcoal, matches, etc.), and outdoor obligations (bug spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, umbrella, etc.).

What’s on your list? Visit the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page and tell us. Maybe you’ll find something you’ve been forgetting.

Prepare Now for Summer Emergencies In the midst of holiday fun, it is especially important to be ready for emergencies. Not only are there safety concerns that go along with fireworks and bodies of water, but warm weather also brings the season for natural disasters. Whether you live in a place that experiences a high chance for hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires, or earthquakes, the more prepared you are the less anxiety you feel when disaster strikes.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to consider your family’s safety concerns. Factor in your family’s level of activity during the summer and your area’s weather and climate challenges. Use ListPlanIt’s Emergency Evacuation Inventory* as a starting place to create a list of items that is easily found at a moment’s notice and quick to grab in the event of an emergency.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to concentrate on making sure that everyone in your family is getting out for some daily exercise. Life’s a Beach Is there anything that says summertime more than the beach? By now, you’ve probably stocked up on sunscreen, found a bathing suit that fits, and dug out all of your beach toys and equipment. It is time to put them all to good use.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is pack up your suits and towels, sandwiches and lemonade, chairs and a book, and find some water. If you live near a lake or the ocean, then hit the beach. If cement and chlorine are more your thing, then round up the family and get settled before it gets too crowded. Enjoy the day. Don’t forget to protect skin from too much exposure

Travel Fun Anytime you plan to lock yourself into a small space with children for hours at a time, you run the risk of meltdowns and breakdowns from children and adults alike. It is best to spend some time before your departure date thinking about ways to keep everyone engaged and entertained.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to begin to collect ideas and items that will be useful to your family’s comfort and attention span while traveling, whether by train, plane, or automobile. Collect new books from the library just before you leave. Don’t forget some audiobooks. These are a great way to pass time in the car. Go to the dollar store and pick up notebooks, coloring/activity books, markers, crayons, and any other diversions that might look helpful. Stash away some portable games or toys, such as cards or paper dolls. Some effort before your trip can really save your sanity while traveling.

A Full House The summer is a time when many people can expect company at some point. Family from far away and old-time friends may want to see you and the sights of your area. This can be a wonderful chance to catch up and enjoy your company, but it can also be a busy time. There may be some sprucing, shuffling, and scrambling that occur in the final days before your company arrives.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to create a Preparing for Overnight Guests* list of all the things that you would like to do before your guests arrive. Cleaning windows does not have to wait until the last minute, so try to do that as early as you can. Whereas, things like changing the bed sheets (if your guests are sleeping in a normally-occupied room) should be a last-minute task.

Reunited, and It Feels So Good Reunions are a great chance to see family and friends that you haven’t seen in a while. There is something distinctly human about the desire to stay connected with people even after you’ve lost day-to-day contact. Reunions are a great opportunity to catch up. The Summertime Strategy for today is to prepare yourself, body and soul, for any upcoming reunions you might have this summer. It is fun to see how people have changed over the years, but that means they’ll see the changes you’ve been through as well. Don’t let it worry you, though. Pick Your Own One of my favorite things about summer is picking my own delicious fruits and vegetables. I take my children to pick strawberries in June, raspberries in early July, blueberries in late July, blackberries in August, and apples and pumpkins in September. We always pick as much as we can and then we have a week of pies, cobblers, crisps, pancakes, muffins, sauces, jams, and anything else that we can think of with that particular fruit. Before it gets too ripe, I wash the fruit, spread them out on cookie sheets, freeze them for an hour, and then pour them into a freezable container. Then you can scoop out what you need to throw on some oatmeal or make smoothies.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to find a place where you can pick your own fruit or vegetables. Make it a family affair. Many children grown up not knowing where their food really comes from (the dirt!). It’s a fun activity that has some pretty tasty benefits.

What pick-your-own fruits and vegetables are available in your area? Tell us at the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page.

Summertime Food Summertime food brings certain things to mind: fresh, colorful, flavorful, and light. You may find that with the higher temperatures outside, you are loathe to raise the temperatures inside with a hot oven. Dishes that can be prepared outdoors, on the stovetop, or in the crockpot are the way to go in the summertime. Today’s Summertime Strategy is to create an inventory of twenty-one of your family’s go-to summertime meals. These are your tried-and-true family favorites. Keep this list handy (tape it to the inside of a cabinet or hang it on the refrigerator or put it in the front of your Recipes binder). You’ll be amazed at how much less stressful dinnertime can be when you have an easy list of seasonal meals. Help yourself to ListPlanIt’s My 21 Meals* to list your favorites. Make a Local Grocery List Food tastes best when it is fresh. Food is freshest when it is eaten closest to the time that it is picked or prepared. Food that makes its way halfway around the world before it winds up in your local grocery store is neither fresh nor flavorful.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to consider what grows near you. Do you have a local produce stand nearby? What are the days/hours of the farmer’s market in your area? Do you have any local meat/dairy producers?

Community Supported Agriculture Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a concept that has grown throughout the past years. It is basically a person or family who is dedicated to growing food and sharing it with members of the community. A consumer would buy a share of the food ahead of time and then would get a portion of the bounty as it comes available. It cuts out the middleman (the grocery store or market) and provides shareholders with ultra-fresh food, straight from the farm. The CSA that our family has a share in has a pick-up every Tuesday (or Friday). We get a specified weight of whatever is in season that week, including new and old favorites.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to research CSAs in your area. Some of them are only equipped to sell from the farm, but others deliver to farmer’s markets and places that may have more convenient pickups. Many CSAs also have meat shares, holiday shares, and winter shares, as well.

Like a Duck to Water One of the best ways to cool off in the summertime is to submerge yourself in water. There are so many ways to get wet and it is fun to try as many of these ways as possible during the summer months, but particularly in the hottest month, July.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to commit to getting wet today. Start out simple and put on the sprinkler in the yard. No need to go far or have to worry about packing a change of clothes. Consider a water gun or water balloon war for an extra challenge. There is always the pool or the beach. A waterpark may be more expensive, but it provides a full day of wet and wild fun. Outdoor Entertaining Hosting a summer get-together at your house can be a daunting experience. There are so many details to prepare that you might decide it is not worth it. However, if you choose to host a gathering of friends, you’ll have so much fun that you’ll probably wonder why you don’t do it more often. The Summertime Strategy for today is to take the stress out of entertaining by creating a well-developed plan. It doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated for people to enjoy one another’s company, especially in the summertime. You don’t even have to prepare everything yourself. If you are willing to host the gathering, there will be plenty of friends who would be happy to contribute. Make it a potluck. Create stations to keep the young and the not-so-young busy and put a friend in charge of each one.

Pull Off the Perfect Potluck Entertaining in the summertime doesn’t have to mean that all of the responsibility for food and serving requirements are on you. You can host a party, get together, or a night in without the obligation of providing all of the necessary food and fun yourself.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to choose a date and a time for family, friend, or neighborhood potluck. Pick a theme and assign dishes to each guest, or be casual and allow guests to bring whatever suits them. Potlucks usually provide a great variety of flavors and spread around the responsibility for the food. Expand your potluck idea to servingware, drinks, and games, and you have an instant party! Summer Salads Now that you have all of that delicious local, inseason food, it is time to start putting it to good use. What better meal to have in the summertime than a crunchy, cool salad? There are so many ways to prepare them and almost anything can go into them. You are only limited by your imagination.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to consider what’s available and to build a customized salad. My elder daughter likes salad with garlic and coated with olive oil. My son likes salad with black olives and feta. My younger daughter likes any salad that contains potatoes. We rotate everyone’s preferences and then get a balanced variety of veggies and proteins. Host a Block Party Neighbors are like family. You don’t often choose to whom you live next door, but the people who live around you are your community. You’ll see each other’s best and worst. You’ll coo at new babies and cry for lost pets. Holding a block party to celebrate the bonds of proximity is a great way to get to know each other better.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to step up the summer entertaining a notch and get the whole neighborhood involved. This will require a lot more planning and delegation. A committee of committed friends and neighbors should be the first step. Check with local ordinances to find out if you need a permit. You’ll want to consider food, drinks, entertainment, invitations, and clean up.

Catch a Blockbuster Summer plays host to some of the biggest movies of the year. These are not usually the Oscarnominated films, but the big, loud, and fast-paced adventures. They are a lot of fun. Don’t let summer pass you by without taking the chance to see at least one. When it is hot outside, it is nice and cool in the cinema.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to check your local listings. A matinee would save you some money, but springing for a babysitter and going out in the evening makes it more of a special occasion. Of course, you can always stay home and introduce your children to a classic blockbuster. What will you see?

Summer Skin Care Summer can be hard on skin. Wind and too much exposure to the sun are the main culprits, but chemicals from chlorine can also do their part. Vitamin D is created in our skin when exposed to the sun, but too much exposure can be damaging. The Strategy for Summertime today is to be especially mindful of our skin. Doing what we can to maintain our own and the delicate skin of our children is important. Service to your Community The summertime is a great opportunity to relax and enjoy life. The days are longer, the weather allows for soaking up the sun, and commitments of time are less frequent. However, while children are home and the schedule is a little lighter, it can also be a time of sharing and of demonstrating a commitment to the community.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to research ways to involve your family in caring for something other than your own immediate needs. Look for ways to ingrain kindness, selflessness, and charity. Whether it is volunteering at the humane society, picking up trash in your neighborhood, or purchasing and donating cans to your local food shelter, demonstrating a commitment to the greater good is an important lesson for everyone.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to host your own Olympic competitions. Invite family members and neighbors to join in. Encourage children and adults alike to participate and to have some fun! Offer prizes to the contestants such as a Popsicle, ice cream cone, or dip in the pool. Cool everyone off with some races through the sprinklers.

Old-Fashioned Summertime Just the word “summertime” conjures memories of my childhood. It makes me think about the simple pleasures in life, like when we were kids. Hours stretched luxuriously out in front of us. We created fun from whatever was around.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to go back to your roots. Show your kids what it was like to be young when you were a kid. Blow bubbles. Play hopscotch. Run through the sprinkler. Play tag. Whittle sticks. Play foursquare. Walk to the market for a treat. Make a daisy chain. Have a water balloon fight. Make a mud pie. Strap on some rollerskates.

What’s one of your favorite memories of summertime as a child? Tell us at the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page.

Summertime Check-In We are nearly two-thirds through our summer journey. Since it is the end of July, and because school is around the corner, it is time to analyze. How do you feel the summer has gone so far? Have you planned and accomplished more than you thought you could?

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to take another look at your summer to do list and decide if you are on track. Cross off the things that you’ve accomplished and make a realistic plan for doing the things that are still on the list. There’s also no shame in starting next summer’s to do list and adding a few unfinished items from this summer to next summer.

List of Things to Do before the End of Summer How is the summer going for you so far? Check in and let us know at the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page.

Date Night Summertime means walks on the beach, outdoor dining, lighter and more shapely clothing choices, and steamy nights. These are the perfect ingredients for a much needed date night with your love.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to find a babysitter and whisk away your love for a night on the town. Whether you spend a little or a lot, a night out with your spouse or partner is an important time to reconnect and have a little fun. Do you remember fun? Do you remember when you used to be fun? Think back to before all of your responsibilities were heaped upon you one at a time. Shake off those responsibilities just for the night and rekindle the flame of your love and of the old you.

Go Letterboxing If you’ve never heard of letterboxing, then let me introduce you to one of the best, low-tech family adventures you can do. Letterboxing with your family only needs a computer to find the clues, a journal or log, a stamp, an inkpad, and a writing implement. It is a treasure hunt and a memorymaker all wrapped up in one.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to get on your computer and head for one of the two letterboxing websites: Letterboxing.org or Atlasquest.com. You’ll find supply lists, tutorials, and clues to letterboxes hidden all over the world. Take your letterboxing items with you when you go on vacation to discover a hidden gem of a place while you are traveling. It is even amazing what you can learn about your local area. Get started with this Letterboxing Checklist*.

Summer Reading When I think of summer, reading outdoors on the beach or poolside always comes to mind. Now there are more options for getting through your favorite books: traditional books, e-readers, and audiobooks. Of course, finding time to read may be the hardest challenge for busy parents.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to make a conscious effort to set aside a time and a place to read, not only for yourself but also for your children. It is a fact that children lose up to 2 months of reading achievement over the summertime. My family’s practice since my children began to learn to read, is that they must read to themselves everyday during breaks for a specified amount of time (usually 45 minutes to an hour) after lunch. I usually join them and read from my current reading selection.

Getting Back to School The month of August has begun and while there may not be any federally-recognized holidays this month, there is sure to be a lot of planning as we prepare for the beginning of school. There’s an energy that comes with the start of school. Children are ready to see their friends again, meet their teachers, and get back to work. Parents are ready to get a breather, as well. The transition to school will go a lot smoother if you and your child(ren) prepare yourselves mentally and physically for the new school year.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to consider ways to make those first days of school run as smoothly as possible. You may want to evaluate bedtimes, personal care habits, and breakfast needs.

It is effective for summer hydration as it is composed of 92% water. Watermelon is packed with nutrition, including plenty of vitamin c, beta-carotene, and lycopene.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to fit watermelon into your day. There are many ways to enjoy it: cut it up and eat it fresh as a snack or for part of your meal, add it to lemonade, freeze it to create a kind of sorbet, etc.

From today through August 21, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch the excitement as young men and women compete to see which athlete will win, which country will bring home the most medals, and which world records will be broken. Outfitting for School By now, summer clothes have been put through the ringer and may not be fit for the start of school. Depending on where you live, it may not be too long before short sleeves and shorts turns into a need for sweaters and jeans. If your school requires that uniforms be worn, it is possible that your child will not fit in last year’s uniform. Today’s Summertime Strategy is to inventory your child’s clothing for the start of school. Decide how many shirts, pants, socks, and shoes are necessary for a proper, ageappropriate wardrobe and work toward that number. Get your child’s current size for both clothing and shoes. You may need to do some shopping with your child to make sure of the style and fit. A return means another trip to the store at this busy time of year.

To inventory your child’s clothing needs, use ListPlanIt’s Clothing Inventory* to evaluate what they have and what still needs to be purchased for the new season.

Whether near or far apart, your sister is likely your best friend and the person to whom you could tell anything. She understands about your mom’s forgetfulness and your dad’s jokes.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to celebrate your sister. Give her a call or take her out for lunch. Reminisce about your childhood together. Remind each other of the obstacles that you’ve overcome with one another’s help.

However, if you choose not to partake in the school’s hot lunch program and prefer, instead, to send your child with a lunch from home, you will need a variety of lunch ideas and a well-stocked supply of ingredients to include in the lunch bag.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to develop an inventory of lunches that can be easily prepared by a parent or, even better, by the child. Create a chart or use ListPlanIt’s School Lunch Planner* to list options for a main course, a side, a fruit/vegetable, a drink, and even a dessert.

Summer Scrapbook Hopefully, this summer you were able to work in plenty of opportunities to sleep a little later, relax by the pool, and read a book or two. However, equally as important are your adventures and activities. Don’t let your summer memories fade with the summer.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to decide on a way to document your summer. Make it a family project or encourage members of your family to create their own journal or scrapbook. Record memories. Add photos. Paste in tickets to theme parks. Include the items that say something about the kind of summer you experienced.

Organize, Price, Advertise So, you’ve decided to have a yard sale. Great choice! You can get rid of your junk and possibly make a few bucks in return. It’s a win-win. However, planning for a garage sale takes quite a bit of work. You have already done step one: purge your home of unused items. Now it is on to finalize preparations.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to organize what you’ve gathered, price them fairly, and advertise your sale. Find a neighbor or two who would be willing to have a yard sale on the same day to help attract customers. You can pay money to put an ad in the newspaper, but don’t forget about announcing your yard sale on Craigslist.org. It is widely used and free to post! Have your family get involved by selling lemonade or coffee to your customers. You may be sitting in the hot sun, so don’t forget to have water for the workers at the ready. Race Day Running races have become a popular fundraising and awareness-building activity. You’ll find everything from 5K (3.1 miles) races to marathons (just over 26 miles). Depending on your level of fitness and skill, local races are a great way to exercise your competitive spirit and find camaraderie with others in your area.

The Strategy for Summertime today is to check out your local newspaper or visit the website Active.com for a listing of races in your area. Many races even have children’s fun runs at the beginning. Even if you don’t want to run, see if walkers can participate. Or make a sign and head down to a race and cheer on the runners. Maybe you’ll see someone in the crowd that you know. Take advantage of the energy and vibrancy of a race for a good cause.

Bicycle Built for Two If you haven’t been on a bicycle lately, then summertime is your chance to renew your acquaintance. A bicycle is the smartest mode of transportation available. It is eco-friendly, it is inexpensive, it burns calories, and it is much faster than walking.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to find a bike and take a joy ride. Remind yourself of that childish sense of freedom when you hop on a bike and ride down the road. Technology has complicated a lot of things in life, but a bicycle is still a simple pleasure. Get your family to ride along on a trail or in the neighborhood.

The library is

such an incredible community resource. Consider the number of things that you can get from the library: books, magazines, CDs, books on CD, videos, and even digital books. And they allow you to borrow these things for free!

The Strategy for Summertime today is to pack up the family for a trip to the local library. You’ll be amazed at the offerings. From storytime to tax preparation assistance, from computer usage to free wi-fi for your own devices, and from new best sellers to old classics, you’ll find whatever you need to expand your horizons at the library. Stargazing The summer night sky is perfection, especially if you can get out of the city to enjoy it. There are stars, constellations, and planets to locate. A warm, summer evening is the best ingredient to a night of family togetherness.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to spread out a blanket in the grass and lay down on your backs for the best view. Do a little research before hand and make it a constellation scavenger hunt. See how many stars, constellations, and planets you can find. Discover your own constellations in the stars. Don’t forget the bug spray!

A Summer Home As a resident of Maine, I have seen my share of summer homes. Because of our most-excellent summers, many people want a summer home here along our gorgeous coastline or on one of our pristine lakes. However, for most of us, we may never have our own summer home, but we can provide an opportunity for our children to create a summer retreat that will give hours of enjoyment.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to build a sheet tent or a hula hoop hut on the lawn, a fairy house in the woods, or a sunflower house in your garden.

Don’t forget blanket forts

and treehouses and teepees and bean forts and any other type of backyard shelter that allows kids to let their imaginations roam. Once constructed, haul out blankets and pillows for padding, books and paper for reading and writing, and clear off your schedule for a couple of hours of relaxation.

Catch an Outdoor Concert From Summer Breeze to the Summer Wind, the soundtrack of summertime is carefree. Whether it is a local band playing in the park or a favorite singer or band performing in the open air, an outdoor concert in the summertime is a worthwhile experience. There’s something exciting about a crowd of people, the smell of a variety of food, and loud music pumping through the environment.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to check your local newspaper or websites for an outdoor happening. Find out if it is kidfriendly or if you are going to need a babysitter. Get ready for some fun in the sun. Be sure to bring supplies to keep you safe: sunscreen (if it is in the daytime), a hat, a picnic or money for food, and plenty of water.

Can It! After a summer of fresh fruits and vegetables, it is tough to say goodbye to delicious produce. It is possible, however, to continue to enjoy the summer’s bounty by setting a day aside to can your surplus. Whether you’ve had a successful garden or a share at a local CSA, you may have more fruits and/or vegetables than you can consume. Canning is a great way to make them last.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to gather the supplies you need for canning, set aside the time that you need, and get started. National Can-It Forward Day, hosted by Canning Across America has plenty of events and information on canning.

Summer To Dos in Review It is hard to believe that the unofficial end of summer (Labor Day) is almost here. The time has come to evaluate your end-of-summer priorities and to make a plan of action to accomplish what must be done.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to take out your Summer To Do List and review it one last time. Extra-Curricular Involvement With the start of school comes the start of many extra-curricular activities. Children have opportunities to enrich their lives with sports, music lessons, educational clubs, and much more. While these activities are fun and of value to the child, they can overwhelm a family if there is more than one child or too many choices.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to organize your child(ren)’s extra-curricular activity calendars and needs. Have you already received a schedule? Take a moment to plug practice and game dates/times into your calendar or planner. Have a list of needs that you have to buy? Purchase uniforms, equipment, lesson books, and anything else that is necessary to success in the activity

Visit a Historic Site or Museum One of my favorite things to do during the summer is to find a new place where I can soak up the history of the local people and culture. Kick the kids’ brains into gear by giving them an educational experience before school gets really started. Today’s Strategy for Summertime is to do some quick research on a place of interest in your area.

No matter where you live, you

likely have a historic home, site, or museum within half an hour’s drive. If you live in the U.S., here is a place where you can find historic places of all kinds and in most states. Don’t forget your camera (and your letterboxing supplies)!

Scrub-a-Dub Multi-task what’s left of the summer heat by cooling off with the hose while giving your car a good bath. This is a cleaning activity that the whole family can participate in and enjoy. Today’s Summertime Strategy is to put on some old clothes or, if you live in a place with a modest amount of privacy, a bathing suit and head outside with a bucket, some soap suitable for washing cars, a sponge (or two), and a chamois or some old towels. Outside, all you need is a hose that will reach the car and a nozzle for spraying water. Turn up some tunes and have some fun while you make your car(s) shine!

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to recharge your batteries for the season ahead with a little pampering. Ask your girlfriends to lunch, set aside a few hours to do nothing but read, go see a movie (or a double feature), head to the salon, do something that makes you feel great.

Kidpreneur Kids often want that little bit of independence that comes through earning their own money. While child labor laws prevent children from going out and getting a job until they are at least teenagers, there are still plenty of ways that a kid can start to earn a few bucks now.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to sit down with your child and brainstorm ways that they can earn some spending money by themselves. Calculate the cost of materials and then price the product or service based on supplies needed and the time it takes to provide it. Here are a few ideas: the classic lemonade stand, pet-walking, lawn-mowing, babysitting (if the child is at least 12), a paper route, carwashing, etc.

Preserve Summer Backyard and wild flowers add a color and vibrancy in the summertime that is lacking in the late autumn and winter.

Hold on to the beauty of

The Summertime Strategy for today is to gather some of your favorite flowers from the garden and try your hand at creating a family pressing station. You’ll find instructions from BHG.com for making your own here. Or tie a bundle of flowers together at the stems and hang upside down in a dry spot for a couple of weeks. Build a Bonfire As the summer wanes, so might the evening temperatures be steadily descending. You may find the need to start wearing a jacket while out in the yard. If you are loathe to add layers yet, a great way to fight the coming chill is to build a fire in a firepit or chimney and enjoy the summer while you still can.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to stock up on your bonfire supplies (logs, matches, graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows) and gather around the fire. Whether or not you roast marshmallows or play the guitar or have friends over, a fire is the perfect way to end a summer day

Pack Up Summer Summer fun is almost done. While there may still be a few warm days ahead, there are likely quite a few summer activities that can now be considered finished. With school already in session or about to begin next week, children have little time for their summer toys.

The Strategy for Summertime is to decide what items can be put away now and what may need to be left out for a few more weeks. The sooner that some of the summer stuff is cleared away, the sooner you’ll be ready to face the upcoming season.

Labor Day Weekend Planning Labor Day weekend is here. As of today, there is only a few days left of summer before the busyness of school truly kicks in. You may want to plan something extra-special for Labor Day weekend, as it will be summer’s final hurrah.

Today’s Summertime Strategy is to create a plan for the holiday weekend. Maybe you want to take a final camping trip. Maybe you want to get away. Maybe you plan to spend the weekend at the lake or the beach with friends. Is there a parade or fair this weekend? Discuss with your family and decide what steps you must take today to make this the perfect end-of-summer weekend.

List of Fun Ideas for Labor Day Weekend Visit the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page and let us know what plans you’ve made this Labor Day.

Saturday, September 3

See you at the Fair At this time of year, many towns and regions host an agricultural fair, state fair, or festival. These are a fun way to get out with the family and connect with the community. You may find anything from livestock to art contests, from tractor pulls to beauty pageants, live entertainment to carnival rides. The food is usually deep friend and comes on a stick, but it’s tasty.

The Summertime Strategy for today is to check your local listings to find out where the best place to find a fair would be this weekend or in the coming weeks. Fairs can be pretty costly so it is a good idea to start saving up some of your entertainment money for your weekend at the fair.

Visit the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page and tell us about your favorite local fair.

End of Summer Sap This journey through the 100 days of summertime is nearly through. Since summer is one of my favorite seasons of the year, I hate to see it go. However, another of my favorite seasons is upon us. Be sure to catch the countdown of 100 days to Christmas, beginning on September 16. The Strategy for Summertime today is to mourn the passing of another great summer. Time marches on. Take heart, though. We will be starting next year’s 100 Days of Summertime before you know it. Did you have a great summer? Are you sad to see summer end? Or are you all too ready to get past summer and on to fall? Visit the 100 Days of Summertime Facebook page and let us know.

Happy Labor Day What a summer! We’ve accomplished so much. Thank you all for being a part of the community here at 100 Days of Summertime. My hope is that you will be back next May, ready to take on another summer. Today’s final Summertime Strategy is to enjoy your day off from work or from school. Pat yourself on the back for all that you have done over the summer. To my family and friends from my hometown of Hoisington, Kansas, I wish you a splendid Labor Day parade and celebration. To my friends from around the United States and the world, Happy Labor Day! Have a wonderful fall!!
