CONGREGATIONAL CARE As a caring body of believers, please remember in your prayers those who have recently been hospitalized or are recuperating at home: Jenn Beck. Our sympathy to Mary Ellen Blaker on the death of her husband, Woody Blaker, May 1. Mr. Blaker was the father of Tracy (Joe) Losch and the grandfather of Joshua, Olivia, Caleb, and Noah. To be added to our prayer list call the Pastoral Care office at 407.423.3441 x1455, or submit an online prayer request at fpco.org/prayerrequest.
ABOUT COMMUNION We believe in an “open table.” We invite every believer who has publicly professed faith in Jesus to join us in this celebration. We believe by the power of the Holy Spirit, that the bread and the cup become for us the living presence of the broken body and shed blood of Jesus. We do not believe it becomes actual flesh and blood, but the spiritually living presence of God through the Holy Spirit. Presbyterian churches do not have altars like other churches may. We have a table, symbolic of the Great Feast of Thanksgiving we will one day enjoy with Jesus and the heavenly host, as illustrated in Matthew 26:29 & Luke 22:16–18. We view the cross of Christ as the final and sufficient altar, on which the ultimate sacrifice was made. Suggestions for Celebrating Communion. Before serving the bread and wine (non-alcoholic grape juice), the pastor will lead the congregation in a time of prayer. During this time, confess your sins to God; ways you have violated His commandments; areas of your life where you are not living by faith; things you do in an attempt to earn His favor. While the bread is being served, meditate on what the death of Jesus means for you; how the sins you confessed were laid upon Him and paid for with His body. Rejoice that you do not suffer God’s judgment because Christ suffered this judgment on your behalf. While the cup is being served, let it wash away your guilt, much the way we are washed spiritually by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus). Take this time to confess specific things that capture your heart more than God (approval of others, success, your family, etc.). Rest in His presence. If you would like to receive a gluten free sacrament this morning, there will be an Elder in the Narthex (lobby of the Sanctuary) to administer it for you.

Traditional Worship I’m sure in some sense, the events of the resurrection of Jesus seemed like a dream. He was alive, and then He was dead, and then He was alive again and walked around, and then His body ascended up into the clouds as people stood and watched! My guess is that some people were thinking, “Did I just see what I think I saw?” This coming Thursday marks exactly forty days since Easter morning. It would have been this week that Jesus returned to heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father. To some people who lived then, it may have seemed like a dream. Yet, with the coming of the Holy Spirit ten days later, reality set in; God had come in power to indwell His people! The opening hymn sings of the glory of the resurrection. The text comes from one of the believers who lived in the 8th century. The return of Christ at the end of the age in the same way may seem like a dream to some, but rest assured, the Lord’s return is no dream! Our God is faithful to the end and He watches over us between now and then! (He Watching Over Israel from the oratorio Elijah) Our worship today encompasses all of these various aspects. The final choral response at the end of the service is entitled Taw Amen. "Taw" is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. -Dr. Dan Sharp

YEAR OF THE BOOK! THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1.
Can you recall a dream you gave up when you were younger? Perhaps it was what you wanted to become or do for a living? Why did you give up on it? Do you regret it?
2. What does God promise to do in this passage? 3. What gifts will God’s Spirit grant to sons, daughters, old men, and young men? Why do you think this is significant? 4. What role does the repentance of God’s people play in Joel’s understanding of the past and this vision for the future? (See larger story of Joel.) 5. In Acts 2:14-21, Peter preaches a sermon at Pentecost while directly quoting Joel. It is argued that the coming of the Holy Spirit is the partial future Joel envisioned. For what purpose did the Holy Spirit come upon the disciples of Jesus after Easter? 6. As you think about the Joel’s vision of the future, does it give you hope? How could/does that hope shape your interactions with others? 7. When you think of the challenges we face today as a larger society, do you think it is important that we live as “people of hope?” What kind of witness would that offer to those around you? What kind of impact might that have? *This week's Year of the Book reading: Isaiah 18-44
