ABSTRACT In this study, assessment methodology for biomass sustainability is introduced. An expert the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) working group on “Sustainability Assessment of Biomass Utilisation in East Asia” developed guidelines for sustainable utilisation of biomass for energy in East Asia. Due to test and adjust the guidelines, the pilot scale studies were selected for assessment of sustainability of biomass energy development in the region. Some major biomass feed stocks used for energy in the East Asian region include sugarcane and cassava for ethanol production in Thailand and Indonesia, coconut oil for biodiesel production in the Philippines and non-edible tree oils such as Jatropha seed oil, in India and Indonesia. The choice of feed stock depends on its availability and cost for production of biofuels. Primary data and information were collected through field surveys of concerned stakeholders in each country. The results of sustainability assessment of biofuel production were expressed in terms of economic, environmental and social impacts, which are given in the end of study.
