Treatment can be carried out whilst sitting or lying in your postural drainage positions.
2.
Take ___ relaxed tummy breaths without the Acapella.
3.
Place the Acapella mouthpiece in your mouth making sure that you have a tight seal around the device with your lips.
4.
Take a slightly bigger breath than normal in through your nose and hold your breath for 2 - 3 seconds.
5.
Blow out through the Acapella while the device vibrates. •
Avoid breathing out too fast or too forcefully.
•
The sound that the Acapella produces should be a constant noise at the same pitch.
•
You should ensure that you keep your cheeks taut when blowing out. If you find this hard you can use your other hand to help. 2
6.
Perform ___ breaths using your Acapella.
7.
Take ___ relaxed tummy breaths without the Acapella.
8.
Perform 1- 2 huffs and a cough to clear any sputum.
This cycle should then be repeated for 20 minutes or about 12 - 15 cycles. The pressure and flow can be altered to make it easier or harder by adjusting the dial on the end of the Acapella. Your physiotherapist will assess which level is best for you when you are given the Acapella. Do not adjust the dial without discussion with the physiotherapist.
Cleaning your Acapella It is recommended that you clean your Acapella after each use. You should take the device apart to clean it. There are 4 parts to be cleaned: the cover, the base, the mouthpiece and the rocker. Wash the Acapella in warm soapy water and then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a paper towel. A leaflet containing the manufacturer’s washing instructions will be given to you. Please ensure that you follow these carefully.
