TEST PREP GUIDE – LSC-Tomball

The advisor will look at ACT, SAT, and TAKS scores. If these test scores do not meet the academic requirements to enroll in freshman level English or Math courses, the student will be required to take the TSI Assessment test. Since the TSI Assessment test only measures weather or not the student meets the requirements for enrolling in college level classes, it is not used as a placement test. The Tomball campus administers the ACCUPLACER to determine which English or Math class is appropriate for the student’s abilities. There is a $29 fee for each TSI test and placement test. If the advisor determines that the student only needs to take particular sections of the test, the fee is $10 per section. Students do not need to make an appointment with the Assessment/Testing Center before taking a TSI test or ACCUPLACER exam, but they must arrive at least 4 hours prior to closing (See hours below).

All students, unless considered TSI Exempt, must take the TSI Assessment test prior to enrolling at LSCS. If a student’s TSI scores do not meet the college-readiness standards, the student will be placed in a developmental class. See the list of Course Placement Scores for TSI exemptions and requirements for credit course placement. Pre-Assessment Activity: All students required to take the TSI Asssessment must complete a Pre-Assessment Activity. This is designed to help students do their best on their placement tests. The Pre-Assessment Activity can be done in-person through a test-preparation session or online through myLoneStar. Once completed, students will be able to schedule their TSI Assessment. TSI Test: The TSI test is computer adaptive, which means that questions increase or decrease in difficulty level depending on how the examinee responds. It is not timed, but it is important to complete each section of the test. It tests the following areas: Mathematics and Statistics – a multiple choice assessment of elementary and intermediate algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Writing – a multiple choice assessment covering grammar and essay revision Reading – a multiple choice assessment covering literary analysis Essay – essay written to one of several prompts

ACCUPLACER

The ACCUPLACER test is a computer-adaptive, non-timed placement test taken on a computer. A computer-adaptive test adjusts the presentation of test questions according to the performance of the examinee. If the examinee gets the question right, the computer will make the next question a harder one. Likewise, if the examinee misses the question, the computer will make the next question an easier one. In this way, the computer can quickly determine the examinee’s skill level. Test Sections:
Reading Skills Test - multiple choice section that measures vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Math Skills Test – multiple choice section that measures high school Algebra I skills. Sentence Skills Test- multiple choice section that measures the mechanics of writing as well as sentence structure, organization and spelling skills. The Essay (WritePlacer)– measures your ability to write effectively, which is critical to academic success. Your writing sample will be scored on the basis of how effectively it communicates a whole message to the readers for the stated purpose. Your score is based on your ability to express, organize and support your opinions and ideas, not the position you take on the essay topic.
