Did you know?
The name “Jesus” means “the Lord saves.” This doesn’t mean that Jesus likes to save his money (like in the bank) but it means he saves people from bad situations that they cannot get themselves out of. Similarly, the name “Immanuel” also given to Jesus, means “God with us?” Did you know Jesus is with us today…this very moment?

In what ways do you think Jesus saves us? Why is it good that God is with us? When do you need to remember that God is with you?
The Magi, or wise men, were men from a land in the east; somewhere like modern day Iraq, Afghanistan, India or even China. It is amazing that men from so far off knew that there was a new king being born for the Jews when the Jews didn’t even know that he was born. We hear they brought gifts for Jesus…you know what gold is and that it is very expensive but did you know that frankincense was incense used for worship and myrrh was a perfume used which also had medicinal purposes.

Why do you think that the Magi brought Jesus gifts? What is something of great value to you? Would you be willing to give it up for someone special (like a king or queen)? What difference do you think these gifts made for Mary and Joseph? What do you have to offer Jesus today?

John was a bit of a wild guy who wore strange clothing (made out of camel’s hair) and ate weird stuff (like locusts and wild honey). Yet many people went to see him so that they could get right with God. Did you know that a dove has been a symbol of peace for a long time and of the provision of God (remember Noah’s ark and the dove). This passage also shows the three persons of the trinity interacting God the Father (voice from heaven), God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit (dove). This story tells of God preparing Jesus for all that he had ahead of him.
When you are led by the Holy Spirit it is not always going to be easy. In this passage, the Spirit leads Jesus into the desert, but it was for his good. It says that Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Fasting means that he didn’t eat food for a period of time…Imagine that! Sometimes we feel like we’ll “starve to death” if we just miss morning tea! Did you know that Jesus fasted to grow closer in his relationship to God and to learn to trust God more.

What do you think? Give your best impression of the voice of God (that was heard from the sky). • What would you have thought if you heard God’s voice? • What does this story say about Jesus? • Why did John say that Jesus should be baptising him? It may not be in a voice from the sky, but ask God today to speak to you and to give you all you need to be prepared for what God wants you to do. •

Describe what it is like when you feel really hungry? I mean REALLY hungry? How do you think Jesus was feeling after not eating for 40 days and 40 nights? Do you think it would have been hard to resist the offer of food from the devil? Would you have taken it? What is something you can do this week to help you grow closer to God and learn to trust God more?
