The Road to Resilient Forests: Bridging Science, Policy and Management Featuring: James Redeker; CT Commissioner of Transportation

James P. Redeker, named Commissioner of DOT by Governor Dannel P. Malloy on August 25, 2011, is responsible for overseeing the statewide system of highway operations and maintenance, capital project design and construction, public transportation, and ports. DOT’s responsibilities include over 3,700 miles of state highways – 18% of the state’s road system. These are roads that go by forest and field, past town centers and through major cities. DOT’s commitment to a modern transportation system includes management of a significant portion of the state’s roadside forest.

Phillip Rodbell; Urban Forestry Specialist, USDA Forest Service

For more than 30 years, Phil Rodbell has been a key player in the development of urban forestry throughout the United States. He has had a role in urban forestry being identified as a field in its own right and in its becoming a national movement and a major program within the USDA Forest Service. In his position with the Forest Service, Phil has been a close partner with the State of Connecticut in the growth and development of our state’s urban forestry program. This gives Phil a broad perspective regarding trees and urban forests that will inform his remarks in wrapping up the day’s sessions. Break-out Sessions include:

Roadside Forest Management The Economics of Trees Conserving Forests – State Policy Bringing Back Native Trees – Elms and Chestnuts
