Advanced Placement Physics B Brief Description of Course Advanced Placement Physics B focuses on the relationships of motion and energy. The syllabus utilized for this course has been developed to incorporate the major topics found on the Advanced Placement Exam administered through the College Board. The pace of the course dictates a sound background in algebra is essential. The five major topics discussed in this course are: Newtonian mechanics Fluid mechanics and Thermal Physics Waves and Optics Electricity and Magnetism Atomic and Nuclear Physics This course meets for two periods each day for the entire year. The blocked schedule allows the student the opportunity to not only work through the assigned problem sets but to perform a variety of laboratory activities which require an extended time period. Lecture notes, problem sets with solutions, Vernier laboratory activities, rubrics, and data analysis tools will be distributed to you on CD. The data analysis tools are available and licensed for your home use. It is my expectation that you become familiar with the resources provided to you. Inquiry and laboratory are necessary and valued components of any science course-this is especially true of Advanced Placement Physics. You will be expected to keep a laboratory notebook as well as a portfolio of selected laboratory activities completed according to "formal" guidelines. Laboratory activities designated "Vernier" will be found on your resource CD. Activities designated "Student developed procedure" will be designed by you to meet the guidelines as distributed on your CD. Guidelines for your notebook as well as rubrics for the portfolio will be distributed on your CD. The Advanced Placement Exam is offered in May of the academic year for students who wish to attain college credit in either General Physics (algebra based) or College Physics (calculus based) before entering their post-secondary program. The timing of the exam dictates this course is taught, and completed, at a more rigorous pace than a typical high school course. Students seeking a post-secondary program in engineering, medicine, architecture, physical therapy, physician assistant, as well as other scientific disciplines are strongly encouraged to take Advanced Placement Physics B. For more information please see Mr. Lind (room 634) before registering for the course.
