GREETINGS

CREATING AWARENESS. Dear colleagues from the industry, I cannot welcome you to ITB Berlin 2017 without putting emphasis on the very much appreciated fact that 2017 was announced by the UNWTO as International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development! It supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a tourism context. These 17 new ambitious goals are set to change the mindset of all of us, we need cooperative efforts everywhere in the world, in all destinations and all sectors. The world today unfortunately is in a new state of disruption, war hasn’t ceased and refugees are still suffering – human rights are still violated in many ways. We are facing many challenges and - more than ever, political developments remind us that democracy and freedom are not to be taken for granted. ITB will do its part to support responsibility and sustainability. Even though megatrends like digitalization and etravel are in the center of interest of our Convention (justifiably, as there is huge potential - also with regard to further establishing sustainable travel..) we will once again also discuss a wide range of issues, linked to responsible tourism and the SDGs. In cooperation with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) a whole day will be dedicated to The Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Many sessions of the ITB Convention and on the stages of hall 4.1 pick-up current topics like safety, sustainable food, accessibility, child protection and “over-tourism”. The ITB CSR Day at the ITB Convention will also highlight sustainable luxury, eco-friendly destination marketing and discuss the carbon footprint of cruises. Visitors who are not yet convinced about the necessity of fighting climate change are also addressed. ITB Berlin tries to help create awareness; alternative facts shall not be respected. One focus this year in hall 4.1 will be on star gazing, sending us to dream about starry nights but also providing us with information on light pollution. Botswana, ITB’s Partner Country in 2017, an extremely beautiful and pristine destination, surely provides one of the most beautiful night skies in the world. The country is committed to environmental and wildlife protection and is really a guide model in saving the endangered rhinos. With the 3rd joint ITB-National Geographic World Legacy Awards which put into spotlight outstanding visionaries of sustainable tourism in five categories ITB strongly demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development. As we do by supporting the well-established and renown ToDo! Awards with emphasis on community participation and the TOURA D’Or Awards, honoring film productions dedicated to social engagement. The 2nd Celebrating Her Awards are also set to make a statement for gender equality and women in the tourism industry. My call for 2017 is once again to get involved: You can stargaze and dream for a better future – but stay awake, nip things in the bud. Let’s roll up our sleeves to help implement the Sustainable Developments Goals! Get into a dynamic mood on ITB Friday at 6 p.m. in hall 4.1 at our 9th Annual Responsible Tourism Networking Event! Yours cordially,

GREETINGS

Rika Jean-François Commissioner ITB Corporate Social Responsibility

1. KEYNOTE ADDRESS Stars forever! – How they can teach us sustainability

• Dr. Andreas Hänel, Astronomer and Director, Planetarium in the Museum am Schölerberg, Osnabrück; Leader, Working Group Dark-Sky; Association of Star Friends; Commission Light Pollution, Astronomical Society; Germany Civilisation on our planet Earth exists since several thousand years, but our star sun was already shining for 4,500 million years. But nowadays the stars are veiled by wasted artificial light at most places and we can see the splendour of the night sky only in remote areas. By this we could recognize that responsible use of artificial light is sustainable because it saves energy, protects the night for many animals − including for us human beings.

2. KEYNOTE ADDRESS The value of the dark

• Harald Bardenhagen, Astronomer and Director, Astronomy Workshop Stars without Limits (“Sterne ohne Grenze”); Primary Dark-Sky Consultant, National Park Eifel and the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA); Germany Darkness – a seldom experience in the modern world. Darkness is not just the absence of light – it is a fundamental cornerstone for the development of life on planet Earth and a requirement to survive for most every species on our planet: it is essential for human health, needed for biodiversity and prerequisite for the nature experience of stargazing. Islands of Darkness are almost the same important like Islands of Tranquility – and a find for people looking for a specific touristic destination with an exceptional nature experience. 11.15 – 11.45 MESSEL PIT UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE – A star in the sky of life on planet Earth • Dr. Marie Luise Frey, Managing Director, Messel Pit UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site; Germany 11.45 – 12.15 THE MANY FACETS OF ASTRO-TOURISM – From cultural to responsible natural tourism

With representatives from civil society and outbound tour operators, we want to discuss and explore how participation of local people could be strengthened. How can multi-stakeholder dialogues be organized? Which challenges do different stakeholder groups face?

You will learn how to boost sales, prolong the tourism season and increase your guests’ satisfaction simply by marketing your sustainability efforts better. We will work together to learn how you can better market and communicate what makes you different, by focusing on how it makes your customer’s experience more complete. We will brainstorm realistic ideas you can adapt, relevant to the decisions your customers need to take that will help reassure them you are the right company for their needs. Without idealism, jargon and save the planet messages. We will also teach you how to tweak products into life-changing experiences that will leave your competitors far behind. Summergarden (Fairground) 16.00 – 16.30 STARGAZING AT DAYTIME – SOLAR OBSERVATION WITH THE AMAZING TANDEM-TELESCOPE AND SUPERGIANT-BINOCULAR • Harald Bardenhagen, Astronomer and Director, Astronomy Workshop Stars without Borders; Primary Dark-Sky Consultant, National Park Eifel and the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA); Germany Stargazing normally requires darkness but if you want to observe the nearest star of the 200 billion ones of our Milky Way, you have to look at the Sun at daytime. In a distance of about 150 million kilometers, the light needs about 8 ½ minutes to travel the distance Sun-Earth with a surprising effect – we see the Sun not in real time, but 8 ½ minutes later. No light pollution can hinder the sight of the brilliant daytime star; its light creates an illuminance of more than 100.000 lx (lux). Never try to observe the Sun through a telescope or binocular without proper installed certified solar filters. Otherwise, the intensity and the heat of the light of the Sun will immediately damage your eyesight - forever! ..But don’t worry about looking though the amazing Tandem-Telescope and Supergiant-Binocular – the instruments are equipped with certified solar filters. About the Astronomer Harald Bardenhagen Harald Bardenhagen offers astronomical nature experiences for the public at large with his Astronomy Workshop Stars without Borders (“Astronomie-Werkstatt Sterne ohne Grenzen”). He carries on an observatory at the International Place Vogelsang amidst the Eifel National Park, which is the first International Dark Sky Park in Germany. As managing director of the association Light and Nature (“Licht und Natur e.V.”), he works on the reduction of light pollution at a supraregional level.

In 2017 we will enjoy performances from ITB’s Partner Country Botswana as weil as from several other destinations. Official Partner Country ITB Berlin 2017

CSR PROGRAM EVERY DAY @ ITB: PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITIONS 1. “Millions on the move – Birds connect the Arctic, Wadden Sea and Africa” Hall 4.1, stand no. 228 / UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea (comprises the Dutch, German and Danish coast and its islands) “Conservation beyond Borders”: Explore and celebrate the beauty and abundance of the East Atlantic Flyway, viewed through a range of lenses: wildlife habitat, cultural framework, recreational commons and conservation story. 2. „The Mongolian Wildlife World“ Hall 4.1, stand no. 240 / Active & Adventure Tours Mongolia Mongolia possesses a variety of natural zones, including high mountains, forested areas, rivers and lakes, vast grasslands and deserts with massive sand dunes. Some 480 species of birds and 141 species of mammals inhabit a territory of 1.65 million square kilometers with little over 3 million people, majority of whom live in the cities. 3. Value of the Night Hall 4.1, stand no. 105a / Star Park and National Park Eifel Astronomers were the first to encounter the brightening of the night sky decades ago. Today, there are fewer and fewer places in Europe where you can observe a night sky brimming with stars. Many people have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes, because the night sky is getting brighter and brighter by the increasing light pollution. This hides the faint stars from our sight. Despite all its benefits: The user of artificial light at night has serious downsides and there are many good reasons to preserve not only the oases of the natural darkness but to avoid light pollution everywhere. The Star Park Eifel is the first “International Dark-Sky Park” of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) in Germany. It is a project of the North Eifel Nature Park in Germany dedicated to promote the nature experience of a starry night sky and to protect the natural nightscapes in the region around the Eifel National Park. VARIOUS EVENTS & ACTIVITIES • Hall 4.1, booth no. 219: Fairaway conducts a contest, asking visitors how much plastic rubbish just one traveler usually consumes during just one trip – guess how many plastic bottles are gathered in the container at the Fairaway booth. Get informed on how to avoid plastic trash! • Hall 26: Meet the new platform for female entrepreneurs „SheTrades – International Trade Center“ in Hall 26 and get informed about new projects of the German Society of Development (GIZ).
