He finds Virginia’s paint box and decides to make the bloodstain again using the red paints. 3 medicine The ghost has just hurried up the stairs, getting away from the Otis men, who came out when he fell to the floor with the armour. Then he gives his famous horrible laugh, and Mrs Otis comes out of the bedroom to give him some medicine because she thinks he has a pain in his stomach. 4 oil This is the first meeting between the ghost and the Otis family. The ghost is walking past Mr Otis’s bedroom, making a lot of noise with his chains. Mr Otis comes out into the passage with a bottle of Tammany’s Sun Oil, which he tells the ghost to put on his chains. 5 turnip The ghost has just been back to look at the second ghost again, very early in the morning. 1 The sentence is: ‘I have not slept for three hundred years.’ 2 The ghost said it to Virginia. 3 Virginia prayed for the ghost to have peace, and then she and her family took Sir Simon’s skeleton to the Garden of Death. Activity 3

after reading

The picture goes on page 23. 1 The twins’ bedroom. 2 The jug is going to fall off the door, and the water will go all over the ghost. 3 He will feel wet, angry, and unhappy, and the next day he will be ill with a bad cold. Lines taken from the story would make suitable captions, for example: • A heavy jug of water fell right down on him. Or students might like to think of something more imaginative, for example: • A horrible surprise was waiting for the ghost. • The twins waited happily for the ghost to come into the room.

The correct order is: 5, 9, 2, 7, 4, 1, 3, 8, 6 Sir Simon murdered his wife in the library in 1575. Then, in 1584, he suddenly disappeared. His wife’s brothers locked him in a room without food or water, and he died there. After that, his ghost began to appear in Canterville Chase. For 300 years he was the best ghost in the country. When the Otis family arrived, the ghost had a difficult time. Then Virginia met the ghost, and prayed for him to die. The family found Sir Simon’s skeleton, and put it in the ground in the ‘Garden of Death’. After that, Sir Simon’s ghost never appeared again. Activity 5
