TAXI INDUSTRY LISTINGS ******************************************* UPDATED 3/15/2016******************************************* TAXI, 5010 N. Parkway Calabasas, Suite 200, Calabasas, CA 91302 Please call 818-222-2464 if you have problems or questions
Music And Shoes: Not All That Different! Dear Passengers, When you ask a shoe salesperson to show you what she has in a size 10 men‟s boot in black, how would you feel if she opened a box and said, “I‟ve got some beautiful white women‟s pumps in a size 7, and everybody who sees them loves them?” I‟m pretty sure your response would be, “But I‟m a guy, and I asked for a black boot in a men‟s size 10, why are you showing me these white women‟s pumps? I don‟t really care that people „love them‟ because they aren‟t what I need.” The music industry is the same: There are music buyers with specific needs and music sellers. The most successful music sellers (songwriters, artists, and composers) are obviously the people who have what the buyers (music publishers, supervisors, and record labels) ask for and need! While artists and creative people in general tend to strongly dislike anything they feel that stifles their creativity or tries to pigeon hole their art, the truth is that the music industry is a business where art meets commerce. The most successful musicians embrace that idea, and they create music that music buyers need. Dumbing It Down Many musicians also resist anything that makes them feel like they‟ve got to dumb their creativity down. They want to show how talented they are, and who can blame them? But, creating an instrumental piece that‟s seven minutes long and has three wildly different movements within it – each of which evokes a completely different emotion – makes it difficult to place in a TV show scene that‟s forty-eight seconds long with just one mood or emotion. Yes, you can make the argument that the music supervisor or editor could carve out a section that‟s forty-eight seconds long, but that takes time and effort. Music supervisors often like to take the path of least resistance because they need to work quickly and efficiently. If the section they could use doesn‟t have a buttoned ending, that will create even more work. They‟d have to edit the ending and add reverb to create a ring out rather than having an abrupt ending. Nothing is Ever Absolute Counter arguments can be made for all of this, but my personal feeling is that giving the customer the “shoe” they asked for is usually better than trying to cram a size ten foot into a size seven shoe – never mind the men‟s V.S. women‟s style issue. I understand that not everybody wants to create music that people need. That‟s an artistic choice that I respect. But, I also know hundreds of musicians who are able to create music they‟re proud of that music buyers want! I don‟t think the two are mutually exclusive, nor does it have to stifle creativity. And who‟s to say that you can‟t do both? Could you create groundbreaking seven-minute songs that push the artistic envelope while also creating two-minute TV cues that are based on a simple motif and have obvious commercial value? Yes! One puts money in your pocket to keep food on the table while you create your grand opus. Food for thought. And if you want to see what music buyers need right now, you can take the guesswork out of it by looking at our updated Industry Listings by clicking the link below. Talk to you soon, Michael **************************************************************************************************************** PLEASE NOTE! If you are submitting by mail (ground submissions) and sending in a CD, please enclose a S.A.S.E. (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) if you would like a response. Christian Listings (continued): CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN SONGS with Male or Female Vocals and tons of Pop crossover potential are needed by a hard-working, Nashville-based Music Publisher for a Multiple Grammy-Winning Artist that‟s currently working on a brand new record. They‟re looking for “super inspiring” Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that could be found on the same playlist as artists like: Steven Curtis Chapman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYEgOh_b-Co Ellie Holcomb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-5axIcYFVA Francesca Battistelli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvBBC7-PSHo Celine Dion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNIPqafd4As Quoting the source: “We need Christian Pop hits for an iconic, Major Female Christian recording star. She's sold millions of records, won numerous awards, including multiple Grammys, is extremely well-known around the world, and recognizes a great song when she hears one. We need songs with current, Popinfluenced melodies, rhythms, and chord progressions that can be competitive on Christian radio and possibly have cross-over potential. You'll want to avoid stock sounding melodies for this pitch. The artist is known for her Christian Pop songs with contemporary rhythms and contemplative, uplifting lyrics. Melodies need to be current, unique, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone choruses that lend themselves to powerful vocals and harmonies. Please limit verses to 2 or 3 max, and ABABCB structures are preferable. It‟s highly recommended that you listen to recent hits by the artists mentioned (above), to get a general vibe of tunes that could work for the listing. Lyrics need to be conversational, VISUAL, unique, emotional, inspiring, and present fresh themes that engage listeners on the „heart‟ level. Themes need to be consistent with a Biblical worldview, and also have an impact on popular culture by being relatable to both churchgoers and nonbelievers. You'll want to avoid using clichés and familiar sounding phrases, and opt for unique, conversational lyrics that are packed to the brim with visuals. Overly repetitious, abstract, generalized, predictable lines won't fly with this. Please avoid songs with drinking, cheating, depressing or negative themes, and opt for songs that give listeners an uplifting, memorable experience. She looks for moving songs that connect us to ourselves and each other, and to our faith in a way that conversation doesn't do.” Wow, great info! Couldn‟t have said it better ourselves! Acoustic demos can work for this pitch, but your recording quality (even

Instrumental Listings (continued): NEW LISTING - CINEMATIC, INDIE ROCK INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a Production Music Library outside of the U.S. who‟s had a lot of success signing TAXI members and getting placements for them. We recently ran this opportunity as TAXI Dispatch Listing # D160212CR, and we received very few submissions. So, in order to knock their socks off with awesome music, we‟re re-running the opportunity to get them more material. If you made a submission to TAXI Dispatch Listing #D160212CR, please send different material this time around. They‟re searching for Instrumental Cues that you‟d hear on playlists that would have a range of acts like Other Lives, Arcade Fire, Band Of Horses, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get in the stylistic wheelhouse of what they‟re looking for: “As I Lay My Head Down” by Other Lives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy13X7n0t7Q “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zdNdjF-htY “Is There A Ghost” by Band of Horses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK716RqoUms Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this pitch. Please submit Cinematic Instrumental Cues with a current Indie-Rock vibe. Your Cues should lend themselves to a deeper emotion than what “typical” reality Cues would have. The overall feel can range from moody, all the way to anthemic, and should have typical Rock band Instrumentation. While the addition of orchestral strings and tastefully used electronic elements isn‟t absolutely necessary, it would be a plus to have them! Build Your Cue around a central melodic theme, while layering instruments in and out as your Cue progresses to add dynamics and keep your Cue from sounding repetitive. Avoid using any MIDI-driven instruments that sound stiff, or unnatural, as well as playing anything overly busy, or frenetic, as that could distract from a scene‟s dialog. All submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Buttoned/Stinger Endings and Easy Edit Points are encouraged for this pitch. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced composers in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for feel, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). This Library offers an EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 split. You‟ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer‟s share. Give them guitar-based Rock Cues with short to no intros that are built around a central melodic theme, while layering instruments in and out to add interest, dynamics, and forward momentum. Please avoid guitar solos or anything that‟s too frenetic, busy, bombastic, so your Cue doesn‟t distract from any dialog/voiceover it might play under. Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Easy Edit Points and Non-Faded/Buttoned/Stinger endings will work best for this pitch. TAXI #Y160327KP CONTEMPORARY POP SONGS with Male Vocals are needed by a Major Record Label for an Award-Winning young artist who‟s working on a brand new record. This young man has already had songs chart in the Top 10 in Billboard and cites Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake as his influences. His A&R team is looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that would appeal to the fans of artists like: Troye Sivan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdXNNveYOfU
16
Shawn Mendes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbfpW0pbvaU Charlie Puth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxuY9FET9Y4 Give them well-crafted songs that are ready for mainstream radio, with a melodically, rhythmically, and lyrically compelling approach. This artist started out as a YouTube sensation, and his audience is largely tweens and teenage girls, so songs with a relationship-based/love themed lyric will always do well for him. Because this is his second record record, he‟s probably also looking to show some maturity as an artist. Songs with a really strong chorus that appeals to an audience that‟s a little more broad than just swooning young girls could get him and his label excited. Your production and recording quality needs to be competitive enough to get them interested in your song, although it‟s likely they‟ll be cutting a new version. Several of his previous releases have featured an acoustic guitar and might be considered Pop/Singer-Songwriter crossover in their style, so know that that‟s an option, other than the straight-up, layered SynthPop often heard on Pop radio . Early Ed Sheehan and the acoustic side of Bruno Mars could be a good place to go for this guy! Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than 11:59PM (PST), on Monday, March 28th, 2016. Your submissions should have super-catchy melodies, great lyrics, and an outstanding vocal performance. Lyric themes should be something that would typically sound appropriate in the Dream Pop genre, and would be considered universal enough that it could work in several types of scenes. Please avoid using specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced bands or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Also, please avoid any material with unauthorized samples of other artists‟ music, sounds, or any other form of media.
