The good example - Teaching Portfolio

How do I get started on my portfolio?

Practice description

Generally speaking the purpose of a teaching portfolio is to document and visualise your teaching experiences and your ability to reflect on your teaching. It is quite simple to document experiences - but it is a new and challenging task to most people to document their teaching reflections.

The practice description explains how you implement your teaching philosophy, and thus it is a description of your teaching methods. Annika Käck from Stockholm University has developed a series of six questions that can be used to describe a teaching situation. The questions are labelled with a sign:

Below you will find inspiration on how you can get started with two reflection texts: your teaching philosophy and practice description. My teaching philosophy All teachers have a teaching philosophy, however not all of them have formulated it yet. Your teaching philosopgy characterise your values and beliefs in connection to learning and teaching. You can clarify and formulate your teaching philosophy by explaining the principles behind your way of teaching. • What is the purpose of your teaching, academic as well as what goes beyond the merely academic? • Which teaching methods do you prefer to use and how? Additionally it is also important to provide some reasons for why you choose to use these methods. • Finally you should also reflect on how you know whether your teaching has the desired effect, that is, how you evaluate your teaching. Examples of teaching philosophies “My aspirations as a teacher are to generate competency, transfer skills and stimulate critical thinking. In my view lectures should have a first rather pedagogical part followed by a more interactive one.” (Michele Della Morte, Associate Professor at Faculty of Science)

“I see my own rolle as a teacher as perspective creator, initiator of reflections and a committed professional who is an example for others to follow.” (Nina Bonderup Dohn, Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities)

By answering these six questions you are on to a good start in creating a practice description. Examples of practice descriptions Nina Bonderup Dohn Karl Bogh
