Tubby the Tuba Tubby the Tuba The tuba is one BIG instrument! The tuba is an 18-foot metal tube. That’s as tall as a giraffe! When the tube is coiled up, it’s about as tall as you.

The Violin This beautiful instrument is sometimes called a “fiddle”. Violins are made of wood and strings.

Peepo the Piccolo The piccolo is the tiniest instrument in the orchestra. Its name means “small” in Italian. A piccolo is only one foot long. It plays the very highest notes.

The Timpani The timpani is sometimes called a “kettle drum”. It’s a big metal drum that sounds like thunder.

“Thunder and Lightning” Polka Johann Strauss, Jr. Can you hear the thunder and lightning in this music?

Which of these instruments makes the thunder sound? — Violin? — Timpani? — Which of these instruments makes you think of lightning? — Cymbals? — Tuba? — Piccolo?

A Note for Parents: We hope that you will use this guide to prepare children for the Symphony Street concerts. Listen to the Symphony Street CD with your child or students before attending the concert. Talk about the different types of sounds you hear as the various instruments play. Select age-appropriate activity sheets from the ones included in this guide to help foster further discussion and interest in the orchestra. We are delighted that your student(s) will have an opportunity to hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at a Symphony Street Concert. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra provides other opportunities for you to share the joy of music with young people. The Sunday afternoon Family Concert series is designed to be an entertaining learning experience for the whole family. Also on Sunday afternoons, you and your child may enjoy concerts performed by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. This talented group of student musicians ranging in age from 13-18 performs three subscription concerts a year. We hope you’ll take advantage of these and other concerts to instill in your child a love of orchestral music – a lifelong gift that your child will treasure.
