BJP will not oppose Food Security Bill in Parliament: Rajnath „ AGENCY

NEW DELHI: With the Congress-led UPA government's ambitious Food Security Bill slated to come up for consideration in Parliament tomorrow, BJP on Sunday said it will support the proposed legislation. The Bill, hailed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the "most important" legislation, proposes to give the country's twothird population the right to highly-subsidised food. It will come up for consideration in Lok Sabha tomorrow. "BJP will not oppose the Food Security Bill in Parliament. We will support it," BJP president Rajnath Singh said. He said it was unfortunate that Congress had been unable to remove poverty in the country even after being in power for so many years and lamented that it had failed to provide even basic food to them. "The poor are not poor because of their own misfortune, but because of the misgovernance of the UPA," he said. Singh claimed that over one crore people in Delhi were still living without basic amenities and promised to remove poverty in the next five to seven years. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the UPA's food security measure and its plank of inclusive growth. "Congress has done nothing inclusive, only excluded people. On Sunday, the word Inclusive Growth is popular. Was this word there earlier? Why has it to be used on Sunday? Congress has made condition of poor such they have to talk of food security," he said in Hyderabad. PTI

Udai also expressed his seri-

ous concern over suspension and disturbance to Amarnath, Budha Amarnath and Machail pilgrimages and demanded all these these should be restored immediately and conducted under adequate security. In a Secretariat meeting, he demanded to form a joint committee of Jammu people from all shades to provide strong common leadership to lead/continue peaceful protests against failure of government which failed to protect life and properties of its citizens and maintain law and order. The meeting was attended by Mohan Singh, Inder Pal Singh, Kulveer Charak, Ram Singh, Kamal Khan, Varsha Kapoor and Om Parkash Sharma.

PDP demands disbanding of Village Defence Committees „AGENCY

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday demanded disbanding of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) saying there is no need for them to continue and have arms and ammunition. "The disbanding of VDCs should have been a natural consequence of the situation when it improved. "What is the number of militants in Jammu province? I think it is zeroish. What do you need them (VDCs) (for)? ," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told reporters here. Mufti urged the state as well as the Central government to review the continu-

ance of the VDCs and demanded their arms and ammunition be taken back. "I would urge both the state and the Central government to review this (VDCs) and in case they feel that many of these boys are going to lose their employment, then they can put them somewhere else but take the guns away from them," she said. These members can be adjusted somewhere else and given other opportunities, the PDP leader said. "Some of them have crossed their age-bar. They are into their fifties and sixties. But you can give youngsters other opportunities and employment rather than handing them guns.

Bihar Min regrets remarks giving clean chit to Pak „ AGENCY

PATNA: Apparently rebuked by the JD(U) leadership, Bihar Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh on Sunday said he "regretted" his remarks giving clean chit to Pakistan for the killing of five Indian soldiers on LoC. However, at the same time, he accused the media of twisting his comments out of context. "I regret my remarks giving clean chit to Pakistan for the killing of five Indian soldiers on the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday last," Singh told media at a hurriedly-convened press conference at his official residence. "I am sorry if my remarks have hurt the sentiments of any individual," he said categorically, but again shifted the blame on media for "twisting" his remarks out of context. Singh also candidly admitted that he was illinformed that Indian soldiers were killed by militants to create a wedge

between the two neighbours, but he has now come to know it was the handiwork of the Pakistani Army for which the Indian government should take the sternest possible action against Islamabad. He admitted that he has been issued a show cause notice by the JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav and said he will reply soon. On being told that his remarks have caused huge embarrassment to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on top of an insensitive comments for the armed forces by his ministerial colleague, Singh said: "I have already regretted my remarks.... "If the Chief Minister seeks my resignation, I will be ready to hand over the letter at any time." He, however, defended his remarks describing Pakistan as a younger brother and a neighbour and said it was outcome of his socialist ideology and a vision that India should have good relations with all its neighbours. Homesick on Eid: Kashmiri girls rue being away for studies „ AGENCY

KOTA (RAJ): Seventeenyear-old Haseeb Shafi regrets not being able to go home to Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of Eid. She and her fellow girl students marked the day by offering prayers at Eidgah mosque here. "I observed Roza on as many days as I could during the auspicious month of Ramzan," Shafi said. Over 300 students from Kashmir, mostly girls, are enrolled in coaching centres here where they are preparing for medical and engineering examinations. As the holy day of Eid arrived, several among them said they were homesick and wanted to be with their families in J-K. "I missed my family and was homesick... but, for the sake of studies, I tolerated it," said 18-year-old Rizvana from Kulgam in Kashmir Valley. Rizvana, who is undergoing coaching here for medical entrance tests, said that she got together with some girls from her hometown and prepared 'Siwainya' (sweet noodles) for Eid at their hostel.

Another student, Sania Khan (19), regretted missing out on the special Eid preparation called 'Kahwa' a blend of hot water with saffron and noodles. "Kahwa is tough to prepare, so we could not prepare it here," she said. Sweet memories of Eid celebrations with her family back home continued to fill her thoughts, Sania said. Some of the coaching institutes here had made special arrangements for these students to feel at home on Eid. Naveen Mashawari, director of a renowned coaching school here, said they had arranged an iftar party during Ramzan for their Kashmiri students. But the longing for home was strong among all Kashmiri students at festival time, not least because of the delicious fare they were having to miss. Interestingly, Eid was celebrated all over India on Friday but in Kota region it was celebrated yesterday as the moon on Thursday evening was not visible here due to thick clouds and heavy rainfall. BJP opposed to Manmohan, Sharif talks at UN „AGENCY

NEW DELHI: After the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistan at LoC, BJP on Sunday demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh immediately declare that there will be no talks with his Pakistani counter part at the United Nations. Blaming UPA's "inaction" for Pakistan daring to attack India, BJP said after repeated ceasefire violations along the LoC, Prime Minister Singh should take effective steps in this directions by taking all political parties into confidence. "You should declare on Sunday itself that there will be no talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Also, you should take effective steps by taking all

political parties into confidence. All limits have been crossed now," Singh said here on Sunday, wondering over reports that the Prime Minister still intends holding talks with his Pakistani counterpart. "If timely and effective steps were taken by the Indian government, Pakistan could not have dared to attack Indian posts," the BJP leader said, questioning, "Till when will we continue to hold dialogue and talks with Pakistan?" Addressing a rally at Ramlila grounds here, the BJP chief gave a clarion call to oust the Congress-led government in Delhi and then at the Centre and announced his party would bring electricity rates down by 30 per

cent if voted to power. "I feel India's High Commissioner should be recalled and diplomatic relations with Pakistan scaled down," Singh said, adding he had made this demand at the time of beheading of Indian soldiers by Pakistan. "I had then sought a befitting reply to Pakistan, but Prime Minister Singh has not reacted so far," Singh said. "We have tried to maintain good, friendly relations with Pakistan. But all limits have been crossed now. I wish to appeal to the Prime Minister to declare that there would be no further talks with Pakistan till it stops suchtype actions (of attacking Indian soldiers and supporting terror)," he said. New border defence pact between India, China on anvil „ AGENCY

NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of recent incursions by Chinese troops into India, the two countries are working to conclude a new border defence agreement with an aim of signing it when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh travels to Beijing possibly in October. The Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA) proposes prevention of face-offs between the troops of the two countries along the over 4,000 km disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC). The agreement was pro-

posed by the Chinese side in January and is under negotiation against the backdrop of a spate of incursions by the troops of the People's Liberation Army into the Indian territory. The proposed pact may be signed during the visit of the Prime Minister to Beijing likely to take place in October, Defence Ministry sources told PTI here. Sources said a team comprising officials of the Defence and other Ministries along with military officials is scheduled to visit China next month to

discuss the proposal. China had proposed freezing of infrastructure development along the border under the new pact but it was rejected by India. Sources said the proposed pact would be "comprehensive" encompassing some of the protocols and agreements signed by the two countries in the past. Other proposals made under the pact include nontailing of troops if noticed during patrolling along the disputed Line of Actual Control and to not fire at each other under any condition. (PTI)
