External and Internal Conflict Conflict is a struggle between opposing characters or between opposing forces. In an external conflict, a character struggles with some outside force. This outside force might be another character, society as a whole, or a natural force. An internal conflict takes place within the character's own mind. It is a struggle between opposing needs or desires or emotions.
