Ohio’s John Legend Samples Mighty Hannibal’s 1967 R&B Hit…..

In a departure from his usually silky crooning style, Legend composed and submitted a darker, grittier musical offering than his fans were used to hearing from the pop icon in previous releases. John also felt that his soundtrack submission should musically support the retribution Django (Jamie Foxx) felt and expressed in avenging his lovers honor in the film. His down home gritty sound track song “Who Did That To You” with a grimy, funky lead-in from the Mighty Hannibal’s1967 single became the perfect fit for the plot of the film much to the delight of Quentin Tarantino and theatre goers that have already seen “Django Unchained..” Elton John Also Sampled Hannibal’s Song Book John Legend is not the only pop recording artist that has explored and or sampled the Mighty Hannibal’s song book. Elton John in collaboration with Leon Russell and T-Bone Burnett sampled Hannibal’s “Hymn Number Five” in 2012 for Elton’s release of “There’s No Tomorrow.” It was also Elton John who gave The Mighty Hannibal credit for bringing religious and social issues together in his recording of the “Truth Shall Make You Free,” which was the first contemporary gospel single by the Georgia born Hannibal – way before Kirk Franklin. And about Hannibal’s recording of “Aint Nobody Perfect” that was a sound track single in the Tyler Perry movie “Madea’s Big Happy Family, in 2011, Elton said, he was glad to hear a song that promoted understanding and tried to put an end to the finger-pointing.
