“By faith Abraham, who had received the promises ...” Hebrews 11:17 welcoming Song

tune #125cw

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that c h a r m me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See, from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small. Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. Lead er : I n th e n a me o f the Fathe r, and of th e Son and o f the Hol y S pirit . P e opl e : Amen.

L e ade r : Abraham had a pretty comfortable life with God. The Promise of the Lord made him feel good. Abraham was confident God loved him. But then, all of a sudden, the rug of Abraham’s life seemed to be pulled out from under him! Everything Abraham thought he knew was turned upside down. Again Abraham realized he did not perfectly understand the living God. How would God’s holy meet with God’s kindness? In this moment of stress, Abraham turned to God in faith. He trusted in the Lord. With that same faith, let us now approach God and ask Him, for Jesus’ sake, to forgive us. P e opl e : Almighty God, merciful Father, I confess that I have sinned against You. I have thought, and said, and done things that are not right. You are righteous. I have failed to be like You. But You are full of mercy. In Your mercy, forgive me, I pray. With Your Word, send Your Holy Spirit. Wash me clean through Jesus Christ, Your Son, my Lord. Amen. A l l Just as I am, without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. M e n : Just as I am, and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

...the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. John 3

P e opl e : Out of the depths I have called to You, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to the sound of my cry for mercy ! If You Lord, kept a record of guilt, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is pardon, so You are feared. ( Psalm 130 ) W o m e n Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears, within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. M e n Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. P e opl e : I wait for the Lord. My soul waits, and in His word I have put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. (Psalm 130) A l l Just as I am, Thy love unknown has broken ev’ry barrier down. Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. P e opl e : O Israel, wait confidently for the Lord, because with the Lord there is mercy. With Him there is abundant redemption. ( Psalm 130 )

Lord’s Supper After Holy Communion we join in singing The Thanksgiving Here God’s sacramental union fully soothed my troubled heart, Hear the promise of the Gospel: “Never shall the Savior part!” Here my rescued soul was kneeling Lost in wonder at His grace. Hear the gracious word was spoken: “Jesus Christ died in your place!” Here the holy bread was broken, to sustain my fainting heart; Here the cup of God’s great mercy has refreshed my troubled heart, Here the gracious word was spoken! Hear Him say to me: “Take heart! "Look! Your sins are all forgiven! “Now in peace and joy depart!"

Come to Calv’ry’s holy mountain, sinners, ruined by the fall; here a pure and healing fountain flows for you, for me, for all, In a full, perpetual tide, opened when our Savior died. Come in sorrow and contrition, wounded, impotent and blind; Here the guilty free remission, here the troubled, peace may find. Health this fountain will restore; they that drink shall thirst no more. They that drink shall live forever; ’ tis a soul-renewing flood. God is faithful; God will never break His covenant of blood, Signed when our Redeemer died, sealed when He was glorified. Isaiah 25:6-9 * 6 The LORD All-Powerful will give a feast for all the people on this mountain. At the feast, there will be the best foods and wines. The meat will be good and tender, the wine pure and clear. 7 But now there is a veil covering all nations and people. This veil is called “death.” 8 But death will be destroyed forever. And the Lord GOD will wipe away every tear from every face. In the past, all of His people were sad, but God will take away that sadness from the earth. All of this will happen because the LORD said it would. 9 At that time people will say, “Here is our God! He is the One we have been waiting for. He has come to save us. We have been waiting for our L ORD . So we will rejoice and be happy when He saves us.” Matthew 22:29-33 ** 29 “You are mistaken,” Jesus replied, “since you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 In fact, in the resurrection people neither marry nor are given in marriage. Instead they are like the angels of God in heaven. 31 And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what was spoken to you by God: 32 ‘I AM the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 When the crowds heard His answer, they were amazed at His teaching. Hebrews 11:8-19 ** 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance, and he left without knowing where he was going.

By faith he lived as a stranger in the Promised Land, as if it did not belong to him, dwelling in tents along with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith Abraham also received the ability to conceive children, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was past the normal age, because he considered Him faithful who made the promise. 12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead, descendants were born as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand along the seashore. 13 One by one, all of these died in faith, without having received the things that were promised, but they saw and welcomed them from a distance. They confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 Indeed, people who say things like that make it clear that they are looking for a land of their own. 15 And if they were remembering the land they had come from, they would have had an opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better land—a heavenly one. For that reason, God is not ashamed to be called their God, because he prepared a city for them. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered Isaac. This man, who received the promises, was ready to offer his only son, 18 about whom it was said, “Through Isaac your offspring will be traced.” 19 He reasoned that God also had the ability to raise him from the dead, and in a figurative sense, Abraham did receive him back from the dead. *Easy to Read Version ERV **Evangelical Heritage Version EHV
