The Mardyke Arena UCC have recently partnered with Country Clean Recycling in a quest to improve the reprocessing of waste within the facility amongst members, patrons and staff. In 2017, the facility recycled 33% of its total waste, and has now set an increased target of 43% in 2018 with the full support of all its users and employees. The Mardyke Arena UCC have invested in new 3-way and 2-way recycling bins which have now been placed in locations throughout the facility. In addition, prominent notices and finger-post signage have been erected throughout the building identifying the locations of the Waste & Recycling Points to help direct the public. The introduction of these Waste & Recycling Points has reduced the number of bins in the Arena by 50. The facility’s bins are now colour coded: Black: General Waste - All nonrecyclable waste; Green: Recyclable Waste - Food tins & drink cans, plastic packaging, mixed paper & card and empty plastic bottles; Brown: Compostable Waste - Food Waste Only (No Plastics). “We would certainly see this initiative as a ‘best in class’ type plan and hopefully will encourage other companies and organisations to follow suit,” says Flor Crowley, Environmental Health & Safety Manager at Country Clean Recycling. “The staff at the Mardyke Arena UCC have really gotten behind it, and are leading the way with their enthusiasm and engagement with the initiative. This is an ideal place to test an initiative like this, given the yearly footfall and diversity of age groups using the facility.” Country Clean Recycling conducted a number of audits in advance of the initiative to ensure
to pinpoint the most effective placement of bins for the greatest ease of recycling. Monthly weights of both waste and recycling bins are being tracked and recorded on an ongoing basis. “Our aim is to become the best in class in demonstrating how to most efficiently recycle our waste and the manner in which we encourage our members and patrons to be aware of the benefits. Certainly the message of needing to become more environmentally aware is well established with the general public and our staff have very much gotten behind the initiative. Keeping track on a monthly basis of exactly what percentage of our waste is being recycled will focus all of us, both staff and the public, of how the initiative is progressing and help to make everybody a part of the process.” says Marketing & Quality Manager, Wayne Falvey. The Arena is the first and only facility of its kind in Ireland to be accredited with major international business standards ISO 9001 for Quality Management; OHSAS 18001 for Occupational Health & Safety Systems; ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard. This project is part of the Arena’s commitment to protect the environment and maintaining compliance with ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems Standards. “Members, patrons, and third parties are encouraged to support, whenever possible, environmentally friendly practices within the Mardyke Arena UCC.”

Summer Intensive Swimming Courses Bookings Open Tuesday 8th May Booking for our summer intensive swimming courses will be opening on Tuesday 8th May. The Mardyke Arena UCC will host 4 weeks of Intensive Swim Lessons for Children during the summer. Intensive courses are a wonderful way of fasttracking a child’s development and provide a healthy structured activity for them during the summer holidays. Give your child the opportunity to interact with other children and learn to swim and have fun at the same time. Swimming helps children improve their motor skills, confidence levels and most importantly, it could save their lives.
