How to Hit Musical Targets More Often and Create More Opportunities for Your Music! Dear Passengers, Reading too much into the references in TAXI‟s Industry Listings may be the single biggest reason people miss the target and don‟t get a “forward.” What do I mean by “reading too much into the references?” My observation is that many musicians think the person or company requesting the music is looking for an artist or song that sounds exactly like the references. In most cases, TAXI gives three references and we say something like this in the body of the listing: 1) “Please listen to the following references to get in the general stylistic wheelhouse of what they need.” We might also say something like: 2) “They‟re looking for believable, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that would be found on the same playlists as artists like Steve Earle, Buddy Miller, Robbie Fulks, Robert Earl Keen, etc., etc., etc.” We might even go as far as saying; 3) “They‟re looking for several, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Pop/Rock Instrumentals in the general stylistic wheelhouse of Top-40 acts like (but not limited to) Bastille, Fitz and The Tantrums, Young The Giant, Foster The People, etc., etc., etc. Take a listen to the following song references to get in the broad, general stylistic wheelhouse of what they‟re looking for.”

If you’d like to seriously improve your “forward ratio,” and have many more opportunities for your music, consider this: In example #1, notice that it says, “in the general stylistic wheelhouse of what they need.” General and wheelhouse are the operative words! The company isn‟t looking for material that‟s exactly like the references. In example #2, notice that it says, “…Songs that would be found on the same playlists as artists like Steve Earle, Buddy Miller, Robbie Fulks, Robert Earl Keen, etc., etc., etc.” On the “same playlists,” and “etc., etc., etc.,” indicate that they‟re not looking for music that‟s exactly like those artists – they just need songs that are in that general niche or style. And we include the, “etc., etc., etc.” to further indicate that the company is looking for more than exact matches. The question you could ask yourself is, “If I were on a road trip with a friend who made a playlist and I heard those songs on it, what else might I hear on that list? Do I have a song that would sound “at home” on that list as well?” In example # 3, notice that it says, “Mid-to-Up-Tempo Pop/Rock Instrumentals in the general stylistic wheelhouse of Top-40 acts like (but not limited to) Bastille, Fitz and The Tantrums, Young The Giant, Foster The People, etc., etc., etc. Take a listen to the following song references to get in the broad, general stylistic wheelhouse of what they‟re looking for.” We‟ve given several indications that they‟re not looking for exact matches:    

“general stylistic wheelhouse” “but not limited to” “etc., etc., etc.” “broad, general stylistic wheelhouse”

Once again, the question to ask is, “Would my music sound like it belongs on a list that has those acts or songs on it? But, just because it says “broad,” please don‟t read too much into it and think, “Well, they‟ve all got male vocals and my song does as well!” We don‟t mean that you should be that broad ;-) We work really hard to get as much information from the listing source as we possibly can before we publish what you see. Virtually every listing has at least two people working on the references, and it‟s not unusual we spend at least an hour on just the references before you see the listing!

The Best Thing You Can Do… 1

In the end, the best thing you can do is to listen to the references we give you. You‟ll probably become familiar with songs and artists that you might otherwise not know. I‟ll bet you‟ll also find some artists or songs that you‟re music might be in the “stylistic ballpark” with, and have new opportunities that you‟ve been passing up before because you weren‟t familiar with those artists or songs. The most successful people I know in the music industry seem to have something in common: They‟ve got one heck of a musical “vocabulary.” If you make a habit of listening to all of the references for the listings that catch your attention, you‟ll soon find yourself saying, “Yeah, I‟ve got a song that would work well on a playlist with those,” rather than, “Those examples aren‟t all the same, and I don‟t have anything exactly like any of them!” Click below to see an exceptionally good batch of new Industry Listings, and listen to these references. I can‟t think of anything better to move your career ahead more quickly! Talk to you soon, Michael **************************************************************************************************************** PLEASE NOTE! If you are submitting by mail (ground submissions) and sending in a CD, please enclose a S.A.S.E. (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) if you would like a response. She's sold millions of records, won numerous awards, including multiple Grammys, is extremely well-known around the world, and recognizes a great song when she hears one. We need songs with current, Popinfluenced melodies, rhythms, and chord progressions that can be competitive on Christian radio and possibly have cross-over potential. You'll want to avoid stock sounding melodies for this pitch. The artist is known for her Christian Pop songs with contemporary rhythms and contemplative, uplifting lyrics. Melodies need to be current, unique, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone choruses that lend themselves to powerful vocals and harmonies. Please limit verses to 2 or 3 max, and ABABCB structures are preferable. It‟s highly recommended that you listen to recent hits by the artists mentioned (above), to get a general vibe of tunes that could work for the listing. Lyrics need to be conversational, VISUAL, unique, emotional, inspiring, and present fresh themes that engage listeners on the „heart‟ level. Themes need to be consistent with a Biblical worldview, and also have an impact on popular culture by being relatable to both churchgoers and nonbelievers. You'll want to avoid using clichés and familiar sounding phrases, and opt for unique, conversational lyrics that are packed to the brim with visuals. Overly repetitious, abstract, generalized, predictable lines won't fly with this. Please avoid songs with drinking, cheating, depressing or negative themes, and opt for songs that give listeners an uplifting, memorable experience. She looks for moving songs that connect us to ourselves and each other, and to our faith in a way that conversation doesn't do.” Wow, great info! Couldn‟t have said it better ourselves! Songs should have energy, attitude, confidence, heart, and an honest touch of twang. Melodies need to be catchy, unique, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone choruses that stay in the listener's head. Please limit verses to 2 or 3 max, and ABABCB structures are preferable. Several of his previous releases have featured an acoustic guitar and might be considered Pop/Singer-Songwriter crossover in their style, so know that that‟s an option, other than the straight-up, layered SynthPop often heard on Pop radio . Early Ed Sheehan and the acoustic side of Bruno Mars could be a good place to go for this guy! Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. Check out the examples below to see if you‟ve got some old demos or masters (recorded in the 1930s – 1950s) that would fall into the Vocal Harmony Group category: “I don‟t Want to Set the World on Fire” by The Ink Spots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8LPj_khfgE The Best of The Mills Brothers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92DtLXDi18s “The Great Pretender” by The Platters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwfmbXJEBtY This Publisher is the hot, go-to company for a long list of extremely popular TV shows and big Feature Films when they need music that sounds authentic to a particular time period. This company often averages several placements per week, and many of those are TAXI members who‟ve been signed with this company because they submitted to a listing like this! Dozens of TAXI members have signed buy out, cash-up-front deals with this company. Several have even received checks for $10,000 - $15,000 (or more!) while still keeping their writer‟s share of the publishing and getting performance royalties from their PRO on the back end! Deal sizes and buyout amounts vary depending on the number and quality of the songs singed by the Publisher. They DO NOT want material that was recently recorded and made to sound old. They can only use AUTHENTIC, ORIGINAL, VINTAGE 1930s – 1950s VOCAL HARMONY GROUP RECORDINGS like those mentioned above. This is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to make money with music you might have thought had no hope in today‟s market. If you’ve got old Demos or Masters, then you could very well have what they need! This company knows that old recordings will typically sound less than hi-fidelity by today‟s standards. Not a problem – they‟re looking for authenticity! Even if your recordings were recorded live to mono or stereo tape, or done in an old 4-track, 8-track or 16-track studio, they could still be perfect for this company if they sound reasonably good. They DO NOT want slick, modern, ProTools generated recordings. DO NOT SUBMIT FOR FRIENDS! Your name needs to be on the copyright. Your Songs need to be Original Compositions (no covers), and you need to own/control the copyright and master recordings to submit for this pitch. Dozens of TAXI members have already made great deals and had some killer placements in big TV Shows and Feature Films through this company. If you‟ve got some AUHTENTIC, VINTAGE oldies but goodies that have been collecting dust for decades, you really need to send them in for this opportunity! You‟ll love working with this company – they‟ve made a lot of TAXI members very happy! Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. Please include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PST), on Friday, March 4th, 2016. TAXI #U160304VH
