ROSA The number one software for PWR core loading pattern optimization Your issue

Technical background

Nuclear power plant operators are under constant pressure to reduce the operating cost of their assets. PWR operators are no exception. Developments such as the fuel tax in some countries demand new solutions for cost reduction in loading the reactor core. Determining the best PWR reload design considering all boundary conditions is a complex task. The ROSA software developed by NRG solves this problem swiftly.

ROSA is a 3D optimizer. The code generates millions of core design options in a day. Any combination of over 60 optimization parameters can be chosen for the core design. For example:

Our offer: ROSA Fuel reload cost savings is without doubt the main functionality of ROSA. Normally, savings in the order of 1% up to millions USD per reload can be expected. However, ROSA is a versatile tool that offers many other benefits. Examples are: Enhanced operating margins, such as for F∆H, DNB or SDM. Scoping study capability for fuel management strategies or new fuels, for which ROSA is especially suited because of its high speed. • Outage time savings due to optimized loading patterns with a minimum number of fuel shuffles; for example a 25 hour refueling record in case of the Borssele NPP. • Emergency core redesign capability; if needed during an outage, reducing the outage duration, for example 36 hours saved in case of in Sequoyah-2 cycle 11. • Engineering time reduction, both in time schedule and workload. •

Fuel cost or total cost (including production loss) Natural cycle length • Enthalpy rise hot-channel factor (F ) ∆H • Minimum DNB-ratio • Maximum assembly power (P-bar) • Heat flux hot-channel factor (F ) q • Maximum boron concentration • Maximum MTC at HZP • Minimum power near detector • Maximum assembly burnup under control rod • Maximum burnup of fuel rod at EOC • Number of poison rods (2 types) and clusters (1 type) in fresh fuel • Burnup or keff of discharged assemblies • •

ROSA is highly user-friendly, due to its powerful graphical user interface including drag and drop capabilities, making it an intuitive code to use. On top of that, ROSA allows the user to interact with the optimization process, for example by changing parameter targets during the run or by moving fuel assemblies manually. ROSA is available as a quarter-core symmetry version or a full core version.

ROSA – The number one software for PWR core loading pattern optimization The quarter-core version requires rotational symmetry in the computational domain. In this version only the SDM parameter is calculated in full core geometry. ROSA interfaces seamlessly with all currently used license codes. Depending on individual users needs, NRG provides translators for translating loading patterns from ROSA to the license code in use by the customer and vice versa. Typically ROSA is installed on a multi-user server. ROSA runs on the following operating systems: Linux distributions (e.g. Red Hat, Suse or Debian) UNIX workstations • Windows with UNIX emulator Cygwin • •

ROSA’s user friendly interface

Currently ROSA is used by over twenty five PWRs worldwide. First customers have been with us since the introduction of ROSA on the market, twenty years ago. Customers include (status 1-4-2015): Vogtle-1 Vogtle-2 Farley-1 Farley-2 Vogtle-3 (AP 1000) Vogtle-4 (AP 1000) Borssele

Availability of ROSA ROSA is made available on a time-limited license basis. Before introducing ROSA, you may want to verify ROSA’s benefits for your purposes and for its performance concerning cost advantages, speed and accuracy. For this, no cure/no pay contract options are offered. Alternatively, you may prefer to have a 3-month trial license, requiring only upfront costs for initial model setup of your current core (including validation with respect to the license code). A ROSA license offers full support and includes the following features:

Assembly axial composition screen
