THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE ASSIGNMENT Next week you will be watching the movie The Manchurian Candidate. It is in black and white – it was produced in 1962 and was based on the 1959 book of the same name. (It was remade a few years ago and some of the content was changed, hence I didn’t want to use it) The movie ties in quite well with many things we discussed during our Cold War unit. It has wars, fear of communism, spies, the military, brain washing, the use of science to gain an advantage, a US versus communism component, etc. What I want as you watch the movie is for you to take notes on things from the movie that deal with our unit. Write down specific scenes or dialogue that you see as connections to the Cold War unit. You can either use this sheet of paper – both sides to take your notes, or if you want/need straight lines use your own notebook paper. On Friday, February 22nd you will be headed to the East Lab to write up a paper – a page or two – showing how The Manchurian Candidate ties into our studies of the Cold War. How does your knowledge of the Cold War come into play when watching this movie? Does your understanding of the movie increase because of your prior knowledge? Things like that. Use specifics from the movie to illustrate your points. You will hand in your paper at the end of class on Friday – ALONG WITH YOUR NOTES. This assignment will count as a 20-‐point project grade (again projects count as 40% of your grade). Good luck and I will see you on Monday February 25th.
